Medium plus intensity acidity, crunchy blackcurrant, tight persistent tannins plenty of oaky notes on the palate, cream, slight cassis, well made, polished, nice but quite woody. Time.

Valenciso Masterclass with Diego Santana (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Savoury, sweet spice, a little toasted oak, fruit plays second fiddle to this but proves to be, with agitation, red hued, with plenty of minerality and a touch of an almost saline note. Fresh and fleshy, chalky minerality, that saline quality, oak and fruit on the palate are both present and it finishes a little bitter. Hmm.

Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London): Ripe, baked black over red fruit has a little jubey underpin, a little cream, sweet spice, plenty of very good oak…In fact this has ridiculous levels of oak…bit of a roided nose. Medium plus intensity acidity (adjusted?) Porty, ugly, fairly awful stuff, like sucking a lump of wood that has been waved in the general direction of some black hued fruit. Years may help to tame the oak but will the fruit persist?

11/22/2022 6:50:00 PM - I was quite surprised as well - the other wines that I tried in the bracket (with the exception of the 2018) were more balanced; not sure what happened in the winery that year as this was very much an outlier.

Of the other 2016 Libournais wines I've had only a couple were worth another look - the Canon and the VCC.

I suspect 2018 will be far worse/jammier/riper based on extremely limited tasting

Short answer - that is exceedingly kind of you and very generous.

    cheers, chatters

Long answer (feel free to ignore) - My notes are pretty much for me which is why they hardly ever reference the colour of the wine and quite often use commonality of language and phrasing. I have always eschewed points as they seem, if you'll forgive the obvious pun, pointless. For your future reference (though you've probably worked most of this out) my rather loose (as in I don't always use it) ranking system starts at Ugh/Nah (no thank you) and moves from there to Meh (why bother) to Hmm (as above) and then to wines that offer a more positive experience or me - Okay/Nice/Lovely/Wonderful etc. Meh and <shrugs> are fairly interchangeable and "Not for me" means that it is an obviously good quality wine but that it is, well, not for me.

Drank over three days. First hour of first day oak, black fruit and tar on the nose, similar on the palate with integrated tannin. Gets better after an hour with diminishing oak and more fruit and tar. Second and third day has much less oak but wet soil and forest floor - tannin and acidity low. In a good spot now but likely on the way down.
