A serious zin from one of the best zin vineyards in California. Drinking great but has a long life ahead of it. Just wish I had more than the one bottle I have left. A beautiful wine.

A terrific Zin that is tasting so great it must be in its prime. Loved it

Years ago I just happened to be at the winery when Mike found out that he was going to be able to continue to receive the Montafi fruit. He thought he was going to lose access to the fruit. Mike was very happy. I do think Montafi is one of his best Zins along with Papera. I’ve been buying Carlisle’s since the winery started.

I do remember one corked bottle many years ago. When I emailed Mike to tell him about the corked bottle he immediately sent me a check

2012 Saxum James Berry Vineyard

Paso Robles Red Rhone Blend more

1/7/2021 - Sanlucar wrote: 90 points

I agree with many fellow Cellar Tracker notes of disappointment on this wine. It's a dried out shell of what it used to be -- there's barely any fruit remaining and with 15.8% alcohol makes for a mouth searing experience. Saxum wines are clearly over-rated and are not what they used to be; they've always been massive fruit bombs, but they used to retain some sense of terrior and uniqueness, but sadly, not any more. If you have any in your cellar I strongly suggest drinking now or selling on the grey market where they'll sell because of a cult-ish following.

I rated it a 95 and the other Cellar Trackers have been rating it even higher. I'll try a '12 JB if I have one in my cellar and let you know how it showed.

This is a terrific cab that is just starting to enter it's prime drinking window. Consumed after a short decant. Could have used an additional hour decant. So happy I a couple more bottles in my cellar.

3/19/2020 12:17:00 PM - I've been trying a few different 2014 cabs and been happy with them. I really like the Myriad cabs a lot but question whether the extra cost of the single vineyard cabs are worth it as compared with the Napa cabs.

This wine is really signing. I would suggest an at least an hour in the decanter. A tremendous value at the bargain price I paid for it at $8.00. Wish I could buy some more.

Drank this with Jay H and Erez at Delmonico's Kitchen in NYC. Based the the recommendations below, I sure was happy to drink this wine. On p'n p (pop and pour), this was immediately worthwhile. A dark wine. Smooth. Great nose. Elegant. Wish I had more. No rush to drink, but you'll enjoy this if you decide to open it.

A Paso Robles gem... Big, dark fruit with notable black olive and vegetable background notes. Present tannin and spicy finish which gives this wine tremendous structure and is likely age worthy.

Seems like we have similar tastes in California wines but quite a different cellar. I started buying cult Cali cabs when they were $40 a bottle but stopped when they reached insane levels.

Nose of spring flowers, blackberry, cranberry, and earth, same on the palate, big body, very tasty, needs 2 years to peak, enjoyed during Monday Night Football and passing candy out on Halloween Night, long finish.

12/10/2016 3:04:00 AM - After seeing your notes on the '14 Carlisle Montafi and seeing that the Spectator picking it as 14th best wine of 2016 I guess it's time to try a bottle I have in my cellar. I happened to be at Carlisle tasting with Mike Officer years ago when he was notified he was going to be able to continue to get the Montafi fruit (he had been fearful he was going to lose the ability to obtain the fruit). The only problem was the owner of the vineyard required that the name of wine had to change from Gum Tree (I think that was the old name) to Montafi. Mike was not happy with the required name change.

I waited all these years to drink this? For what. The wine has survived for 19 years OK but it is not drinking well that's for sure. Hope the next bottle is better.

  • Comment posted by Screameagle:

2/21/2016 11:28:00 AM - After reading the other positive notes on the '96 Togni my bottle must not have been a pristine bottle even though it was stored perfectly since release. I had a problem with the 1994 Togni cab which was badly corked. I Philipe and he said he never seen a corked '94 cab. He called back a couple of months later and said he had found other corked '94 Togni cabs. I haven't had much luck with Togni cabs.

This is a case of holding a wine and hitting it at peak. Served with roast chicken. Popped and poured. Nose of pie cherry, cranberry, black tea, mushroom, pinot funk, with hints of Asian spice. On the palate, rich red cherry, cranberry, orange tea, raspberry, earth, spice. Great balance on the palate with a sappy transition to a focused finish. Drink or continue to hold. Should stay at this level for quite a good while.

Falltacular 2013 (FMIII in the OC): I was standing against a wall tasting this wine and Eric walked by and began chatting. He didn't know what I was drinking so I innocently (or not so) said "what to you think of this wine's aromas?" and handed him my glass. He stuck his nose in there, thought for 10 seconds, and said "this is Abigail". Bingo! I told him I thought that was pretty impressive and said "no not really, I live with that wine everyday of its life". Good point, never really thought about that fact he's surrounded by his wines everyday. He's a very knowledgeable winemaker and interesting to converse with.

This is my favorite of his wines, really well made with all the facets of California Pinot I like.

4/22/2014 12:07:00 PM - I agree the 2 acre and 3 birds are the only Carlisles that I don't buy. Up until a couple of years ago Mike used to ship to me in NJ now I have to have the Carlisles shipped to my daughter in NY. It's a pain but worth it however. Carlisle is my largest holding in my cellar 244 bottles. I manage them very closely and none of them are near over the hill. I have only one bottle of the original 1998 release a petite sirah that I am saving.
Are you into the Bedrocks too? I like them too but they are not as good as the Carlisles yet but they will be as Morgan is a talented winemaker with a father Joel Peterson who knows alot about wine and has all the vineyard connections.
