Not a rebuy even at this price. Nothing wrong with the wine but no energy. Dark fruit with an interesting dark molasses streak through the middle. Very soft, tannins completely resolved which is a bit surprising at this young age. PnP.

Nose fairly restrained. Earth and light berry. Beautiful wine, similar to other Ladd offerings - but better. Feminine and restrained (in a good way). Shows lots of tea, light raspberry, moving to earth and mushroom. Love the complexity with secondary floral flavors of roses and violets. Balanced tannins and acidity.

Did not particularly care for this. Too big (15.7 listed on the bottle IIR) and got a significant amount of alcohol taste on the transition from mid to finish. Did like the strong (12%) petite influence though.

Well, big it was, and easy to drink if you like this past decade style. It's listed at 16% + and has the aromatic heat signature of something in that range, too. If you can put the aromatic aside, then the wine drinks fine with black raspberry and some light acidity, too. Needs to go with something like a rich soup (we had it paired with a bean soup that was hearty so the wine stood up well to it) or a meat dish with bbq sauce, something similar. All in, this is a form of syrah I used to like but not anymore, as I just don't like syrah at these ABV levels.

February '15 Bookclub--Hosted by SPK (wines tasted blind) (Red Table--Huntington Beach, CA): Tasted blind, was the last wine of 5 that we did for the meal. Oy vay, this is a big wine. On first impression, to make a guess at the table, I though petite sirah as it had a strong aromatic of really ripe fruit, as well as a dark impression in the glass. A few guys at the table also guessed petite. But, for some reason I fell back towards Cab and then when thinking about my initial guess of petite, landed with Switchback Ridge. There is for me a lot of alcohol here, and it's embedded into the aromatic for sure, coming off a bit soapy. It's that combo of oak and high ripeness that for me is too much. Coffee, milk chocolate, iron and lots of fruit. For context, I do buy and enjoy the SR Petites and even this year, I took a handful of 375s of Merlot for the first time. The latter was tight recently, as I opened one and found the wine to have great grip and long-term potential but it wasn't to me styled like this Cab. In the end, I didn't care for this Cab but for those who know me, I don't buy nor drink Napa Cab but there will be an audience for this wine. I would suggest this wine be paired with the right food, and for context, we had it with bacon wrapped dates that had a little citrus liquid on them and the pairing went very well.

Opened about an hour ago. I've made WOTY remarks about this wine a few times this year so I wanted to see if this was going to be my selection. Pairing it tonight with a butternut squash lasagna, the wine is the temp I prefer for pinot (low 60s) and poured to a burg stem to treat it right. Pours moderately dark, with plenty of dark raspberry, light pepper and a touch of stem yet not showing any imbalance from the full cluster treatment it saw. Juicy, mineral and spice. Where this excels is that it gets flavor into the wine, color without getting all blown up with wood and alc inputs. Finishes with good structure, the same framing juicy fruit and a tang that is refreshing. Will revisit tomorrow to see how air impacts the wine and close the note, see where I land.....Day 2, with a light chill. Floral aromatic. The texture and weight of the wine is noticeable tonight, although it's not gloppy as it has an underpinning of loam and a meaty note that frames up the fruit, along with some stem inflection that helps add an edge. I really just dig this wine for the stuffing, complexity and juicy feel. Finishes with deep, blue and red fruit tones and zingy acidity. This is going to be a fun wine to track and watch evolve and still remains the best red wine from CA I have had all year, my red WOTY.

Agree with note belows about needing time to open and about getting punched in the face with this wine. The nose is huge with an attractive perfume quality. On the palate, this wine hits you with an avalanche of wild dark brooding fruit and herbal flavors. It seems a bit unfocused at this point, but settled down as it got more air (second day open was best). Was a home run pairing with the roasted vegetable and ground beef dish that my wife whipped up. I love what Larry is doing with this grape.

In my continuing late-life education, I have found that I like Pinot. Not just any Pinot mind you but well made and refined Pinot. Ed's wines are a new and exciting discovery for me. I am glad to have stumbled upon his wine through a trade. What an amazing way to learn and explore, by trading Napa Cabs for Cali-Pinots! Better late than never.
The color on these are always intriguing, they always display some sort of burnt umber and a see-thoroughness that is mesmerizing. This has that. The nose shows a cool-toned cola and tart-red strawberry that I also discovered I like...alot. Palate is refined with some dark red fruits, worn leather, earth and sassafras. The strawberry remains in play, although this is not a fruit-controlled wine. I do love the tartness or mild sour-cherry component on this tonight. Balance is really spot on with tannins well in the background, but present and acidity lilty and pillow-like. Overall impression is quite great. Finish long and package complete. I see a nice life ahead for this one and one I am investing in going forward. I have just tried all of Ed's recent offerings and am leaning to the Boer and Bien Nacido vineyard selections so far. What a treat.

This tastes so much like Meomi, that it just may be. It comes from the same source, and could be Total Wines's private rendition. Never the less, it definitely has what I call a "red pop" approach to the Pinot Noir flavor profile. More than any wine I have ever tasted, this wine has a jammy, sweetish attack of fresh red raspberry, strawberry, cherry and cranberry fruit. The approach is very soft and extraordinarily fruit driven. I don't exactly love this style, but many will, so give then credit for creating something unique. They have balanced things out with just enough acidity and oak. Seems very ripe without much tannin. The finish is "red pop" fruity. You could probably serve this slightly chilled, and easily drink it alone without food.

I like the cool 2011 vintage in CA, at least when it comes to Syrah and Pinot. This has been open for a day, under cork in the refrigerator. The wine still is a little cooler than it should be but there is good acid buffering slightly tart dark fruit, some olive, very light white pepper and maybe a touch of soy. Medium tannin. 14.1% alc. I wish I bought more than one as this pretty good today.

After being open and sitting in glass for over 1 hour

Nose: raspberry creme, hints of cedar and earth with just a touch of sweet spices. Smells great

Palate: initially a little bit lean but mid palate has some fullness to the flavors. Tastes of earthy, bramble cherries like they used some whole clusters in this wine. Like the balanced spices and just a touch of cedar and roses on the finish. Tannins are fine, medium balanced along with medium acidity. More on the lean side with no overripe fruits or flappy tastes.

Would go really well with some rich cheese.
