11/15/2017 - Christoffer78 Likes this wine: 98 pointsA marvelous wine and a true grand experience. The 2005 James Berry Syrah blend delivers a lovely nose full of dark mature fruit, morellos, violets, the classical Asian spice box and last by not least rich dark chocolate. Adding to this is a close to profound minerality with crushed wet granite as the number one hallmark. After some time in the glass complexity increases and a secondary layer of subtle saddle leather and sunny summer meadow emerges. This is a nose to die for. The palate continues along this first class trajectory with balance and integration as keywords. Perhaps the acidity is a bit understated tonight but the overall texture and structure tell me this wine will last for yet a number of years if cellared properly. With a length on the finish lasting a minute or more, there is very little else to wish for in this lovely effort. A true joy and certainly a true gem! (score is 98+)

Fully mature harmonious nose displaying subtle red fruit, red currant, red cherry, cedar, a hint of caramel, lead pencil, leather and earth. Fully integrated palate, still remnants of tannins that remind us the vintage, harmonious and a seamless subtle finish. It would be a wonderful wine to enjoy in a cold winter night in front of a fireplace.

This is the 4th bottle that I have tasted (the first was superb, the other 2 less so...), so there was a certain apprehension when opening... But as soon as we plunged our noses into the glass, we were reassured : freshness, radiance, fruitiness, clarity, we were in for a treat!
It's a fresh St Emilion, between undergrowth, oak moss, a spicy fruitiness (a little jammy strawberry), spices, which reminded me of CF (while currently it is 5% of the blend, but at the time?...), the range is incredibly dynamic for a wine of this age, the Ch. Margaux 62 drunk alongside it had better watch out! No eccentric woodiness, no trace of oxidation, in short, a very beautiful (old) wine that it would have been risky to date blindly.
Obviously a very good vintage for this Clos des Menuts, and which seems timeless.
