2001 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial

Very slight fading at the rim, still looking quite youthful. It's quite a chunky Rioja, the tannins are almost resolved but it seems a little clumsy, especially for a 2001 and lacks the balance of some of its peers, the fruit almost seems a little cooked and a bit pruney and the finish a little hollow, all this said, it's not unpleasant, just not a great wine.

4/27/2015 3:02:00 AM - hi, thanks for taking the time to comment, I may have been a little harsh with the score on this wine comparing it to my next note and also reading the WOFW reviews, which are crazily harsh. it was just a bit clunky and without the lightness of touch that i have come to expect from GR Rioja, 1 more bottle left, hopefully it will come round

Decanted 1 1/2 hours. Nose still a little shy at first but then opens a little to show balsamic notes(eucalyptus?) , with maybe a little meatiness, tobacco and cedar, fruit is present, mixing between bright red cherries and dark plums. Slightly sweet entrance, fine tannins coating all the mouth, more cherries on the palate, vanilla, coffee and dark chocolate supporting the fruit, powerful but with grace. More to come from this wine, really looking forward to the evolution over the next few years.

Whilst I can admire the winemaking on display here I just struggle to get past that drying oak/tomato tang that seems to stick out. "No, its not you, its me" is the usual line that gets played out when dumping someone, but with me I really do think my palate has picked up an aversion to all forms of Rioja (both good and bad). And this one is good, its just that I dont like it.

11/5/2014 2:49:00 PM - I've read polarising reviews of this wine, I won't be opening my bottles for a few years yet and assume/hope that the producer and vintage will deliver, even though it's 2001 it's a very recent release still

An intellectual experience more than a hedonistic one, this nevertheless has managed to keep hold of the guts and terroir you would expect of a Grand Cru. Beefy, soupy with meat, fennel, spices and black cherries. Holding on reasonably well, although the finish lacks the depth of a truly great Grand Cru.

This wine was top CDP 2011 in decanter jan 14 with 18.5/95 score. It changes continuously over an evening in a decanter, there's lots of savoury interest on the nose, tapenade, thyme, there's dark plum fruit with occasional hints if chocolate and liquorice in the background. The texture us smooth and mouthfilling and a great savoury finish with a little fine tannin giving it grip. It's still a bit tight to start, but it's drinking ok now, try again in a couple of years

2/16/2014 1:04:00 PM - It definitely benefitted from being decanted and evolved over the evening beautifully, I can't say that I thought it was a 95pt wine, but it was very good for the price

From the wine society. Still quite a vibrant colour though the cork was very soft and entirely soaked through. The nose was filled with tea, caramelised sugar, some ripe plums, raw tobacco and more. Quite evocative stuff. The palate has a very soft touch of tannin on the tongue but no rough edges, there's still some ripe plum fruit, with a real sweetness to it and mixes with leather, spice and more tabacco and lingers around your mouth for a good while. Lovely stuff.

12/30/2013 12:55:00 PM - Thanks for the comment, we've had 3 1/2 bottles so far from the wine society lot and have seen some bottle variation, 1 stunning, 1 quite good and 1 almost dead, the half was a risky buy anyway, a 64, but was doa, still well worth trying at the prices they were going for.

Decanted through an aerator based on previous tasters experiences. It's deep and dense looking with huge legs.
This has a great nose of ripe earthy Syrah fruit with an almost menthol freshness. In the mouth there's some very fine tannins but completely out weighed by concentrated fruits and warm spice, it's all deep and dark, with great length. This is surprisingly approachable now. But has the legs (literally...) body and acidity to last for many years yet. Really quite impressive and easily comparable to a top Rhone Syrah

Decanting for an hour really helped the wine open up. It's got bright sappy red fruit, a little savoury on the finish, fine tannin. Like pjaines I can tell there's some quality here, I think it needs a bit of time, try again in a year.
