2012 Arietta Merlot Hudson Vineyards

Napa Valley more

3/27/2015 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 94 points

The nose was stunning, as it seemed to reach from the glass with dark wild berry fruit, sweet herbs and tobacco. On the palate, it displayed refined and silky textures with just enough acidity to provide grip with blue and black fruits giving way to a hint of spice. The finish maintained a hauntingly alluring, dark-spiced fruit note. This is a beautiful Merlot, which masterfully walks the line between ripeness and austerity.

The nose was floral and quite feminine with notes of bright ripe cherry, roses and sweet spice, followed by a dark mineral undertone. On the palate, it displayed medium-bodied textures with a push-pull of sweet and bitter cherry fruits and inner floral tones which lasted into the finish, joined by lingering notes of cedar, minerals and fine tannin. This is currently a very pretty and aromatically expressive young Barolo.

3/6/2015 5:54:00 AM - I was expecting an impenetrable young nebbiolo. What I found was very enjoyable but much more open than expected. If this gains weight through the decades then it would likely score higher. As many have said, it's a hard wine to gauge in its youth and so I scored it entirely on its merits today.

The 2005 Chave Hermitage seemed to literally blossom in the glass with a bouquet which spoke to everything I love about the northern Rhone. Initially it was very much rooted in the earth with dark soil tones, brown stems and herbs, yet turning deeper and richer with air, as notes of crushed red berry, exotic spice, violet florals, minerals and hints of animal musk lifted from the glass. On the palate, this gave the impression of a never-ending veil of silk being gently pulled across the senses—seamless came to mind. Its dark red fruit gave way to cascading layers of savory herbs and red floral tones as it came to a finish with dusting of mineral-tinged earth.

2/23/2015 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 95 points

The nose was so soft yet intense with depths of ripe dark red fruit, however the profile is more about exotic floral tones and spiced-citrus with hints of undergrowth adding brooding depth. The textures on the palate seemed to sweep over the senses like the finest silk, carrying with them refined, focused red fruits, inner floral and earth tones. Intense and vibrant throughout and with a long finish off crushed flowers, tart berry, citrus-rind and earth.

2/27/2015 11:14:00 AM - In the case of the Domaine De La Cote, I find them to have a much more exotic profile compared to Rhys. In my experience, Rhys tends to show more density with darker fruits and herbal woodland tones. The La Cote wines have more spice, high-toned fruit and in often cases a dried citrus note. I love both styles.

The nose was gorgeous, with notes of wild berry, red florals, herbal mint and dried cinnamon. On the palate, it flowed silky-smooth yet with notable heft toward the close; showing red fruit, blueberry skins and minerals. Brisk acidity kept it driven and lent a cooling, clean freshness. The finish was staying, even though it was youthfully clenched, with notes of blueberry and inner floral tones. This is just starting to enter its drinking window, yet there's no rush.

Three of those four Burgs I had (including this one) showed a lot of upside potential.

Meanwhile, a couple weeks ago I had the Arlaud Clos de la Roche, which was so lush and enjoyable that I couldn't put it down.

The nose was glorious in its evolution and truly showed the remarkable staying power of great Barolo. The nose was dark with rich, mature fruit, yet intense as dried berry gave way to crushed fall leaves, dark soil and mineral tones. On the palate, sweet dark berry tones were carried effortlessly by vibrant, acid-driven textures, yet what truly impressed me was the rich, meatiness to its dark fruit. The finish was remarkably fresh with lingering soil and mineral tones.

Benvenuto Brunello 2015 (2010 Brunello di Montalcino) (Gotham Hall, NYC): Rich, dark and sensual on the nose with wild berry and plum, lifting herbal notes, sweet florals and mineral tones, which seemed to turn savory with more time in the glass. On the palate, this turned darker and brooding with an autumnal feel to its berry and spice notes, yet there seems to be so much in store for the future. The finish lingered long, as tart red fruit was joined by earth and soil tones in a truly classic expression of Brunello.

The nose was, at first, restrained, yet opened with time in the glass to show deep layers of tart cherry, wild herbs, dried twigs, graphite, orange zest a hint of animal musk and black pepper. On the palate, velvety textures set the stage for a mélange of rich dark-red fruit, plum, dark chocolate, and herbs. Long and tense on the finish with tart berry saturating the senses, offset by gorgeous inner floral notes.

This was so beautiful, with a perfect integration of herbs and dried twigs from the whole cluster fermentation. Be warned however, at this young age, it can take an hour or two in decanter before showing its true potential.

A gorgeous, dark and ripe nose of black currant, cherry pipe smoke, clove and cinnamon, gaining herbal tones, ginger and dark soil notes over time. The palate showed remarkable intensity with rich, concentrated black fruit, licorice, and savory herbs, in a balanced package with velvety textures. The finish seemed to linger for well over a minute with ripe tannins fading to reveal tart cherry and herbs.

The nose alone was worth the price of entry and continue to wow everyone at the table throughout the entire evening.

Stoney, high-toned, and leading with tart, bright-red fruit, florals and an underlying sourness. Firm but lifted on the palate, energetic, transparent, finishing with clean soil tones and a peppery-sage/bitter Bayer aspirin note. Fine grained tannins need time to resolve, but very approachable after several hours in the decanter and improving through the last glass.

The nose was exuberant with medicinal cherry, crushed raspberry, dark chocolate, floral undergrowth and a hint of volatile acidity. However, I find that a truly balanced Amarone (like this one) pair great with rich meat dishes, especially braises and stews (beef bourguignon). One of my other favorites is a well seasoned Beef Wellington.

Opened with slow-ox for 90 minutes. Not a wine for me. Super Tuscan to the core. Massive fruit and alcohol on the palate with a harsh finish that seems to be prevalent in wines like this (Super Tuscan/California). It seemed ultra-modern in style and It lacked the elegance, grace and finesse of wines from Piedmont. Perhaps it is still too young. Perhaps it is just me. Will see what day 2 brings.

I do see where you're coming from and if it's one thing that I have come to understand about myself, it's that I'm able to enjoy the most classic wines, right next too the more modern styled. As for the Eneo, I believe this wine will mature into something grand--it has all the necessary components to do so. It sounds like it's just not your thing.

The nose showed dark, intense red and black fruits with licorice, charred meat, black pepper and a hint of herbal mint. On the palate, it was velvety with grainy, layered concentration, followed by palate staining fruit; blackberry and raspberry were prominent, along with plum sauce, sweet/savory spice and violet candies. The finish showed hints of dusty tannin with a lasting notion of black fruit and violet, which seemed to go on forever. This wine may still show some youthful structure, but it's so good now, that it's hard to keep my hands off.

With its dusty red fruit profile, piercing acidity, and granular tannin, this is pretty much textbook Chianti, but reminds me why I don't buy Montevertine as often as I'd like, because it's textbook Chianti at twice the price of everyone else's textbook Chianti.

I did smell citrus, flowers. Did not linger much on the palate. Expected more body, something sweeter? This is a good lesson: must try other barolos to get to know them better.
