Opened at home with Sean and Heather. It was a wonderful with crisp green apple. crisp with wonderful creamy texture with tart lemon.

Pale lemon. Light and fine mousse. Green apple, pear, lemon zest, white flowe, brioche. Off dry, high acidity that nicely balances the fruit and generous dosage, long finish. Easy drinking - not the most complex but fine and elegant.

Sadly unable to tell base vintage, but website says it is an equal blend of the classic champagne grape varieties, aged at least 3 years on lees, and then at least 3 months in bottle before release - up to 4 years in total. So this was probably a 2019 base wine.

Pol Roger Wine Society 150th Anniversary Tasting (Churchill War Rooms): Poured from mag. Somewhat mature nose - oak in there? Later learned that there was no oak anywhere in the wines of this house...d'oh! More than decent NV champagne. A second glass was surprisingly different - much more sherbety, much fresher, less complex. Different magnums but both 18 base year I was informed.

91/92. A lovely NV Champagne with refreshing minerally honeyed bready, briochey autolytic stonefruits depth and lovely perlage and good length. 12.5%. Drink now or lay down 5-10 years with canapes or as an aperitif.
Improves and broadens in the glass.

Pale lemon gold. Fine brioche nutty nose, zip, white flowers, dash of yeats and brightness. Delicious refined bursts of flavours, zest, brioche and honey hints supporting the whole with a delicate mousse. Pops in your mouth. Delicious.
Comparing to the Nyetimber Cassis Cuvee the previous night, I think I preferred that. Had a more complete structure and acidity.

A private lunch: Probably my favourite Grande Marque NV, well-aged on the lees (a minimum of 36 months) and with judicious dosage. Complex and vibrant, flavoursome (apple, lemon, biscuit) and elegant, and utterly reliable. A great way to usher in the new year.

An old bottle from an excellent German cellar. The label mentions "Purveyors of Champagne to the late King George VI" and therefore believed to be from the 1950's. Very good level. No visible mousse left. Pale golden colour, lively and perfectly correct for age. Fresh and clean nose, candied fruit and fresh citrus, hints of white mushroom, quite remarkable for age; the palate is dry but juicy, with perfectly integrated lively acidity, gentle bitters and just a little prickle on the tongue; complete finish with candied lemon zest and fresh lemon juice, good length. In extraordinary condition, holds up well over two hours.

Good bubbles with some layers. Starting out with citrus freshness that fades into deeper, fuller notes of almonds. The finish is long with a lasting minerality.
Small bubbles makes for a creamy mousse.

Good taste on palette, but nothing extra. OK in value for money at a price of 50 euro.
I noticed, bread, citrus, fruits in taste.

Aromas of toast, shortbread, crushed rock and ginger. Flavors of shortbread, bread dough, mineral and pastry icing. Ends with a mineral driven finish of 20-25 seconds.

Better when warmed up a bit. Just a touch of yeast on this one. I’d opine that its approachability is what makes Pol Roger so successful. Once again our Christmas tradition, and a worthy one it is. I’m not sure what the Reserve moniker adds, but our go to for a big house champagne. Not classic, but classy.

An even blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier from 30 different curs with 25% reserve wine. Cellared for four years before release. No disgorgement date since Pol Roger only display this information on cases and this was purchased as a single bottle.

Deep gold in the glass. I was informed by my mother that she’d this bottle had in her possession for sometime and the colour supports this. Oxidative in style with blanched almonds, lightly pickled ginger, and brass cookware. Intense burst of peach and nectarine. Persistent length. Clearly showing a decade or more of age and all the better for it.
