2012 Carlisle Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard

Mike Officer's great RRV mixed black vineyard, vines planted in 1927. Dark ruby red. expressive red fruit aromas. On the palate raspberry, cherry and bramble. Excellent depth and length. Wonderful Zin complexity. A classic Carlisle Carlisle!

Drank this alongside an '07 Chapoutier SJ Granits and it was an interesting comparison. The Carlisle (which I popped first) didn't come across as particular sweet or at all meretricious, until by comparison. Then I started to appreciate that its nose of blueberries, sarsaparilla, and dark berries was rather more forward than the Chapoutier. The palate the wine showed nice balance, moderate acidity and a touch of hoisin, but also a greater sense of sweetness. This is wine holding up and showing quite well (I am surprised to see 2013 as CT users' long stop date for this wine; it's in a great place now but I don't see it declining for another 3-4 years), and is a serious wine that both stands alone and plays nicely with food. The fact that it was different to Chapoutier's Granits should not suggest that it was inferior, only different.

Lots of primary fruit, fairly ripe, but balanced by abundant acidity. Love the field blend character of this wine. There are so many flavors going on throughout the palate. My first taste of a Two Acres bottling and I'm not disappointed, though I think this will really improve with a few years on it at least.

Very herby. Some berry and bramble peeking through. Better on the 2nd day. Sort of a weird zin and not overly impressive.

The fruit was great and in the mouth this was delicious. This bottle seemed to have a high acid level and was almost tangy on the finish which was different from our first expereince with the wine. Not sure what changed.

very light on the aromatics. Tried a few different glasses. The subtle aromas were nice, I just wish the volume was turned up. On the second night the nose woke up a bit with fruit and spice. Tasting note is, "delicious". Full throttle without being overbearing. Black cherries and citrus works well with the oak. Great stuff.

Upon opening the aromas are burnt rubber/reduced. Also candied dark fruits. The palate hits full throttle and is massive. Some delicate raspberry fruit. Mouth coating and sweet. No tannins. 15.8% but I didn't notice any heat. Did not intentionally keep this one so long but it happened. Better in its youth but we enjoyed it for what it is now.

Wow. What a surprise. Perfect typicity, gamy, meaty. Fruit dominated. Balanced and delicious but not a quaffable mindless drink. Qpr of the year slightly behind the Carlisle Sonoma zin.

Still drinking well. Red fruit, rich. Well balanced. Acid counters out the alcohol. Lingering finish. At a nice point, but will keep for another year or two at least.

Clear, deep ruby in color, exhibiting intense aromas of wildflower, red and blackberry compote, vanilla, black pepper, anise, and cedar. Dry, full bodied and highly expressive, rich savory fruit is juxtaposed by latent omnipresent power in a dazzling display of dexterity. Voluminous with silky fine-grained tannins; a long sensuous mouth-coating finish awaits. Decanted and consumed over a period of four (4) hours and just kept getting better and better. Delicious and drinking quite well right now and should have no problem doing so for at least a decade.

This drank better than the last bottle I had in January. I didn't get the heat signature of that bottle and it was certainly a preferred bottle last night on the table, as it was the first to get drained of the 4-5 we had out.

P&P'ed. Dark brooding monster of a syrah. You really should wait a couple of years. This may be my favorite Papa's block over the years. Maybe more of Rhone style with massive Cali fruit. This is a serious special bottle of wine worthy of a special occasion.... or a Wednesday night at home with flat iron steak.

Year in and year out this remains very consistent. A bit more complexity this year than last, sweet passion fruit, citrus and a creamy component. Excellent balance and good acid backbone. Drinks well right now as a PnP and will get better with an hour or 2 of air.

Popped and poured. Great nose of black pepper and a bit of coffee. Palate is mixed red and purple fruit with repeating peper notes. Quite energetic and well defined, and spans out across the palate into the finish. Doesn't have the concentration of the single vineyard bottlings, but so delicious.

Menthol and earth on the nose. On the palate, raspberry, blackberry, tobacco, and black pepper, with earthy notes on the medium finish and good acidity. This is a classic Zinfandel as it is now, but I think it may improve with a few more years on it. I'm not sorry I opened it, but I'm sorry I don't have more.
