Six years ago, I drank one of these, decided it was infanticide, but projected that it would be good after a few years. I waited six, popped, decanted, waited 15 minutes, and tasted with prime NY strip, fresh green beans and roasted Kale salad with blue cheese and red onions. The wine is outstanding, a WOW wine. Delicious smooth berry flavor and dark red fruit like plum. There is a bit of Northern Rhone smooth wine pepper in the last few tastes before the wine is finished. One of the few times when a family dinner with three people caused a problem - they drank MY WINE! Quick, rush to CT and see if there is another bottle for a few more years out. Oh crap! This is my last bottle. If you have it, wait a few years to see if it gets even better. My guess is that it will.

For everything "wrong" with the 2011 vintage in Napa/Sonoma, Mike and team sure figured out how to make a great set of 2011 zins. This is certainly no except. Absolute killer nose, with a note of balance between something with fruit and something with finesse. An absolute steal (as are most Carlisle wines) for the price.

On the nose, faint aromas of purple fruit and an initial whiff of alcohol. On the palate, very subtle (almost fragile) blue and purple fruit flavors. Especially light and lithe for a Carlisle Syrah. It was definitely missing some of the olive, bay leaf, and forest floor complexities I have found characteristic of Mike Officer's other Syrahs (e.g.: Papa's Block or Rosella's).

I made the mistake of decanting this wine; after an hour, what fruit had been there was virtually undetectable, instead replaced by strong cedar and wood notes. Tannins had subsided to the point that the wine offered very little by the final sips. I would suggest not only drinking now, but also limiting service to a PnP with immediate consumption. I do not recommend decanting or letting O2 get the best of what fruit is left in this wine.

Pale gold color. Very floral and aromatic. Stone fruits, lychee and rosewater with a nice minerally finish. Very tasty and distinctive.

Nose of Dark Fruits, cooking spices, steak juices and flowers. Palate is medium bodied, nice silky texture and medium acidity with loads of dark fruits, tar, beef blood and maybe a bit of orange fruit at the tail end (not unusual for some Carlisle Syrah). This was very good, needs some freshness at the end but I very much enjoyed this over the course of 5 hours. I wouldn't hurry, it has 3-5 years of cellar life ahead easy.

Tasted over 3 nights. Wine left on the counter with the cork in. Day 1 wine smelled good. Dark color. Smooth. This drank well the first hour with just a hint of acid. After 60 minutes, serious acid arrived, making this difficult to continue drinking. The good news > HOLD this if you own it. On Day 2, the wine was much better. No acid. Really enjoyable. I saved a sip for the last day. The wine was ok, but I know my non-geek friends would have loved it. At $19 cost from the mailing list, it was good QPR, especially on the second day.

Poured very slightly chilled after a brief, vigorous decant . On the nose fig and raspberry. Immediate excellent flavor that gradually built through floral, pine, cola and anise notes. Soft mouth feel for so much flavor. Long finish. Yummy

Another stunning zinfandel from Carlisle. Not at all typical of a run of the mill zinfandel. The spice is subdued and the depth of flavor and mouth feel make for a memorable experience.

Pretty smooth on opening; improved with 30 minutes of air; balanced darker red fruit without tartness; cedar wood overtones; low level spice; no jam sense; nice complexity and finish.

Remarkable. This is a different kind of zin. Tons of black pepper on the nose, and roasted/charcoal. Savory, meaty, dark black fruit and a bit of earth in the background. I'm an unabashed zin fruit guy, and so enjoyed being surprised by this flavor profile. Was unexpected and very engaging. Good structure to the wine, still several years of good drinking ahead of it.

Had this more than a week ago at Park Kitchen in Portland. Yum. One of the best Carlisles I've had in some time, luscious and fruity, deep and smooth, not trying to be Claret and not in the least bit clumsy. Not exactly a terroir wine profile but the phat boysenberry, light herb and chocolate truffle element of the somewhat riper (?) site and the early-drinking pleasure differentiate Papera from some of the other Zins in the lineup. Drink or hold. The perfect wine to hook non-wine people into wine. Stuffy europhiles stay away!

Nose: Super interesting aromas of slate mineral and cornbread with red fruits, currents and herbs underneath. Palate: Red fruited, soft styled and feminine this is a really elegant Zin. The spices persist after the clean finish with an almost perfumy quality. I really like this interpretation of Zin that favors balance over unabashed fruit. Only flaw is some traces of heat on the finish but other than that the quality is there. Yet another great effort from the Officer/Maddox team.

Spicy and fruit forward, but not as much complexity as I was expecting. That said, still good QPR. I am curious to see how this evolves. Right now I don't see this as a long-term ager.

Lots of boom on the open. It started off with a huge, spicy splash of bright red fruits. It had just a hair of cloying burnt tar which I don't prefer. Absolutely no alcohol could be perceived. For $20 this is a great buy. I'm excited to try my other '12 zins from Carlisle.
