2013 Château Gruaud Larose

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/9/2016 - Jeff Leve wrote: 88 points

This blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc produced a medium bodied, red fruit, dominated wine with dusty tannins. Forward in style, the finish mixes sweet and tart, spicy, earthy, red berries.

Dinner with mature Left Bank Bordeaux (Restaurant van Baerle, Amsterdam): Worth of its fame, a fantastic 1982 (in the "Cordier 80-s style"). Dark colored. Well delineated nose with funky Cordier notes as wet tobacco, earth, cedar and lots of cherries. Super elegant, dense and silky textured on the palate with thick dark fruits, pebbles and well-integrated tannins in the finish.

Dinner with mature Left Bank Bordeaux (Restaurant van Baerle, Amsterdam): Great "Cordier of the 80-s" (as Jamie Manley notes below) style in the nose! Well delineated notes of wet earth, iron, leather, chocolate dipped cherries, pencil shaving and green leaves. Especially for 1986 soft and smooth on the palate but this bottle was a bit square and drying tannins in the finish. Nevertheless 94 points.

Drunk a dozen times since 2009. Was cheap en primeur thanks to a ridiculously low 88 points from Parker. The wine has always had a great nose, complexity and was approachable when young. What surprises me is how it is different every time and yet the wine is from the same two cases. In the past vanilla, plums, mocha, sweet blackcurrant, bitter cherries and liquorice, although not all from the same bottle. Always with a good tannic backbone and lots of soft fruit. This time with a nose of undergrowth giving way to meatiness, blackcurrant and liquorice. Excellent persistence on the finish. A lovely wine I suspect will continue to evolve although perfect now.

Ripe fruit, while still slightly firm with black fruit and roast meat character. Good on its own, very good with food.

Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux San Francisco. Nose of simple, ripe, dark fruit, dusty earth, and brewed tea leaves, more of the same on the palate, simple, lacks depth, light/medium body, disappointing, lots of soft tannins on a short/medium finish, at $58-no way.

UGC Bordeaux Tasting - 2013 Vintage (Bentley Reserve, SF): Very good. Well integrated aromatics. A bit tight but a satisfying palate. A great picture of 2013. Ripe but light with good firm but chewy tannins. Between 8.5 and 9.

Disjointed and shallow. Perhaps there are better bottles, but I found that this lacked character. 86-87

Filled with tart berries, tilled earth and signature Gruaud funk, this is a light footed wine that falls short, along with almost all 2013 wines that I have sampled so far. However, this has a brutally long finish and lots of structure to go with it. Sure its tight, its supposed to be...Its a newborn baby! Should it be soft, fat and flabby? drink or HOLD

UGC 2016 (Chicago, IL): Dirt! This is one of the most rustic wines of the tasting, with earthy and barnyard notes, as well as very coarse tannins. Lovely acids here, but the wine does come across a touch light.

16th of 24, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - back on form after 2014 note, though going through a slightly austere phase, like Lafite 95 on next night, nevertheless classy, refined and long, no rush! Fine plus (18/20).

Amazing. This wine shows its pedigree even in off-years. Still dark garnet on the glass very little to almost no rim. Mature notes of leather jacket, wet alpaca wool, along with blackberry and cassis. This is at a great point of development on the palate as well. Velvety smooth, thick, unctuous like a well extracted espresso. The fruit is still alive in the core and the finish is dusty, chalky. Brilliant. This may be my favorite second growth. Great effort.

@ Alma Minneapolis. This is probably the best bottle of '82 Gruaud we have had. Within 30 minutes of decanting it blew off barnyard smell and opened up. So enjoyable and drinking perfectly. Dark fruits, mustiness, forest earth, tobacco box....lovely Bordeaux.

This is developing quite nicely. The tobacco, cassis, herb and spicy cassis nose pairs perfectly with the classically styled, full bodied character, leaving with a blend of cassis, blackberry, earth and a touch of green tapanade in the finish. While this is nice now, it should get even better with a few more years in the bottle.

Excellent. Light-medium ruby with lighter edge. Classic (for me) Gruaud character with rich fragrance and round, soft balance. Red fruit with light tannins and noticeable acidity at the finish. Meaty notes. Has a bit more structure and is less opulent and open than the 1985. Exceptional to drink now; held well over 4 hours. Needed very short decant to open for business; this bottle needed 30-45 minutes in the decanter and time to warm from cellar temperature.

Binny's South Loop Bordeaux tasting. One of the sure highlights of the night, the aroma here was intoxicating featuring floral elements highlighted by an incredibly strong presence of violets and iris. flavors of cassis, cream, and a touch of vegetal/tobacco character. med+ acidity, med+ tannin, this is surely built for the long haul.
