2002 Château Gruaud Larose

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

Red with a carmine rim. In the bouquet a classical Bordeaux bouquet with cassis, other dark forest fruits, vanilla, sweet spiciness and beautiful oak. On the palate dark and red berries, just a touch of bell pepper, well dosed oak, beautiful acidity and still sticky, slightly drying tannin. There was a leftover of 1/3 bottle which I put in the cooler and drank the next day at room temperature. The second day it even showed more of its luxury. Great effort for 2002! Beautiful wine. Pnp still a bit too young. The second day perfectly ready. It should be no problem to cellar this wine until 2020. 90 - 92 for this time. One more bottle to go… ;-)

A serious sipping and snacking night at the Mandarin Oriental Grille Hong Kong! Folks, this is a MUST restaurant if you live near an international airport and love fine, creative dining a la Chef Uwe. It simply does not get better. We sat back and let Sommelier Ken aka Mr. Honest decide the wines. A classic, St. Julien vineyard with a special date for Hong Kong...and our wedding anniversary. It took a while to open and most definitely is not the best of this Chateau, but delicious in its own way!

No decant; barnyard nose, herbs, flowers, cinnamon; delicate, balanced structure, solid fruit, satin on the tongue (next day grip was more tense, as fruit faded a bit): schist, black cherry, plum, mint, chocolate; 18

From 375ml over Coq au Vin dinner. Earth, cherries, spice on nose. Palate not as pleasing as bottle I had 3 years ago. Was opened up end of night so perhaps would have gotten better with additional decant time.

Over Coq au Vin dinner, 375ml. Lots of stink, earth, musky cherries. Liked this quite a bit, great to contrast against the 2000 vintage.

Last bottle from a case purchased in the early '90s. Like saying goodbye to an old friend. I've been drinking through this case now for probably 20 - 25 years. Time to have the last one. It's lost intensity over the years, not a bit of tannin remains. Interesting 'cigar box' flavors and aromas, but my old friend has seen better days. Everything a little too resolved for me, nothing framing the wine. My 18yo son asked for a small glass (he likes beer!) and thought it tasted like water with a little something else in there. Drink up if you have them. Goodbye old friend.

Perfumed nose with red fruit, white pepper and light mustiness. Cherry, red plum, dry earth, tobacco, and black truffle on the palate. Black and white pepper emerge with air time. A wonderful wine in a great spot. 96+

Medium bodied, bright and fresh, with a lean to the red fruit side of the style range, the wine is better on the nose than the palate, finishing with crisp, crunchy, sweet and tart red fruits. This will develop more secondary aromas, but it's probably going to retain its style.

I have always found that Gruaud fights above its weight class, and learned that from a wine dinner I hosted with Mike Steinberger as a guest. This bottle came direct from Gruaud, filled to the top and in immaculate condition. All of the tasting notes below capture the essence of what you'll find in the bottle - an unmistakable Bordeaux profile with black fruit, tobacco, cassis, cedar, and mellowed tannins. I decant just about every bottle of Bordeaux I consume, and this one got 4 hours, then cooled down a bit (below room temperature) for initial consumption. A wonderful wine to share with friends (and paired with flank steak).

Pulled out of my cellar on a whim while celebrating. Was surprised it wasn't closed, too tannic, or too acidic. It was a fine, balanced wine with a good amount of elegance and judicious oak (seems to have integrated well since release), not really shut down, but I'm sure this will sing much better in 5+ years. I'll look forward to trying another then.

Bordeaux 1998 tasting by my friend who calls himself “100wines”: This will be one note for the 1988 and the 1998 tasted blind beside each other. The 1988 (Stored at perfect conditions since release) has a beautiful and elegant bouquet with good oak, salty licorice, graphite and a touch of barnyard. On the palate dark and red berries, some chocolate, green herbs and sweet spices, juicy acidity, a touch of sweetness and a bit drying tannin which still has some power as well. The 1998 was stored for many years at room temperature and had a beautiful bouquet with beautiful oak, sweet spices and some barnyard as well. On the palate red and dark berries, a lot of chocolate, mocha, some leather and tobacco, friendly acidity and melted tannin. Also a touch of metal at first, but with more air time the metal was gone and sweet spices and licorice appeared. Although the comparison is not really fair because of the different storing conditions, the conclusion for this evening was that the 1988 is more impressive because of its age and the future it still has. This bottle of the 1998 was fully mature and a with some more air still a great pleasure. I think both wines, when properly stored can still last until 2018 although there is not much reason to wait. I will score the wines similar to what I did on previous occasions: 1988 - 92 and 1998 - 90.

A rather delicate and feminine St. Julien, but very much in the GL style and expressing the elegance of the vintage. Blackcurrant verging on cassis, Victoria plum, pipe tobacco, cedar, wild mushrooms, beeswax, damp curtains. The tannins were surprisingly grippy and the acidity made this very drinkable. I think 2001 is a very underrated vintage and at this point in time is much better than clarets from 2000 on the whole.

Slow o'd for a couple hours and then vinturi'd. This seems approachable now, but you'd be better off leaving it alone for a few years. Graphite, meat, loam, sour cherry, red curant, and a fair amount of cedar on the spicy finish.

Bordeaux wine dinner; 6/18/15:
Pichon Lalande 1990 - Lighter color than others, I think passing its prime. A little dry on the finish but perfectly nice still. 90
Gruaud Larose 1989 - Very classic nose and palate of cedar and pine notes. Most silky palate of the bunch. Two at the table thought it was wine of the night. Not as much to my taste but very much classy Gruaud. 91
Cos 1986 - Funky barnyard nose. Deep palate with still strong tannin, but plenty of fruit coming through. Liked it but there was some brett there that to me, hurt. 92
Lynch Bages 1985 - For me, the wine of the night, largely due to the truly stunning nose. A tad dry on the palate but still long finish of dark fruit. 94

Classic old world BDX. Beautiful color still intact. The nose gave way to classic tobacco, forest floor, horse ox, and toasted oak. Secondary fruit notes of berry, cassis and winter berries. The palate was smooth and delicious with good structure intact. Dusty berry, earth floor, mild green notes and lead pencil. A mere perfect representation.

A little more evolved and lighter in colour. Minty nose, not much fruit, but no greenness. Lots of acidity on the palate, a bit astringent, again not much fruit, and rather short, a bit dull. 86-88

Oh my, when this wine is on, is it magnificent or what!? First off, a huge "Thank You" to Peter at Marty's for finding this local stash. So far, this is the best lot of 86 GL that has ever passed my lips. Before the cork was even completely out, I could get a small whiff of the heavenly aromas that lay in wait. I could smell this wine all day and night and die happy. Soaring wet tobacco, black tea, plum, cassis, rusted iron, summer rained earth, leather, and pencil. The nose is downright habit forming, no kidding. The palate is massive and just drenches your mouth with all of the above flavors. Layer after layer of 29 year old delight cascade down your throat. This is an 86, so the tannins are present, but they are completely integrated. This was a special bottle and I am biased toward the great Cordier wines of the 80's. But if you like this style of wine, then start searching for good examples of this wonderful 86 GL. I hope that all of your bottles perform like this beauty. 98 Pts
