1986 Château Gruaud LaroseSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
11/26/2016 - oldwines Likes this wine: 93 pointsDecanted around 5pm and drunk through about 10 pm. This wine is medium to dark garnet with slight bricking on the edge. Typically earthy nose with red fruit, tar and wet, smoldering leaves. Rich mouth feel with black raspberry, tar, cedar, graphite and an earthy currant aftertaste. Quite nice, but not as good as the previous bottle several months ago but was best after 3 hours breathing. |

11/26/2016 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 93 pointsThe 1986 Chateau Gruaud Larose was a garnet red color with little to no bricking. The wine had medium viscosity. The bouquet provided scents of wet leaves, earth, cherry and cigar box. The mouth feel was really nice, which was silky smooth. This wine still has tannin life and is very well structured! The taste provided an abundance of cherry, red fruits, wet stone and a subtle hint of tobacco and cedar. This wine needs to be decanted and needs at least 3 hours of air prior to tasting. Drink now to 2026. Score 93 |

10/24/2016 - boses wrote: 90 pointsSuper integrated with typical mature Bordeaux typicity and st.julien characteristics - a little heavy on the Brett initially but it blows off fast to reveal nice fruit and a chalky minerally backbone that surprises you a bit ! Very luscious still and the finish is quite long. Pleasing mature bottle ! |

11/19/2016 - rwpalmer wrote: 92 pointsWell, a Princess must have come along and kissed the Frog. Having felt that this wine would linger forever lifeless, imagine my delight at finding a warm aroma of coffee bean and a complex old claret nose. Tannins resolved and with low acidity just too easy to drink. The 2003 clarets have gone through so many incarnations in their relatively short lives that I shy away from making any future predictions. |

11/12/2016 - Goldstone Likes this wine: 94 pointsDaniel's 50th Birthday Dinner (Seasons By Olivier E., 3/F, Two Lee Gardens, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong): (From magnum) Dusky, semi-opaque faded plum-red colour. Attractive nose of damp old hay and a nice shitty element.....we are in farmyards here. Palate is absolutely beautiful - harmonious and fully mature, with great rounded and mature but not autumnal fruit. Great tannic backbone and structure. Tons of power on the finish and very reverberant inside the head. This drank like a 1989 rather than a wine 23 years its elder. This was fantastic with the slow-poached egg and white truffle. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

11/18/2016 - Francophile1 Likes this wine: 92 pointsGotta love the hubastank in this wine! Gruaud Larose can always be counted on for a little funk in their wine. If you like brett, barnyard, grandmas closet, leather shoe, stewed blackberries, damp earth, tobacco, and a touch of licorice, you will like this wine. Fully mature and drinking great now. Love the 'milky' consistency on this wine. It is like the Leroy of Bordeaux in consistency. Yum! 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

11/17/2016 - JonnyG wrote: 86 pointsA bit tired and thin, with an ash-dominated nose and loads of brett. Muted Concord grape flavors and precious little structure left. Gentle if one is in a charitable mood, else just a bit too dried out. |

11/13/2016 - deverett wrote: 90 pointsStill travelling pretty nicely, classically styled claret in a perfect drinking window. Not the best of vintages which shows in the length and softness of the wine. Still has loads of great Bordeaux stuffing, cedar and graphite on the nose, black currant and charcuterie flavours with that creamy oakiness that fills out the palate. Not sure this will ever get much better than right now so happy to drink the remaining bottles in the short term. |

11/12/2016 - aquacongas Likes this wine: 97 pointsBest Bottle Red in Lucerne without a theme (Hopfenkranz in Lucerne): Typical left bank Bx in the nose, for me the 3rd best wine of the evening, very elegant but with masculin ripe tannin structure, cassis, cedar, leather some truffles but very lively, no hurry to drink but in this condition reaching his peak, started 95-96 and ending 97 two hours later |

11/11/2016 - whybuyone Likes this wine: NRThis was quite enjoyable but I have to say it falls way short of the 61 vintages I've had in the past. It's obviously not a fair comparison but it's a true testament to vintage. |

1/7/2017 - Jeff Leve wrote: 96 pointsFirst Growth in quality, this has been a consistent winner for decades. It is the quintessential example of what aged, Left Bank Bordeaux is all about. It is full bodied, deep, concentrated and long. Stylistically, it offers a gentleman's, refined austerity, with fresh, bright, ripe berries and all the smells of a great cigar store! I've had better bottles, and this was quite strong. |

11/7/2016 - Jeff Leve wrote: 90 pointsHanging on to life buy a slim thread, there was more to like with the smoky, earthy, animalistic, spicy, cigar box nose, than on the full bodied, but sweet and tart, red berry and spice palate. Clearly fading, this needs to be consumed, if you are of course lucky enough to have a bottle in your cellar. |

11/7/2016 - Jeff Leve wrote: 95 pointsI suppose this is what to expect from the 1986, when it hits 90 years of age. The sensuous, full bodied, silky, patina of age is all over the cassis, tobacco, spice and earthy charms. The nose, with its cigar store essence and the finish that tasted as good as it felt was a real turn on. Why can't they make wines like this at Gruaud Larose any more? 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

11/7/2016 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 92 pointsPristine bottle, perfect cork, level into neck. Unlike the bottle tasted in 2012 completely clean and fresh, no farmyard or anything similar. Immediately attractive straight from the bottle and straight from the cellar, cassis and cedar, vibrant and lively and with a wonderful balance. There is a dusty minerality on the nose, the palate displays a medium weight, the grippy tannins have a fine grain and the flavour profile is precise and transparent; length is very good. A classic. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |
