Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

Displaying a lightness in color, there is a mature, softness to the dark berries, with a perfume of earth, cherries and fresh herbs that feel round and soft in the berry, filled finish. This is not a wine to hold for further aging.

Quite austere to begin with, but developes some sweetness after being opened for an hour or so. Not quite as good on the 2nd day - less sweetness and more ashen, but still quite attractive.

2 bottles tasted. Bottom line. This is an overextracted, out of balance Graves. This Chateau is trying to do too much with low quality fruit.

Improved with 30 minutes of air. Nice rich ruby color, some subtle lightening of the edges. Really interesting profile with this wine. Had the typical Pessac elements, with really dark fruits, some smokiness, soil, herbs, and fresh minerals. Also had lots of coffee and floral notes, reminiscent of a Margaux at times. Medium-bodied, with very fine tannins. Medium acidity. There is enough fruit to keep this going for awhile longer, but perhaps the structure won't provide serious longevity. For now, this is a fairly elegant wine that seems well-balanced at this point. At least a few years left at this nice stage.

Wine Education Service - Bordeaux - Graves (LSE): Dense with a little age.
Some development and fruit on the nose.
Complex, fruit, spice, chocolate, delicious, smooth and very long.

Fantastic nose unfortunately the palate does not match up. Good wine overall though. Would hold any remaining bottles for further development.

Big wine with a tad of the ol pencil lead. Dark fruit, some sediment. Could use a few years to mellow out.

Westchester Wine School: Pessac Leognan Tasting (White Plains, NY): Drank at WWS Pessac tasting. Ruby red at core. Not much showing on the nose or palate. Still showing young, and quite tannic. Black fruit dominant, but not particular complex or well-balanced at this time. Also a bit on the thin side for a fairly young wine.

Dark, dry. Black current, tar, forest floor. A bit closed down at the moment, finish is relatively short; tannins still present. Mellowed out after being open for a while; needs at least a couple of hours to breathe. Best days still ahead.

The espresso bean, truffle and cherry tones in the nose are followed by a medium bodied, soft, forward wine with a kiss of smoke, oak and black cherries in the finish that can be enjoyed in its youth.

Not Chateau Y or Haut-Brion, but darn tasty and great value. If you like white Bordeaux (not Sauternes), then more than worthy to sip. All the elements, especially the structure of Semillion. A winner!!!

My previous note said to cellar it for at least another year, yet I opened another one. At least this time I left even more for the 2nd day knowing how much better it would be. And it was; even better than last time. So definitely either wait at least 2-3 years or give it a good 12-24 hour decant (open it, decant, put it back in the bottle, and put it back in the cellar for the next day). Excellent value.

Overall a good pace of development so far. A very earthy base in the nose. Also has leather and tobacco.

Unlike the 2006 (which I find quite tannic) the tannins are polished and fine grained, and more consistent with the 2008. The wine is a bit restrained in the mouth now with primary notes of tobacco, cassis, iron, and lighter notes of coffee and bitter chocolate.

There is a decent finish on this. Right now this is down the fairway but has not yet developed the complexity I desire. As a result this is good but does not merit a higher score yet.

This seems unlikely to go beyond 12-15 years and probably will be best enjoyed over the next 5-7 years.
