A real winner. 1999s are forward, but as this is Leoville Barton there is great structure, polish and freshness. The well integrated acidity is really key and it's hard to imagine this wine being older than 10 years as a result. Fresh, glossy black cherry fruit with a little pencil shavings and minerality. Still has lots of primary fruit and I think this is not yet quite at peak. The good natured softness of the vintage is actually a positive right now. Finish is very good if not as long as a great vintage would be. Hats of to Leoville Barton!!

Pnp. Doesn't need a lot of air. I doubt that this will have a big future but it's beautiful to drink now.

Tasting, brief note. Good black fruit with slightly firm textures, but enough extract to retain balance. Cellar for a few years, 90 point potential here.

Soft fruit, quite nice and elegant and pencilly but dull. Probably at its peak fruit-wise though plenty of tannin left.

UGC Annual Bordeaux Tasting (The Drake Hotel, Chicago, IL): brief tasting note. nose was easily the most expressive of all the reds tasted today, with black and blue fruits in spades; flavors of the same. med acid, and less tannic than might be expected. the vintage featured a higher percentage of cabernet than usual (82%).

Very black primary fruit, incense, tobacco leaves.... A wall of tannins, super fresh acidity, tastes like a super young wine, don't touch it for the next 10 years!! 93+/100

Quite nice for the vintage, and it's going to drink well young, which is something you do not often find in Leoville Barton. The wine provides a medium bodied, early drinking, soft textured, cassis and plum character, with hints of cedar, tobacco and earth. A few years in the cellar should be about right.

Drank from magnum last nite at Mistrals in Vt. Didn't decant, but should have. A bit of funk on the nose at first, which blew off shortly after opening revealing aromas of blackberries, earth and some barnyard. Still some fruit here--all black--but it's doesn't seem overly ripe. The wine is now predominantly tertiary with lots of earth, cedar, leather and some forest floor. Tannins remain but are soft and chalky, not at all grippy. Decent length with good level of complexity. This wine continues to lack in concentration and depth in the mid-palate (as I've mentioned before in previous tastings). It's a very pleasant wine, but nothing extravagant or particularly memorable.

I opened a Leoville Barton 2003 and 2007 two hours before the beginning of the Superbowl to decant. The 2007 smelled of raw, wet concrete. Came across as tight with a metallic finish. We left most of the wine in the decanter until the following night. It now has a fresher, more lively nose and the taste, balance and finish are significantly more pleasing. It is a totally different and much better wine after a day of decanting. I keep learning this over and over again: decant much longer!

Poured from a 375 with about 3 hours to breathe and open up. Aromas are somewhat closed but there are tones of cedar, brush, cassis and faint incense. On the palate the tannins are dusty. The flavor profile includes cedar, tobacco, blackberries, savory herbs, and charcoal. The fruit takes a back seat to the other flavors. The finish ends somewhat abruptly and dried out. Far less tannic than the 1995 Pavie Macquin we have consumed, this is unlikely to improve. A fine claret but nothing spectacular.

Blackberry nose with leather tack and a bit of slate on the nose. This was a phenomenal bottle. Decanted 60 min and drank over dinner with the best of friends. Smooth almost to a fault. Generous blackberry and toast. Can't wait until the next time I visit this, and I will.

Strong line of acidity initially dominates but it all comes together pretty well after a couple of hours with cooked fruit, cigarettes, leather and a touch of balsamico. Not very ripe but not underripe either and with some pleasant green pepper notes. Not outstanding by the standards of an estate now making some of the best wines in Bordeaux and hence the world, but good for a difficult vintage in which, in many cases, the fruit has faded away before the tannins. There is just enough fruit here and the tannins have receded sufficiently to make this a medium-bodied, classically resolved, claret. One that diehard claret aficionados will appreciate.

Flickinger Customer Appreciation Tasting (Casino Club - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Very good depth and concentration, but I didn't particularly like the assertive tannins and the corresponding balance. I would imagine this is a Barton that requires significant more cellar time, but there's plenty of upside if greater harmony is the result.

Sitter lenge i. Nydelig, rett og slett. Perfekt match til entrecote med bearnaise. På tross av at tanninene nesten ikke kjennes, er de der og skjærer rett gjennom fettet i munnen.

1975 Château Léoville Barton

Opened this last week to celebrate my son in law's 40th. Lucky guy, I have plenty of 75's! This is the third bottle I've uncorked over the years, high shoulder fill, and wasn't expecting much since the first two were rather disappointing and one dimensional. However in this case a good thing came to one who waited. As soon as I pulled the cork and took a whiff I knew I was in for a treat, the aroma was just beautiful. I had to check the label and make sure this was a 75 Barton! Knowing how hard the 75's are I let it breath in decanter for two hours. Very nice, well balanced, medium bodied, surprisingly youthful. It showed some pedigree for sure as it kept developing in the glass with nice mid pallet fruit . I have two more bottles to look forward to, no rush. Hopefully it was the extra time in my cellar that finally delivered as opposed to this just being a way above average bottle.....so far.
The wine looks violet colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like strawberry. The body is medium/full. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has deep ruby color, with fading rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium intensity aromas of black fruit of cassis, plum and blackberry, dried fruit of prune, animal notes of leather, mineral notes of graphite, pungent spice of licorice, kernel notes of mocha, maturity notes of savory, oak notes of cedar. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin of ripe but a bit grippy in texture, medium alcohol and medium body, demonstrating medium (+) intensity of flavors including black fruit of cassis and blackberry, herbal notes of Chinese medicine, pungent spice of licorice, sweet spice of clove. The wine has a medium finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality St-Julien with good intensity on the nose showing complex characters, with a wide range of aromas, the wine has an elegance structure, with nice acidity, lively but the tannin is a bit too grippy. The palate has good concentration too with a reasonable finish. It is ready to drink now but can further develop for another 3-5 years.

Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL): Having this right after the St. Pierre really puts into focus how dark and deep this wine is. Lots of dust and sweet black fruit on the palate. The tannins aren't too coarse at this point. An excellent bottle of Bordeaux that is doing just fine right now, though I bet there's room for aging.

After tasting the 2013 a few days ago, I have a bit of an issue. This rating is stingy when I think of the 13's Just emphasizes that we are never absolutely objective.....

This shows graphite and muted fruit on nose. Colour is mature, no signs of brown

Palate has tannins fully integrated, but still enough tenacity for another seven years or so

As usual, this presents a reliable offering. Not traditional LB, a bit more softness than I would have expected at this point. Full nose, roundness on palate and good ripeness.
Still in the top quartile for value
