Opened 2 bottles, the first had been stored in Cannes, France in a warm cellar - perfectly à point. The second had been stored in London in a cold cellar, was drinking much younger, should probably have decanted an hour or two beforehand. Both were good if not the best L-B i've had. If stored properly this has many years' life left IMO..

S&E Wine - Burgundy Blind tasting with a surprise blind Lynch Bages Vertical Tasting (Our home): Somewhat plain and still young. I don't think this has yet integrated fully. The acidity is showing and silkiness is not yet there.

S&E Wine - Burgundy Blind tasting with a surprise blind Lynch Bages Vertical Tasting (Our home): Chalky nose (very different from the other 2 in the vertical flight)

Lighter than the other two and leaner too. Not great for me. Light fruit on the nose.

Showing real signs of evolution in colour. Nose has taken on secondary characteriatics with dried fruit. Slight alcoholic scent. Enjoyable with lamb rump but this is one to drink up and enjoy sooner than later.

S&E Wine - Burgundy Blind tasting with a surprise blind Lynch Bages Vertical Tasting (Our home): Decanted for 4.5 hours

Mushrooms and a clean forest floor on the nose - Good strong tannins (8/10) and definitely the best of the LB tonight. This actually appeared to be the youngest and has many more years of life in it. Very youthful.

Full bodied and rich and silky with a hint of fruit in the main body. Mint came through at the end of the palate.

Tasting, brief note. Moderate fruit fruit with a little cigarbox. Startsforward, ends somewhat firm. Just OK, perhaps 86-87 point potential.

Ch. Lynch Bages, Paulliac, 5eme grand cru classe, 1996. At 20 years old this is now fully mature but has the perfect balance of acidity, fruit and tanins to last another 20 years. Delicate nose, black fruits, touch of cedar and floral note. Great harmony and elegance. Subtle cassis, cigar box and pencil lead notes. Tannins soft and well integrated but still persistent. Primary fruit notes still to the fore. Excellent acidity and freshness. This wine is still so youthful, great finesse and verve, long and balanced. 94

Strangely unbalanced on first pour, took about 20 minutes to come together in the glass (probably served too cold)..white Bordeaux typicity was there, eventually. Didn't blow me away though, not even close to previous Blanc LBs I've had, though I find their reds similarly inconsistent - not cheap either, frankly..

Decanted 2+ hours. Still feels like it has 10-20 years left! Strong notes of graphite, gravel, green pepper and smoked meats. Really complex and rewarding.

UGC Annual Bordeaux Tasting (The Drake Hotel, Chicago, IL): very brief tasting note. incredibly tannic, hard to assess the quality and concentration of the underlying fruit in a brief tasting. surely needs time.

With a nose of fresh cassis, thyme, cedar wood and earthy scents, this medium bodied wine is forward, with a tangy, bright, spicy, red plum and cassis note in the finish.

A more austere, classic and introverted Lynch Bages. Autumnal earthy aromas with coffee, menthol, cassis, cedar, plums, blackcurrants and leather hints. Medium bodied elegant and unshowy palate with very good concentration and a nice layered feel. Ends medium, freshly fruited earthy and austere. Drink up in the next 5 years.

Decanted about 3-4 hours before tasting. What a lovely wine. It seems ridiculous to say this but I think this needs more time in the bottle. The color is bright and lively and dense, with only slight bricking. Nice complex nose of roasted root vegetables, leather, red fruits, and other lovely aromas. The palate is smooth, rich and complex – rounded red fruits (currants), plums, leather, pencil lead. The finish is pretty long, though there is a very slight tartness or bitterness. Still some strong tannins, suggesting this will last for the long haul. This just tastes young and even a bit closed to me. Notwithstanding, we finished the bottle in one night….. 94+

Cloudy pinkish color. Needs about an hour or two to open up, and when it does, it opens to soft fruit with pinkish hues and iron. Compact on the palate and doesn't really go long, but still enjoyable to drink.

Beautiful nose typical of 1996 Pauillac. Cassis, leather, tobacco, graphite, lead pencil. Dark rich ruby color, needed two hours in decanter to balance out its tannic and solid structure. Medium to full bodied, finishes long and sweet with well resolved tannins. Excellent.

Dinner with mature Left Bank Bordeaux (Restaurant van Baerle, Amsterdam): Immediately recognizable as 1975 Lynch Bages; 'iron, earth and medicine box'; Love this nose. Color bit cloudy, orange and light. On the medium-bodied palate tones of medicine box, pronounced iron. But getting bit square and one-dimensional over age. Drink now or soon.

This way exceeded my expectations, as I've rarely been an LB blanc fan. Apple, grapefruit and lemon peel, with nice flavors and textural interest. I might have to give this wine another try or two.

Dark core, garnet rim; dusty, earthy, mushroom, stewed fruit, clay, green pepper, some funk, cigar, darker fruit; soft palate, dark fruit, blackberry, plum; very nice but lacking a little balance and some nobility, good now but I think it needs 5 more years; 93+.

Classic, leather, tobacco and a touch of meat on the nose, with green pepper becoming more obvious with air. Very nicely resolved but still basically youthful - not getting really mature complexity. A big wine, but sort of stately rather than powerful. Textbook claret and very good.
