Occasional dinner group; TOP Bordeaux 1994: Beautiful and classical bouquet with cassis, graphite, cedar, tobacco and forest floor. On the palate still a lot of dark forest fruits, a touch of bell pepper, beautiful acidity and slightly drying tannin. Overall a beautiful and classical mature Bordeaux with still some power left for a few more years. 93 - 94

Dinner with mature Left Bank Bordeaux (Restaurant van Baerle, Amsterdam): Well delineated on the complex nose with earth, (orange) fruits, cedar and iron notes. Full bodied, smooth and super elegant on the palate with enough fruit and tannin for another 20 years of further aging. Long lingering on, a smooth end with some iron notes. Not as pronounced (on the palate) as some other bottles.

Chris' Housewarming (Hamilton, ON): Stunning Bordeaux. Best I've had in a long time and possibly the best Montrose ever? The nose is wildly exotic with perfectly ripe dark fruit. The complexity is seamless and perfect. The nose is of blackberry, cassis, slight bandaid, very slightly herbal, mixed baking spices, smoked meat, leather, pipe tobacco, sweet cedar, spice box (it goes on and on). The palate is round, sleamless, and velvity. The long finish is dark, sweet, complex, and long.

Yes!!!!!.....cedar, leather, earth, forrest floor, cassis, black currant, spice.
Palate is so svelte.......this is the business. Pure sweet, dark, spicey fruit augmented with earth, cedar, pipe tobacco, forest floor, smoke, pencil lead, graphite, and plum.
Finish is long, layered and elegant.
Awesome wine!!!! Reference point bordeaux

Fully mature nose and flavor profile. Round and concentrated black fruit but lacks depth and finish. Enjoyable but not an outstanding 1982.

With 1990 Montrose, similar to Jekyll and Hyde, you never know who is going to show up as some bottles are completely marred by brett. Fortunately, this was a fresh, clean bottle and it was singing. Still young, but past the primary stage, the wine is big, powerful, concentrated, yet regal in its bearing. The fruit is fresh, earthy and vibrant, and the finish sticks with you for close to 50 seconds. 2 hours of air helped, but 10 more years of age will help even more.

A super example of this wine in all its tobacco, cassis, spice, earth, cigar box and cedar wood charm. Full bodied, concentrated, masculine, yet refined, the finish kept going, with close to 60 seconds of fresh, spicy, ripe fruits that shifted from black to red. The bottle was decanted for about 2 hours before serving. Thi was much better than the last bottle I tasted about 6 months ago.

Tasted blind. Browner color than the Cos d'Estournel 1989 and the Lilian Ladouys 1989 tasted against it. Not as dense and heavy as those ones either. Very muted nose. Some manure and thin fruit. Palate is also thin and boring. Obvious flaw.

89 vs 90 tasting. A wine I have had on multiple occasions and have always liked a lot. Tonight it didn't show as well. Next to the 90 I felt the nose was off a bit with some funky flavors. Others liked it better than the 90.

Decanted 1½ hour. My first Montrose and what a start! It is so balanced, intense and complex as it keeps on developing the glass. Very smooth and with a +45 sec lenght. Was overrun by Pontet-Canet 2000 on the night, but perhaps it will be even better in 5-10 years. Buy it and bury it in the cellar.

This is amazing stuff. Putting the infanticide aside, this is a dream wine. It's got it all, dark fruits, red currants, graphite, espresso. The palate is packed with fruits and thick tannins ensuring a long finish. This is one for the library. Leave it alone if you can resist the temptation. 95+

This 16 year old Bordeaux from St Estephe is fully mature. I tasted it at 14 and it still had some youth about it then. Now, the colour has mellowed from ruby to mahogany still retaining an inky core. The bouquet has several layers with a bottom note of earth, forest floor and decayed wood. There is a top note of violets and roses. There are spices like cinnamon. There is a hint of youthful blackcurrant. The palate is fullbodied which is not surprising as 2000 was one if the greatest vintages in Bordeaux. Well balanced and elegant. Art, history and nature in a glass.

Institute of Masters of Wine - 2011 Bdx Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): So good! Hints of lambic and Valrhona-dipped blackcurrant. New oak, earth, and spiced brett - all integrated.
Slightly lighter in fruit/ripeness than the Pauillacs, with firm tannins and just moderate acid.

1989/1990 Bordeaux Dinner (Feast & Imbibe - Evanston, IL): Perfection! Dark ruby in the glass. My first note upon smelling the wine ... "Holy fu**ing shit!" The aromatics literally explode from the glass with a combination of power/grace and breadth/depth that blew me away. Aromas were varied and deep including bright fruit, earth/funk tones, mineral, tobacco, cigar box and bell pepper. In the mouth this wine packs power and richness with amazing levels of elegance. Layers of flavor and texture. Vibrant acids and lively acidity. And a long, lingering and penetrating finish. Perfection in a glass.

This is a super wine and vintage of Montrose that keeps improving with age. We should all age this well. Still young, the wine retains a depth of color. The perfume, with its black fruit, cigar box, spice and forest floor nose grabs. On the palate, the dense, powerful wine is even better with a concentrated blast of ripe, dark berries, ripe tannins and sweet cassis in the end note. This beauty is good now and will be even better in 5, 10, 15 or 20 years! If you like Montrose, or just great Bordeaux, this is worth laying a few bottles down in your cellar.

Barnyard, some toasted oak, coffee, chocolate, ceder, leather, dark fruit, liquorice, a bit of dirt and wet soil, butter and cucumber water.

Dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ tannins, high intensity, and a long finish with a touch of oaky bitterness.

A nice Bordeaux in a fairly classic style. Open and accessible on the nose, tighter on the palate. Could need a few more years in the cellar to polish off the oak.

This wine was enjoyable to drink. It did not seem to have much depth and will never be or is a blockbuster. This wine's tannins had softened, but still was present. Dark inky look to it with still lots of red fruit in the taste. Finish was not particularly long. Good wine from an average vintage.
