Surprisingly light and elegant. Earlier this wine has been rustique and masculine. Aromas of minerals, iron, grafite etc. Appears young and fruity.

Le Montrose 1999 était encore fermé, arômes très discrets de goudron, crayon mine, chocolat et moka. Il montre une certaine austérité en bouche avec une absence de fruits. Il vaut bien le carafe d'avance.

This bottle had endured some questionable storage over the years, which meant I picked it up for a song, but opening it was a roll of the dice. Lucky for me, the wine had not only survived but was in great shape, showing a youthful vigor that belied its age. The color was a dark ruby, with a mature BDX nose of dried flowers, cedar, and cigar smoke. At first, the palate was almost juicy in its powerful acidity, but as it breathed up, the acids came into line, allowing a distinctive Montrose dark fruit and mineral profile to emerge (and even a little tannic grip) in a very balanced and beautiful profile.

Stewed fruit, spice and must on the nose. Palate is largely composed of undelineated fruit. Finish shortens with air time and becomes astringent. Enjoyable but not particularly notable at this stage.

This is another note of the same wine on the same day. The story is that we got both wine completely blind, not even knowing it was a Bordeaux. The first glass (which is my other tasting note) came from a 0.75 bottle and this note is from the wine that came from magnum. And no one of the six tasters recognized these two wines as being the same wine. The wine from magnum showed a beautiful and smoky bouquet with dark forest fruits and beautiful luxurious oak as well as a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate cassis, luxurious oak, a touch of pleasant sweetness, some good chocolate, beautifully fresh acidity and soft tannin. Also this wine from magnum is fully mature, but showed just a bit more freshness and a longer future ahead. We thanked our host for pouring those two mature bottles completely blind to experience the difference because of the bottle size. This magnum wine scored one point more.

Beautiful and mature bouquet with still a bit of cassis, graphite, cedar, tobacco and a touch of beautiful barnyard. On the palate mature cassis and other dark forest fruits, beautiful acidity and completely integrated tannin. A beautiful and classical Bordeaux at its absolute peak.

Drank with friends at a local restaurant after a brief decant.
Fantastic juice! Dark ruby/garnet without a hint of sediment, this wine is all dark fruit, berries and a hint of mocha. plush in the mouth with a long, long finish. My tablemates scored it similarly and agreed further improvement through bottle age is unlikely.

A pure coincidence; two blind tastings this week and two times Montrose 1998. This bottle; beautiful bouquet with cassis, beautiful oak, cedar and a touch of pleasant barnyard. On the palate the same luxury. Dark forest fruits, beautiful acidity and round tannin with still a good bite. Much more fresh and youthful than the bottle I had earlier this week and more in line with my tasting note from 2013. This bottle came from a different cellar than my previous two notes, but considering the two bottles of this week, there is bottle variance. Scored the wine of tonight 93 with still a future until at least 2020.

2nd of 24, decanted an hour, as note of November 14 with earth/hot brick notes more evident, again impressive depth of fruit, long life ahead. Fine plus (18/20).

A big, juicy, mineral driven, blackberry filled, tobacco, smoke, cigar box, Asian spice, Cuban cigar and cassis filled perfume lets you know you’re not in OZ anymore. This is concentrated, full bodied, powerful, rich, intense and very tannic. Yet, the tannins are so ripe, there is so much rich fruit, the wine can be enjoyed today if you like a primary drinking experience. It’s lush, mouth filling, regal and refined.

Tasted a glass with coravin. Deep almost inky color. The nose was very closed for better than 30 minutes in the glass and then opened to classic notes of dark berries and spice, with a bit a leather and mushroom. It really jumps into the mouth with big flavors and then finishes with a bit of dirt flavor. The fruit is powerful but the wine is balanced with sweet tannins and nice acid. This wine was very good and I think will still improve as the tannins smooth out a bit more.

Drank the rest with friends, no difference in wine (meaning no coravin effect that I could taste). Same notes as above, but was drinking with food and it was a great compliment to the steak. My friends really enjoyed this treat.

Bordeaux 1998 tasting by my friend who calls himself “100wines”: Beautiful bouquet with cassis, leather and tobacco and also a firm amount of barnyard. On the palate a luxurious wine with beautiful oak, red and dark berries and beautiful acidity. Soft and mature tannin with a pleasant bite. Overall this bottle seemed to be quite much more mature compared to the one I tasted two years ago. It spreads through the mouth beautifully, has a good length and is elegant as well.

I enjoyed this wine. It has a green, leafy character a bit for an aromatic, along with a brewed coffee note. Cedar, currant, chalky and it seemed quite young to me. What the hell do I know, I guess, as I rarely drink Bdx so take my note FWIW.

In my memory, the last bottle (1 year ago) was better. Right now it lacked a little roundness.

I still believe that in 2-3 years this will be better.

Served during a tasting on the four French grapes. Medium-dark purple. Expressive nose that is so typical Medoc. Earthy, smoky, dark fruit with a clear masculine touch. On the palate medium bodied, clean and dry but not drying due to the softness the 2007 vintage always had. The group of the tasting was impressed by this wine's aromatic depth and how well it went with the Yakitori dishes. A terrific showing of this estate in a less than stellar vintage.

A tremendous wine, ripe but no heat showing despite the vintage. Aromas of red fruit, licorice and chocolate. Silky and seamless on the palate: lush notes of raspberry, currants, licorice and black olive, finishing elegantly with ripe, delicious tannins.

Some Grilling with the Toronto Cru (Toronto, ON): There is already moderate bricking on this pristine bottle. Right off the bat there is that classic, awesome exotic Montrose nose. Wow! Aromas of black cherry, exotic spice, animal, cedar, grilled meat, game and red currants waft from the glass. The palate reveals that this is still a classically styled Bordeaux with some slightly green and lean edges along with some elevated red fruited acid (think cranberry and red currant). The tannin is fairly resolved, only around medium minus in presence. Overall a very nice bordeaux from a very nice vintage executed in a classic style. Drinking well now and will undoubtedly live a while longer yet.

AYAYAYE! Just by putting your nose close to the glass, you're getting an amazing experience. Probably at its peak right now, but it should stay there for quite a while. Perfect balance, super complex and tasty, with a very long finish. Typical St-Estephe tiertiary aromas (barnyard, tobacco, leather...) but in a super concentrated way. Wine of the night for everyone - Tied for second place was Clos Lapostolle 2008 and Abreu Cabernet 1996...oh what a night :)

Old Bordeaux Tasting en Magnum (Brooklyn Wine Exchange (BWe)): All wines were en magnum and double decanted an hour before

Dark ruby core with a garnet rim. Intense scent of dark fruits, cassis, spice and smoke. Characteristically rustic yet complex, nicely balanced, still showing a bright, firm structure for this 45 year old. Still going strong and continuing to evolve over the next few hours. A classic grippy claret.

Tough competition this evening coming in 3rd vs. 1970 Palmer and HB
