The fruits, tannins finish are coming together nicely. It is hard to believe that this is going to get better but I think that it might. I just passed on a chance to get the 2005 for $130. A bit pricy for me but rumored to be much better than the 2004.

Bordeaux Confidential SF (SF): decanted 3 hours in advance)
54% cab 46% merlot
Star-bright gorgeous ruby-red in the glass.
On the nose, bretty, and a bit of lambic character (some refermentation in the bottle?).
On the palate, undeniably great balance. Alcohol is only 13.2% but feels a bit more elevated. It makes sense to me that this is dominated by cabernet - it’s ripe, it’s full, but with less of the fur coat of Merlot.
Less plummy, dominated by tart dark cherry. But still a bit plush. Oak isn’t apparent to me. Good structure, aggressive tannins, ripe fruit.
Score: Around 9.

Tasted a glass with coravin. Deep almost inky color. The nose was very closed for better than 30 minutes in the glass and then opened to classic notes of dark berries and spice, with a bit a leather and mushroom. It really jumps into the mouth with big flavors and then finishes with a bit of dirt flavor. The fruit is powerful but the wine is balanced with sweet tannins and nice acid. This wine was very good and I think will still improve as the tannins smooth out a bit more.

70s French Wines (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, Forum): Dark Ruby with vibrant hue and brickish tinge. Nice color.
It opens up nicely with loads of blackcurrant, cherry and hints of earth and leather. It continue to develop some deep soil and rustic nose in the glass.
Showing nice fruits on palate but it has a distinct mineral, iron notes, along with earth, tobacco and hints of soy sauce. Good freshness on palate. Soft chewy tannins with long finish.
It has a strong showing tonight and very pleasant but still humbled by the fabulous St. Émilion duo that tasted tonight.

Dark fruit, smoke, gravel, graphite on the nose. Carried through to the palate. This was excellent, but next to the 1990, this seemed a touch more angular and not as full in the mouth.

Nose - roasty, charcoal, mostly oak on the nose
Mouth - big berry fruit, yet sleek, mouthcoating tannins, pencil lead, graphite. Nice but somewhat unyielding.

Opened in the name of research but wish I had not. Still far far too young for my taste although I suspect it will eventually be very fine indeed. Trouble is I doubt very much whether I will be around to try it.

Tasted at the Zachys Bordeaux Confidential tasting on 5/14/15. This was one of the best reds I tasted that evening. Cherries, mushrooms. Medium-bodied, well integrated and long, chewy finish. Terrific.

Bottle from the chateau and was recorded in 2014. Wow this is still so young. Looks like a wine from the 80s. Nose of old vine and grapes gives it away as an older wine but it is still a beautiful ruby with a faint clear rim on the edge. Lovely old Bordeaux wine flavours and a real treat from Herve. Many thanks to the chateau for coming to see us I. HK!

At last this wine is starting to show itself. Really pleasant and starting to show interesting secondary characteristics of leather and nutmeg and cedar spiceness. Open on the palate with healthy cherry infused fruit and silky tannins. Delicious and under appreciated vintage from Montrose.

Way more impressive than the 2009 had at the same lunch, much more approachable but after all is a Montrose and their wines take so long to come around! Beautiful ruby with a very delicate perfume of ripe heathy Cassis fruit. Lovely mouthfeel and balance, great length and flavour. Sell 2009 to buy this better vintage!

Really not sure why there are so many rave reviews about this vintage. Yes it is deep purple and does contain a lot of interesting and mesmerizing fruit and spice on the nose which will be first class in about 20 years but tasters should look beyond what is a first growth nose and taste the underlying fruit. What I found was that there was a touch of phenolic unripeness and beyond the immediate fruit there is a touch of greenness and hollowness in the mid-palate. The finish is long but again I worry that there is something missing for the long haul. It certainly is no where close to perfection and I caution readers not to believe the hype that this is a 96-100 point wine.

I appear to be in the minority here but to me this wine is out of balance with too much acid and too little fruit. Loads of graphite and some earthiness and spice. Day two about like day one.

Still quite tannin though very expressive. Expressive nose of pencil, mocha, smoke and game. Palate is quite fine and narrow, with a dark plummy character. Moderate leathery finish with a little funk. Still needs a little time to integrate the wood notes, but otherwise the fruit is showing some early maturity. Should be a good, not great Montrose that will start to drink well soon.

this is the 4th of a case bought en premier and the comments are listed represent an assessment over several hours. It started and stayed a leafy and tart and somewhat dilute tasting cabernet. Actually the depth and richness at the back with the palate cleansing lightness on the front make it refreshing and enjoyable quoif giving it a solid 87 but after more air and excellent food -in this case roasted cornish hen- definitely rounded and fleshed out to be in the 90+ range …. however , if you were lookng for the kind heft and gravitas that Montrose is known for you might feel jipped. I spent around $60 en premier for a case I will enjoy it as a wine for what it is but have not really found it to deliver the marquis qualities expected on the label or the $s spent + time in my cellar

(Decanter's Bordeaux '05, '09, '10 tasting) :: My wine of the event. It is all here! The bouquet just fills the glass and is revealing a complete panoply of flavours. Very sweet & ripe tannins, balanced with incredible earth, minerals and clay, forest, mushroom, lifted aromatic herbs, flowers, a hint of mint. Exceptional.

(Decanter's Bordeaux '05, '09, '10 tasting) :: Dense, tight, incredibly packed, but wonderfully complex across the spectrum of cassis, berries, earth and mineral tones. Nowhere near ready, but a beautifully complete wine in the waiting.

(Decanter's Bordeaux '05, '09, '10 tasting) :: Amazing complexity and balance, covering a wide spectrum of flavours, not least that St Estephe earth character. The tannins were not quite as sweet / ripe as the 2009, and there is a touch more bell pepper and leaf on the nose. A touch more savoury.

Earth, cedar wood, lead pencil, black licorice, cassis and blackberry open the nose. On the palate, the wine is polished, the tannins are soft, but the concentration and complexity found in the top vintages is not available. The wine is also shutting down and needs to be cellared, like any good vintage of Montrose for at least 8-10 years.
