Tasting, brief note. Black fruit with rich flavors. Moderate weight with good balance. A favorite today, this is one of the few reds today that I can see meriting 90+ points.

Ripe but still extremely balanced and well textured. Lemon and lime, but in a richer, honeyed, fun way. Very good now.

A lighter, fresher style of Pape Clement which should make fans of the estate that feel vintages like 2009 and 2010 were over the top, right at home. With smoke, licorice, espresso and black cherry aromas poking through, the wine is round, polished, fruity and forward.

I seem to have liked this wine more each year for the last 4-5yrs. This is now in prime drinking window, but will easily hold for 10+yrs. A gorgeous thick tobacco, truffle and sweet blackberry nose, some signs of slight fading, but plenty of dense fruit and tannin left. Acidity is discrete, but there - providing excellent balance. Heavy and hedonistic body, framed with the sense this has enjoyed lots of expensive oak, with with black fruit and dark cholocate taste and a lovely rich lingering plum and spice finish. Requires a 1hr double-decant now (from 375ml), after which it will open quickly in the glass. Note this would perform poorly in tastings or pop n pours... there's a funky smell that needs to blow off.

Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux San Francisco. Nose of dark fruit and a hint of cigar box, more of the same on the palate, medium body, tasty, tough and almost bitter on long finish due to tannins and shortage of fruit. $85-price makes it easy to pass.

This is classic Pessace-Legnan that the other reviews mistakenly note need for significant decant. The wine expression of the soil is wonderful with smooth fruit overtones. The is nose is more tannic but unlike California Cab not overpowering rich glue grape sweetness but a smooth grape with unique flavors. Yes you can leave this down for more years but it is drinking well.

Star of the whites (as, at the price, it should be)

Relatively softer style, balancing the crisp acidity with layers of complexity

With a lot of fatness to the character, due to the blend of 44% Sauvignon Blanc, 16% Sauvignon Gris, 37% Semillon and 3% Muscadelle, (Which is a lot of Sauvignon Gris), the wine opens with a floral, vanilla, orange rind and sweet, lemon curd aromatic display. The wine definitely has length and volume.

UGC Bordeaux Tasting - 2013 Vintage (Bentley Reserve, SF): Beautiful and creamier than the Smith Haut Lafitte. Grapefruit and grass plus celery soda and key lime pie. Slight impression of tannins - maybe from oak? Well-contained alcohol at 13.5%
18 months elevage in 60% new oak. They do lots of battonage - daily for the first week or so.

Extremely luxurious bouquet with dark forest fruits, cassis, graphite, cigar box and beautifully toasted oak. On the palate dark as well as red forest fruits, sweet spices, beautiful acidity and tannin and extremely well balanced. Extremely delicious and a mix between classical and modern style. A star of the vintage! Really great now and no problem cellaring this for another 5 – 7+ years.

UGC 2016 (Chicago, IL): This is another in a long string of anonymous high acid Bordeaux blancs from 2013. The only thing that makes this worse than the rest is the loud oak treatment, which is unfortunate, since this actually seems to have a bit more stuffing than most.

Delicious. Deep, ripe, mixed black cherry and plum; lots of tobacco, some mint, plenty of chocolate; silky textured. Smells a little bit like the desert on a rainy day. Blind, my wife guessed very high quality, mature Napa Cab. That sounds about right. At peak but not in danger of going over the hill. Yum.

Graves and Sauternes Dinner (RSJ, Southwark, London): Opaque ruby. Nose shows creamy blackcurrant, blueberry, vanilla - certainly "modern" but not OTT. Medium/full bodied, clean, plush, layers of pastilley black fruit, vanilla, cream, soft on mid-palate with moderate acidity, finish is marred by furry tannin which is concerning for ageability. ***?

Another Epic Dinner in Zurich w/CVA, Benoit, Andrew...adding Paolo (Moevenpick 20/20): First experience with this chateau, beautifully stored bottle purchased directly from the Chateau. Andrew brought this one, drank next to the 1961 Pape Clement

Incredible color, core was still bright garnet with some bricking at the edges. Would have guessed younger than the 61. Nose was more reticent by comparison, dried red fruits, herbs. Palate of old red fruits, lavender and smoke. Thin mouthfeel and medium/short finish.

Past its prime but still fun to drink...

Another Epic Dinner in Zurich w/CVA, Benoit, Andrew...adding Paolo (Moevenpick 20/20): First experience with this chateau, CVA shared this bottle, impeccable condition, well stored high fill. Drank next to the 1949 Pape Clement. Open for about 30 minutes prior to drinking.

Color was medium red/brick. Opaque and cloudy, would have guessed this was older than the 49 by appearance. The nose really jumps out, started as a earth tones, morphing into sweet red fruits, plums, burnt sugar and smoke. Elegant mouthfeel, plate of red fruits, dried black cherry, leather and spice. Well into its tertiary phase, the wine is nuanced and elegant.

Really special wine, beautifully aged, fully mature. Great experience to drink this especially against an equally well preserved 1949...
