1996 Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

A great example of an aged Bordeaux. Leather, cigar box, forest floor, slight pencil lead and earthy black fruit. The tannins are resolved but drinking very well after pop and pour. Excellent but not a blockbuster, as the nose wasn't as expressive and the finish a little clipped.

Broke open an OWC to sample for celebrating an major life accomplishment. Dark and inky with slight bricking. Splendid nose of creme de cassis, vanilla, dark fruits and suggestion of typical Pauillac earth. Palate is Medium to full bodied. Full in the mouth. Lots of dark fruit with oak influence but at this stage hard to dissect the fruit. Somewhat disjointed palate. Finish was long and slightly sweet (in a good way). Precise freshness. Firm tannins. Overall this wine is young and immature in areas but it will no doubt develop over the years and likely become the 100 point wine RP and company have claimed. For now, if you decant for a few hours it is fun to drink but if you only have 1 or 2 I would wait many years. Of note, we blind tasted this initially with the 2014 PC which was not really fair to the 14. There was NO question which was the 09. The 14 is far from approachable imo.

Drinking superb now. Seems to be on the cusp of going into more mature stage. Still lots of blackcurrant on the nose. Together with mocca, ripe plum, pretty big but not heavy meaning broad and giving off a lot on the nose but without being out of balance. On the mouth certainly in balance, very smooth, no hard tannins. Remember drinking this a few years back and the tannins were more noticeable than they are now. This is classic Bordeaux and pure Pauillac. Definitely a food wine. Drank with Cote de Boeuf and red wine sauce. Needless to say - worked perfectly. Great wine.

Medium purple color. Super classic notes of cedar wood, leather, cassis, tobacco, cigarbox, lead pencil, graphite, also some dark plum, smoke, there is also an element of savory herbs. It‘s medium+ bodied, with good mid-palate persistence and medium-high acidity, as well as medium+ tannin that is suprisingly ripe. Good length. A very good Pontet-Canet that is a clear outperformer in this vintage. Objectively, I would rate this 93, but it‘s providing even more joy drinking now.

As a historically fifth growth and the product of a somewhat questionable vintage the 2003 Pontet Canet meets and surpasses the highest of expectations.

First of all, the wine drinks very young, almost youthful. Yes, you can drink it now, but you can wait another 5 or even 10 years, and you won't be disappointed.

Secondly, this wine epitomizes power and ripeness paired with elegance. It just covers your mouth, gums and teeth with layers of silky, perfectly ripe, juicy, sappy, almost opulent fruit. Yet the wine retains moderate alcohol level as well as all the elegance in the world.
With 30 minutes in the decanter it opens up to a world of ripe blackcurrants, black cherries, moist earth, forest floor, graphite, lead pencil and even hints of bitter sweet black chocolate. There are pronounced notes of eucalyptus and mint as well.
The wine is meaty, yet drinks so beautifully, delivering freshness and opulence in almost an equal measure.
The final score of 95 points feels almost conservative but this one will surely get into the 97point zone within another 5 years.

We offered this the respect due and gave it five hours in the decanter ahead of Christmas dinner which was duly repaid.

Lots of black fruit and confected cherries on the nose from the get-go, with tobacco and spice emerging as time went on. Incredibly weighty on the palate but also very smooth with a medium finish. Somehow a little of this remained until Boxing Day and was still going strong with further emergence of spicy and earthy flavours. Good times.

This is clearly only just getting started and has a very long life ahead of it during which it will no doubt gain in complexity. My most recent point of comparison for this vintage was a bottle of Cos d'Estournel, just over the St Estephe-Pauillac border in close proximity to Pontet Canet and so for me is a helpful comparison. The Cos was also excellent but quite a bit more evolved than the PC and maybe a sign of things to come here.

This wine is big and rich, needs at least 4-5 hours in the decanter today to really show its potential. Should be a great wine in 5-10 years, but too young for my palate today. Based on this, i will not open my 2005 for a very long time.

All ‘03’s, double decanted and drank over 3 hours.

Pavie : lighter in body, ripe fruit, but a short finish. Disappointing compared to the other 2 wines. 91

Ducru Beaucaillou: ripe, forward, round, medium finish. 93

Pontet canet : darker profile, a touch of spice, longer finish. 93

Relatively short decant of 30 min. Still very young on the nose with balsamic notes. Moderate tannic structure but did note overpower the fruit. Probably needs about 3 to 5 years to really reach its potential.

Gave a lot of time to this Pontet Canet 2001. Nose is jammy black current, soft. Cut grass coming out almost dominant.
Grassy and earthy in mouth, disappointement comes from not enough fruit coming out. Feels like Cabernet not fully ripe going in!
Overall average claret, capped at this stage. In the end not enough fruit throughput it’s life.

8th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, more to it than March bottle, impressive weight of fruit, if without the nuance and grace of now slightly underpowered Barton 99 on same night, clearly more attractive than Malescot 99. F (17.5).

Tannins have mellowed out over the past 5 years. Now full ripe with good cassis, some truffles and pencil shavings. Still a good structure for this abnormal vintage. Does not reach the heights of 05 or 10 but still one of the top wines of the Vintage. I would drink it over the next decade.

Some early signs of age on the rim with a slight brown orange colour. Typical Pauillac aromas and flavours, good levels of acidity, medium bodied, medium finish.

A cracking wine that is entering its tertiary stages of life but I would expect to still be good and to further develop for at least another decade if in good condition.

Opened and double decanted in the morning, then left to slow-ox for the day AND most of next day (!). Despite this treatment, it was a little harsh although very enjoyable with tapas. The balance and length were excellent though, so in a few years this should be a truly terrific wine, 93-95.

Difficult to rate this one ... heaps of potential, but much too young at this stage.
She struts her stuff around well, but its not interesting enough to stay focused.
Needs more bottle time ( or decant for long time ), revisiting in next couple of years.

Good Pontet Canet. Beautiful purity of fruit with great balance. Acessible now with long decant but better off waiting longer as this is a bit tannic. Look forward to trying in the future.
