Drank at Enoteca Pinchiorri, Florence
Medium dense color; starting to lighten at the rim.
Funky nose and palate, bit of barnyard smell; all in a very positive way.
As the wine develops in the glass a myriad of flavors and perfumes rise to the nose and on the palate.
Truly multi-layered. Soft, yet endowed with a well integrated, firm tannin structure.
Certainly the most extraordinary wine of the night; something to behold.

Faded perhaps but the overall theme is still attractive. More dry earth and less spice than the nose once had. A flatter palate than a better vintage. No finish but reasonable front palate.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. This had been open several hours before I got to taste. Very good combination of earth, cooked mushroom, mature black fruit and brown spice. Very good depth and nuance. Holding beautifully.

Very light color - would have guessed a pinot noir based on color only. Very complex, spicy, intense fruit and offering a "sweet" sensation on the nose. Really nice.

Served without a decant. Great nose of sweet spice, red plum, earth and background black pepper. Still very vibrant. The palate has dried up somewhat with much less overt fruit.

Dark, brooding nose with a faint note of Syrah spice-box, even after a long decant there isn't a whole lot going on. Mature and nicely rounded on the palate, just... not a whole lot going on.

What's not to love? A blast of perfectly ripe kirsch, cherry liqueur, garrigue, spice and fennel on the nose. Pure silky cherries on the palate and a long, elegant, rich, fruit filled finish that stays with you. This tastes at least 10 years younger than its true age.

Feiner, reifer aber nicht überreifer, männlicher Rhone-Weine. In der Nase und Mund Metall, Jod, Leder. Wohl noch bis 2020 gut trinkbar.

It's fair to say that this wine is Burgundian based on it's mineral core, finesse, and depth. However, it also possesses the kirsch notes found in Grenache. It somehow reminds me of strawberry rhubarb pie as there is an interplay between contrasting flavors that pull something together to be more than a sum of the individual parts. This wine has an interplay of acid, mineral, and sweetness that works well. Tannin is still noticeable though not bothersome. This will go another 10 years easy and I'm glad I have more.

Nose displays the expected red cherry, sweet spice, and dusty nose. Remained alive after a couple of hours. Palate is somewhat dried out. Light red fruit, dry earth, and spice are there but not in full force. Well past its prime, drink now.

Immediately perfumed and ethereal. It smells of violets, lavender, aniseed, red fruits, meat and earth. The palate is so silky and whilst it is a powerful wine it is by no means heavy. With air it gets deeper and darker and there is a distinctive licorice note. It is one of those great wines that offers so much each time you stick your nose in the glass and the palate has power and poise.

My 2nd time with Rayas 1997.
Still very good in performance, Burgundy-like, clean, fresh very round and delicious with a deep impact aftertaste.

Rieslings, Rhones, Richebourg, and more at The Bristol (The Bristol, Chicago): Classic Rayas fragrance from the moment the cork was popped. Incredibly perfumed, bright red fruits, white pepper, and sweet floral elements augmented by more savoury earthy notes that emerge with air. As usual, there's the typical Rayas sense of finesse and grace on the palate, a lightness of touch and a long finish that's all bright red berries. Fantastic.

Salil does Chicago; 4/16/2015-4/19/2015 (Chicago, IL): This is a red-fruit scented wine, that shows very light and delicate floral aromatics coupled with a (very confusing) hint of white pepper that makes this almost syrah-like. The palate is similarly light and elegant, and showing almost no sign of fur, meat, or any other sort of funkiness. If more Chateauneuf were made like this, I'm pretty sure I'd be drinking it more often.

Entering a good zone of drinkability. Sweet nose with red plum, rose and other floral notes. Subtle but very fine palate with red cherry, flowers and a strong acid backbone. Went very well with lamb.

Bricking and color separation. 20 minutes in the decanter was all it took. Bright and sweet cherries, strawberries and raspberries that almost sear the palate and leave a 40 second indelible finish upon it. Some spice with sweet Oak and cedar and hints of dried herbs.

big and beautiful, this had great balance and mouthfeel -- smooth and slick but with acidity to create perfect balance, significant grenache fruit cherries and red berries, but with a healthy dollop of merdre / barnyard (including a touch of bitterness to balance some sweetness of the fruit)… really nice as usual for Pignan

Orange rim, very developed nose with barn, mushroom, leather and very ripe flowers, yet young and closed on palate. Mid body with mid+acidity. Drank over two days with extensive decanting, just starting to stretch out with fine tealeaf aftertaste that lingers like smoke in the back of throat for minutes. Very elegant wine with no sign of heat from 2003, but the nose and palate state different development paths so the holding period is somewhat unknown

Color: medium red
Nose: lovely classic Rayas but in extra dose!
Palate: power with light feet, stunner, long long finish, we drank this too fast, if you open this leave it in the glass for 2 hours and see it blossom

Color: light red
Nose: muted needs lots coaxing faint strawberry, after 2 hours classic Rayas, we were worried about this being an off bottle but it just needed time
Palate: medium bodied, upon opening not a representative bottle, short finish, very flat, we left this for 2 hours and it opened to transform from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan! Delicious, pretty complex, yummy

Raid L's Cellar - Pre Tasting Edition: Oak, herb, licorice, pear, apple, violet and stronefruit - just kept shifting and lifting with more time in the glass. Weighty and viscous on the palate, the richness and slightly tropical fruit definitely assert themselves but there is good acidity and a light Alsace styled bitterness on the backpalate that I really enjoyed. So much interest, the last sip was definitely the best.
