As the wine warmed out of its chilly pouring temperature, hints of weak coffee, caramel, honey, and pollen wafted out of the glass, each inserting a complex element over the primary scent of what I must describe as eucalyptus tea. That eucalyptus-tea note carried through as the first taste as my sip spread across my mouth and up through my sinuses. Orange marmalade and popsicle sticks resonated through the mid-palate, which faded to more subtle honey and toasted nut flavors. On the finish, orange blossom lingered along with something herbal, like sage. So complex and so pleasant. Easy to enjoy, yet difficult to understand. The most lasting impression was the sense of my place in time and the history of the bottle I get when drinking a bottle that must have been aging in barrels when Germany invaded France. A remarkable wine and a remarkable experience.

Dark brownish-amber in color, like polished walnut wood. An herbal, fresh nose with candied fruits. Tastes of butterscotch and orange rind with an acidic lift. Light to medium body.

I had it with excellent crèpes Suzettes after an extraordinary dinner with escargots and tournedos Rossini.

The cork was black down to half its length but no deterioration below that. Pulled up with an ordinary corkscrew without any problems.

Amber color. Nose of honey, marzipan and apricots. First sip. Extraordinary concentration and balance. Ten minutes pause. Second sip (my vanilla ice cream to the crepes was melting). New aromas coming through. Arctic cloudberries maybe. Almost total elegance despite its power and concentration. Best wine I ever had.

Only flaw: I could have wished for just a little more acidity, but in turn, that could have reduced its elegance. Difficult to know.

It is probably at its top now.

Just barely entering its drinking window. Intense, gripping nose of tropical fruit and honey. Lovely viscosity. A dazzlingly complex palate, almost too busy though I suspect the favors will harmonize over time. Lychee, honeyed mango, candied citrus, saffron, and piercing acidity. Very long finish. Less botrytis than other vintages I've had.

LostVerse brought this to Allreds 40th birthday dinner. What a treat. Just behind the 1975 Latour for my wine of the night (although most others liked this wine the best). Amber color (darker than the 1975 Fargures which we drank next to it). Tropical aromas which immediately caught your attention. Notes of apricots, mango and orange zest. Good spiciness from the botrytis. Long finish. Far superior to the 1977 which I had earlier this year (although the storage on the 1977 was poor). 95-96 points.

From 375 ml bottle. Dried apricot and baked apple. Moderate intensity and length, this isn't the most botrytis intensive Yquem, but charming and balanced from start to finish.

My 40th Birthday Dinner (Anvil Club, East Dundee): From 375ml, tasted alongside the 1975 de Fargues, courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. thelostverse. Deep golden color, very similar to the Fargues. Aromas of ripe white peach, apricots, orange blossom honey, pineapple and pear nectar with an underlying spice note. Amazingly rich and layered, but with terrific acidity this never feels heavy or cloying. Orange, pear, apricot syrup, grilled pineapple, marshmallow, fig and peach blossom flavors. Hints of spice again on the finish which lingers for over two minutes. Sublime. Thank you M/M TLV, I am truly humbled by your generosity.

Mostly Blind dinner - 88 Krug, 02 Boillot Monty, 02 Laurent CdB, 89 Palmer, 96 Yquem and etc. (Black Salt, Washington DC): This is a very pleasant surprise. Very intense and youthful nose displaying sweet yellow fruits, fresh apricot, banana, mango, papaya, custard and honey. Excellent concentration, unctuous yet airy and weightless, sweet banana/pineapple driven palate impression and lovely clean finish. This is very much sweet fruit driven D’Yuem rather than botrytis. Very opulent but not terribly complex. With D’Yquem, that can change with time. Very enjoyable already. I highly recommend as long as you don’t absolutely have to have botrytis.

Beautiful precise nose displaying yellow and red fruits, apricot, peach, red currants, pear tart, red tea, ginger, crème brulee, honey and spicy spices. Very polished and precise palate, sweet subtle red fruit driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and lovely clean finish. Not the biggest or most intense D’Yquem but very precise and perfectly balance. Really enjoyable once again and perfectly ready.

With a beautiful, yellow, copper, orange, gold hue, the nose screams with loud enough to taste it around the block, with its white peach, pineapple, caramel, creme brulee, apricot, honey, candied orange peel and tropical fruits. Rich, fat, dense and beyond luscious, the wine marries sweetness with blistering acidity, keeping everything lifted, with just the prefect amount of tension. The finish is pure, sweet, fresh and built to age for longer than most people reading this note. I've tasted this wine a lot over the years and this is the best showing yet for this majestic elixir. If you're young enough to wait, this is only going to get better and better with more time.

My first bottle of Yquem ... the cherry popped and partially pleased.
Agreed, nothing to compare against, but at this price maybe expecting too much.

This wine is very fine and well constructed, certainly found this in my glass.
Apricot, peach, nicely balanced sugar and some hint of acidity.
By far the best Sauternes ever tasted - but at 170 Euro / bottle too rich for me.

Drink now or keep much longer cellared ... should only get sweeter.

I should be embarrassed, having tasted this wine everyday for close to a week. But it's so good, I kept going back for more. And who could blame me? It is everything a great sweet wine should be. Blazing acidity, fat, rich, ripe and over ripe pineapples, apricots, peaches, nuts and honey that does not quit, with a fresh quality amidst its layers of unctuous, honey drenched fruit. Made from a blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, if you're a fan of sweet wines, this is clearly a glass of wine you need to taste and drink!

A nice Sauternes, but not a great d'Yquem. More interesting on the tropical, fruit filled nose, than on the palate, this will age well, but it's never going to deliver the fireworks many have come to expect from d'Yquem.

Half bottle. Medium gold color. Ripe burnt sugar, coconut aromatics. Ripe, round, unctuous, somewhat honeyed and sweet. Unquestionably tasty and immediately attractive, but I found the balancing acidity to be somewhat wanting. Big and concentrated, but this could use more definition and bite. Did not even come close to the balance of the '88 which we had last weekend.

Deep golden; wow rich, noble, caramel, butterscotch, apricot, honey, spicy botrytis and pineapple, I liked the bass to this which commanded your attention; deep and flavorful on the palate wide and deep still with great acid, honeyed and rich pastry though not yet getting into any nutty notes; really great stuff, potent too, the 1 oz pour was the perfect amount for the unbelievable piece of fois that went with it so amazingly, 97 point pairing.

Syrupy marmalade, clover honey, brioche and a unique creaminess. Complex with high pedigree. Drinking well now but still evolving as it breathed. Delicious with blue cheese.

Fresh apricot, honeysuckle, mango, creme brulee and honey. Undeniably a good wine but difficult to assess at this early stage. Almost too one-dimensionally sweet at this point. Will inevitably develop more depth of expression but until then falls short of being a great Yquem. This requires a good deal more patience.
