Cathy Corison's wines at Arlequin (Arlequin SF): Slightly dull medium-red in the glass, moderate plus concentration. Slight bricking at the rim.
On the nose, glossy-black sweet savory tobacco secondaries. Faint brett, faint stewed pyrazine, faint menthol, faint mushroom. Beautiful mature cabernet nose.
On the palate, classic Corison:
Medium body, medium alcohol [13.5%], excellent midpalate of sweet cedar and sweet tobacco. Elevated acid and still-grippy moderate tannins. Long finish.
Score: Between 9 and 9.5

Cathy Corison's wines at Arlequin (Arlequin SF): A tough year - half the crop of ’05. Light acetaldehyde on the nose. Mushroom tones. Slightly stewed fruit with faint sweet stewed bellpeppers.
On the palate, classic Corison:
Medium body, medium alcohol [also 13.6%], excellent midpalate aromatics with sweet tobacco tertiary character, a hint of Brett spice, and light tones fresh wood (smells like smooth, fine-grained freshly-sanded wood to me) [French oak, 50% new]. Elevated acid and plush moderate-intensity tannins. Long finish.

Cathy Corison's wines at Arlequin (Arlequin SF): Medium red, moderate plus concentration. The nose shows signs of age: Some dark fruits, but mostly sweet stewed tamales, hint of savory stewed ripe bell pepper character. Sweet tobacco, slightly oxidative in nature.
In the mouth, classic Corison:
Medium body, medium alcohol [also 13.6%], excellent savory sweet-tobacco and cedar midpalate aromatics with a hint of Brett and some dusty wood spice (smells like faint fine-grained freshly-sanded wood to me) [French oak, 50% new]. Elevated acid and plush moderate-intensity tannins. Reminiscent of a the ’95 York Creek, but softer, plusher, slightly more youthful, and less pastiche - this is elegant and developing beautifully. Long finish.

Cathy Corison's wines at Arlequin (Arlequin SF): Dark ruby in the glass. On the nose, overripe cherry with faint brett spice.
In the mouth, classic Corison:
Medium body, medium alcohol [also 13.6%], excellent midpalate aromatics with a hint of Brett and well-contained tones of fresh wood (smells like smooth, fine-grained freshly-sanded wood to me) [French oak, 50% new]. Balanced acid (moderate - not as elevated as the others) and plush moderate-intensity tannins. Long finish.
A cool year - they picked a month later than usual.

Cathy Corison's wines at Arlequin (Arlequin SF): dark ruby, concentrated color.
Nose of slightly overripe red cherry liqueur and a bit of blackcurrant character. Secondaries of faint animal spice (brettanomyces), deep glossy liquorice / anise, and cedar tones.
In the mouth, classic Corison:
Medium body, medium alcohol [13.6%], excellent midpalate aromatics with a hint of Brett and well-contained tones of fresh wood (smells like smooth, fine-grained freshly-sanded wood to me) [French oak, 50% new]. Elevated acid and plush moderate-intensity tannins. Long finish

Cathy Corison's wines at Arlequin (Arlequin SF): Clear, bright, medium ruby with moderate plus concentration, and no rim variation. No gas or sediment.
Moderate intensity nose, clean, with tones of savory-sweet ripe stewed bell peppers (pyrazines). Some integrated cedar and bright red cherry. Overall character of the nose is savory.
In the mouth, classic Corison:
Medium body, moderate alcohol [13.7%].
Red cherry, a tiny bit of cassis character, cedar. For me, a bit of well-integrated oak, partly new - it registers as smooth, fine-grained, freshly-sanded wood. [50% new, French oak] Elevated acidity. Tannins are a solid moderate. Long finish
This was a difficult year to ripen cabernet - many vineyards were afflicted with Aspergillus mold.
I really like this.

Coravin taste. My first Corison. On the nose, this has nice red and black fruits, forest floor, and menthol. Lovely nose. On the palate, nice red fruit (but restrained), medium weight, lovely acidity, very nice balance, no heat at all. Tannins are there and a touch grippy, but this was much more approachable than I expected based on the CT drinking window (2024-2060). Very well made and an elegant, feminine style of Cab that I really like a lot. Clearly, I need to be acquiring more from this producer. This should be friendly with a variety of foods. I'm sure it will get better with time.

Deep, rich plum fruit and wonderful balance. This was ready to go right out of the bottle and kept improving all night. One of the best Napa cabs I've ever had.

A pronounced perfume of black cherries, kirsch, and ripe fruit. I can describe in a way that does it justice - it smells like great Cabernet. Cola, herb, mint thing (from half bottle, just off the cork pull). Pure and lean mid-palate, great elegance, finesse and balance. Singing acidity on the back of the palate. One for the long haul.

A well crafted cabernet with new world fruit and old world structure. Still young with aromas of fresh blackberry jam, eucalyptus and pencil shavings. A complex mouthfeel that reveals layers of black cherry, dark chocolate and wet slate. Plenty of acidity keeps this lively on the 30 second mineral driven finish. Will continue to develop for another 15-20 years.

Pop and pour at a restaurant (Villa Deveena) off a dirt road in Costa Rica. Starts of floral with a transition to tar, leather, plum and finishes with red fruit. With time in the bottle it faded a little so I would drink up.

1989 Corison Cabernet Sauvignon

5/13/2015 - William Kelley Likes this wine: NR

Cathy Corison's 1989 Cabernet Sauvignon is drinking beautifully from magnum right now, with a very pure bouquet of black raspberry, dusty coco-like soil tones and an attractive framing of new oak and cedar. On the palate the wine is juicy, open-knit and supremely drinkable: the tannins have largely melted away, but everything remains vibrant and lively. Supremely drinkable wine.

Some nice wines over the last two nights; 5/13/2015-5/14/2015: I seemed to like this more than the group, but I love Gewurz. Great nose of lychees. Very forward. I am again surprised on the ripeness in 2011 this wine achieved. Clearly not old world with more fruit than acidity. No bitterness that sometimes plagues this grape either. Refreshing, fruity. A great starter for the evening.

Tannins and acids resolved making this a very nice wine. Drinking very well right now - not sure how much better this will be. Layers of red and blue fruit, cassis, bramble, leather, cigar, tobacco, finishing with just the slightest touch of oak. Texture is gorgeous and velvety. Love where this wine is, particularly from a maligned vintage. Drink up.

5/2/2015 - William Kelley wrote: NR

Out of magnum the 1993 Corison is aging very gracefully indeed, bursting from the glass with a fragrant bouquet of red and black cherry and chocolately, loamy soil tones. On the palate the wine is vibrant, sappy and ripe at the core, leading with juicy fruit that still takes center stage, and which points to this very classically balanced and Bordeaux-styled wine's Napa origins. Lovely.

Had with lamb. We like Corison because the wine goes well with food (no overpowering fruit or to much alcohol). This bottle had enough tannin to go a few more years, but it was excellent today. We put the wine in a decanter for about an hour, I would suggest another hour as it definitely opened up more as time went on.
