2008 Domaine Ponsot Clos Vougeot

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

One of the darker 2008s I've seen. This has an extremely pungent and powerful nose, with a great balance between ripe fruit (think sweet black cherries) and a lot of mulchy, earthy, mushroomy funk. The palate is just as dense and powerful as the nose -- a real sledgehammer of a wine, but the high acidity allows it to maintain some real elegance as well. This is on the verge of developing some umami character. Perhaps one of the best Clos Vougeots I've had in a while. This doesn't show very much 2008 character at all -- there's none of that bright high-toned transparent and crystalline red fruit. The tannins are somewhat coarse, but they'll come around with time. I'd never be able to peg this as a 2008 blind. But it's sure as hell phenomenally good.

Lovely nose of cooler fruit, some spice and little to no green (unlike some of my previous bottles) . Lovely spice, cooler and deep moss- herbal notes. A little basil to it that I have not gotten in previous bottles, and distinct from the pyrazines of a couple of previous ones. Quite good and long. This gives me hope for the remaining bottles.

Attractive nose features autumn leaves, black tea, stewed fruit & hoisin sauce. Dense, sweet, earthy and moderately spicy, somewhat hollow mid palate and a shortish finish. A delightfully mature village wine which is unlikely to improve.

Loved the weight and spicy red fruit flavors. Terrific length and depth. Only knock the bracing acidity at times almost seeming almost like ALC heat. A little stern acidity takes this down a small notch. Very enjoyable none the less.

Lovely color. The nose is pure and classy, showing cherry, raspberry, minerals and a hint of flowers. This is medium bodied on the palate, with very good concentration and a wonderful silky finesse. The medium plus length finish shows refined tannins and vibrant acidity.

A little mint, leather, brambly fruit. On the rustic side with slightly gritty tannin that serves the fruit well.

I had always wanted to try a Ponsot, so I forked out and got a couple. The Griotte, from another producer, was the very first bottle of Burgundy I had which blew me away (a lot don't). Iron, stone and cherry on the nose. More of the same in the mouth. Medium bodied, long finish. Very delineated with pure fruit. This has got many years to go. Worth it.

SLDS Christmas with Gavin: Grape, green apple, lemon and some spice. Acid is at the fore of the palate, there is only medium depth to the fruit. Does have some interest overall though I wish the depth was a touch better.

(Decanted two hours.) It has been nearly two years since I drank this wine. It still has an amazingly dark red/blue color that looks more like cabernet than pinot noir. With much coaxing, it delivers up rich aromas of dark berries, strawberries, mocha, funk and menthol. There is also a floral note that is very pleasing and adds another layer of complexity and interest. Full-bodied, it has a rich and ripe mouthfeel but without a trace of sweetness. Big flavors of cherry, strawberry, dark chocolate, fresh beef, mint, minerals and moist soil are beautifully delineated by a tangy spine of uplifting acidity. There is impressive persistence and freshness here. And though fine, the tannins remain formidable. This is still a very young wine. However, the quality and balance of its core elements suggests a vivacious, long-lived wine awaits the patient. 96 points.

A higher score and a better bottle than my March experience. A nicely balanced nose of red plum, sweet spice and black raspberry. This bottle took slightly longer to unfurl but had stronger intensity. The palate also brings forest floor, and in this bottle a background smokiness.

Birthday Dinner (2) 2014 (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria, Singapore): I have been disappointed by Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche more than once, with the wines either being too young, or shut down, or just underperforming. I have actually had this particular wine before, and thought it was good, but not great. It was really on song tonight though. It had a beautiful nose, with funky shades of boiled herbs and damp earth underneath gorgeous wafts of wild cherries and berries, and then a twist of orange peel and a nice trail of Morey spice drifting along behind. With time, a shades of herby Vermouth and sarsarapilla root aromas came out as well. Lovely. It was on the palate were the wine really impressed though. Soft, velvety tannins and bright, juicy acidity made for a really open mouthfeel. It more or less melted over the palate with beautifully pure flavours of maraschino cherries and raspberries flecked with lots of complex little nuances, showing sweet herbs, spice and bramble laced through the midpalate. There was a thick depth here, but this was also a wonderfully transparent expression, so different from the whole series of grumpy Ponsots that I have had in recent times. Nice long finish too, mellow, gentle, but deep and persistent, unfolding beautifully across the backpalate in lovely notes of dark cherries and berries, earth and herb, and a gentle spiciness twisted around a core of fresh acidity and fine tannins. This was lovely, a complete wine that was drinking wonderfully. With the depth it had and that firm structural backbone, it can probably go on for quite some time yet as well.

Classic Ponsot CdlR red and dark fruit, but with less sweet spice than other top vintages. Tannins have been well integrated at this point presenting a very smooth drinking experience. Quite refined although more focused on the fruit than on spice and secondary earthy notes than my favorite vintages.

No contest, my wine of the night. Certainly the best bottle of this that I have had. Deserving of comparisons to some of the other great 78s. Tingly spice jumps off the nose along with distinct cola aromas. Black plum, black cherry, bitterweet chocolate, and light dry earth. Background lavender and violet with air time. Elegant and engaging on the palate with alternating sweet and savory spice notes. Extremely long and evolving finish. 97+.

I rated this higher than many of my companions this evening. While not as vibrant as the 80, this offered a pleasurable and very approachable drinking experience. Graciously offered up the desired triumvirate of dark and red fruit, sweet spice and earthy notes. This will not have the longevity of the the 80.
