Ultimo lunch time tasting (Ultimo wine centre (but now vintage cellars)): Perhaps from a more modern style producer with medium plus intensity aromas of cream vanilla, spice over plum tending to prune with very slight tar notes. In the mouth the wine is juicy with tough, drying tannins, slight plummy fruit with touches of red cherry and spice. Hmm.

A nice Dolcetto, with cherry and wet earth notes on the nose. Nice acidity, with cherry, leather, and spice on the palate, with a touch of sweetness. Delicious!

Ett kraftfullt och parfymerat vin med mörka körsbär, rosor, viol, lakrits, tjära och apelsinskal. Fortfarande ett väldigt ungt vin som behöver ett antal år till i källaren. Detta vin har redan allt som behövs för att bli ett magiskt vin när det börjar få lite mognadstoner.

PnP slightly chilled. Has put on some weight since the last time I tasted it. Also feels more balanced and just more interesting than last time. Pretty notes of sweet red berries (strawberries, red cherries), some spices, flowers and some menthol. It's medium bodied and very fresh, with medium+ acidity and medium- tannin. Medium+ length. This is probably not gonna make old bones but it's a very pretty Nebbiolo to drink now and over the next 3 - 5 years while waiting for the Barolos...

Beautiful bouquet with red and dark forest fruits, sweet spices and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate beautiful dark and red forest fruits as well, plums, earth and some autumn impressions. Beautiful acidity and good, round but powerful tannin.. Full bodied and a good length. A very fine wine with finesse and good complexity. Early maturity and lovely already. Will reach maturity around 2020 and might be even more complex by then. 92+ for tonight.

Colore impeccabile e profondo; naso ricco, dolce, bel frutto rosso, sentori di pasticceria, focaccine alla cannella, cioccolato al latte, spezie dolci, mentuccia fresca.
Bocca fruttata e dalla bella acidità, tannini fini e dal tocco lieve. Finale disteso, appagante.
Barbera eccellente, punto di maturazione ottimale, bevibilità assassina, bottiglia scolata in un lampo. Sorso spontaneo ed incalzante con polpettine di carne, aglio ed erbette, accompagnate da patatine novelle al forno.
Prezzo da prodotto di punta (20 euro), meritato.

Decanted for several hours. Lovely bright ruby, with a nose of red fruits, spices, flowers. Lovely medium to full body on the palate, with a long finish. Great balance with fruit, acidity and tannin, but it needs the decanting time. Perfect in two years.

Medium, purple appearance. Quite dark nose of liqorice, toast, violets and characteristic truffle. Lovely but still tight fruit attack, spice in the mid-palate, painfully (in a good way) long finish. Redundant comment of the year in me saying this is too young but I had a little umm and ahh regarding how it would last as the fruit feels a little light. On reflection, I think this will be spectacular in another 10yrs and am looking to source a half case.

Mörka körsbär, lakrits , tjära, apelsinskal, aceton, läder, rosor, skogsmark och aceton. Bra grepp i tanninerna men balanseras upp bra av frukten och syran. Otroligt lång och fin eftersmak med alla de ingredienser man vill ha i ett kvalitetsvin från Piemonte. Ett väldigt komplext vin.

We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting.
Very deep and fine nose!
Clean with deep & dark cherry notes, fine pine needles, orange peels, roses, leather, tar, licorice, herbs and fine acetone.
Very complex and intriguing.
Palate is equally fine, on the more and smooth feminine side of Monforte, with fruity cherries, ripe raspberries, terroir driven, clean, with fine acidity and balance.
Great length and complexity.
A truly superb Barolo.

Recording this note late, but I agree w/ Drankard in that this was confectionary and not my favorite nebbiolo. Quite floral on the nose, which I usually look for and like, but it was like a "fake", perfumed floral. Red fruits, good acidity, medium body and length, but pretty simple stuff. Honestly wasn't sure what decanting would do here, so I tried it, and it really only minimally improved. I poured the rest into a half bottle and left it out uncorked for the night and tried it again the next evening. It was actually better, as the candied element had softened, and it overall seemed more smooth and balanced. I left about a glass left in the bottle and left out another night, just to see, and it was kinda dead the next day, in that it tasted bordering on spoiled with lower fruit and firm tannins. It would seem that we did find, and pass, this wine's sweet spot at this point in time (for us).

Grasso Barolo 1999 vs Vietti Barbera d'Asti 2004
- Farbe: Der Barbera ist dunkler und dichter, lässt schon auf den modernen Ausbau im Barrique schließen
- Bouquet: Grasso zeigt schon etwas den reifen Geruch und die Säure der Kirsche, Vietti riecht deutlich weniger
- Grasso ist starker Säure, mal sehen ob das nach dem Dekantieren sich noch verändert; typischer Unterschied zwischen Kirsche und Brombeere - der Vietti ist einfach ein Stückchen fruchtiger
- Mir gefällt der Grasso besser, auch wenn er anstrengender zu Trinken ist

Complex and fairly open on the nose with real depth. Sweet, ripe fruit, herbs, earth, leather, tar. Also on the palate this is a lot more approachable than the 2011s with a silky, soft texture and immense length. Very elegant and lingering - superb! 94-95+

More red fruit on the nose than the Casa Mate, floral, less tar notes. Softer and a bit more open on the palate as well, still restrained and tight with good grip. Nice length. 92-93+
