HDH Auction - smoky dark nose, lots of black cherry. Still tastes quite young. Lots of tannins on the finish. I think this has upside with more time in the bottle.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Bottle 01934. Lovely florals on the nose. Red fruited and aromatic on both the nose and palate. Perhaps a bit austere but that can't be too surprising given the vintage. Coarser tannins and very high acidity, but I think given air this will ease up quite a bit.

HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): Beautiful color and aromas of rose petals, soot, & cranberries. Palate was very tart, but with air it opened up a bit. I'd like to think it will just take some time to flesh out a bit.

sulfites are dominant on the nose and palate day 1. Medium acidity and tannin. Slightly thin and hollow texture. Some nice spice. This hasn't met my expectations. Day two (hopefully improved) to come. Improved slightly day two. Sulfites disappear and some fruit emerges. Solid but not exciting.

Not nearly as expressive as the bottle I drank in Burgundy. Had a great nose with notes of charcoal. The palate was tight and unyielding. Some pleasure but not as much as I hoped for.

Started disjointed but came together strong. Very plush dark pinot fruit. Opulent and expressive nose of flower, violet, dark cherry and orange peel. Sizable for appellation. I thought too large at first, however this developed a strong and unexpected transparency.

Cherry and red berry this village lady is class as she entices with her elegance. She carries a bouquet of posies – violets, cyclamen, and rose mallow and her medium body, beautifully balanced, classic and cool structure makes her a simple yet spicy pleasure to enjoy.

Definitely decant...really benefited from air. First glass of the bottle was still very closed and tight...decanted the rest and 30 minutes later the wine blossomed into a pretty but still very structured Volnay. Serious stuff.

Pulled from a store shelf where it had been sitting for who knows how long, this seemed like it could have shown better. A solid wine, with coffee, orange, mineral accents, but a bit dull on the palate.

Beautiful balance. Lovely nose: truffles and mushrooms. Mid-palate was fuller than I expected, and a fine, evolving, long finish.

better than my last bottle, nicely balance with good acid, a touch of tannin which gave it a nice mouthfeel and a nice addition to the finish, some fruit lurking to pair with the structure and spice, nice example and i think could improve a bit, nosed out the Bell Clone 6 Cab from 2005

Requiring at least an hour in the glass in order to fully strut its stuff, this medium red/garnet wine serves up aromas and flavors of Bing cherries, raspberries, baking spices and loamy earth. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic and with well-integrated alcohol (listed as 13.8%), it wraps its flavors with silky tannins and stays solid in the middle. Medium-to-long and tart on the back end, this wine has the fruit and structure to ensure several more years of enjoyment. Drink now-2022.

Stunning! This wine definitely needs a long decant - 4 hours would suit this right now. At first an overwhelming cherry bomb on the palate that settles down after time. Developed some hints of spice and fruit toned back after several hours. Great stuff that still has at least 8 - 10 years ahead of it.

Nice ruby on pour. Open on the nose, ripe raspberry fruit and nice soil and spice notes. Fully developed on the palate, maybe lacking a touch of fresh acidity but very decent for the price. Good balanced Pinot fruit and satisfying finish. Thanks JB!

My first experience with this wine. Compared with the other Volnays that night, it came across as much more candied and new world. I wonder if there was a storage issue or whether this was a representative showing.

This is really pretty tonight and in a really good place. Well balanced with penetrating red fruit, earth, sous bois, perhaps some floral notes, firm minerality at its core and a long satisfying finish. While this has a softer mouthfeel, there's underlying sauvage characteristics that make this hard to call feminine. All in all, an excellent Volnay that's drinking beautifully with a couple of hours of double decanting.

(Decanted for two hours.) This wine has a beautifully deep ruby color with an almost magenta center. The nose is simply beautiful: red and black fruits, spring flowers, cassis, and savory/earthy aromas. In the mouth it is medium-bodied with concentrated cherry and plum, uncooked meat and dried thyme flavors carried along on nervy acidity. Also, there is a mouthwatering streak of minerals (crushed rock, flint, rock salt?) that is difficult to describe but impossible to miss. The complexity and length of these flavors is compelling. The tannins are still substantial but refined. A study in power and finesse, another decade is needed before it reaches its glorious, stupidly good potential. Lastly, it is a relative bargain for this level of quality. 95+ points.

This amazing wine starts with a fine medium ruby color. The nose is an expressive and elegant mixture of candied red fruit, wood smoke, violets and vanilla. Cherry, strawberry and traces of anise coat the palate and the intensity of these flavors is impressive. A vein of fresh acidity lifts everything from start to finish and fine-grained tannins provide a bit of backbone and grip. The finish is long, cool and airy and leaves a floral fragrance in the mouth. This is a very lovely wine with real vitality, elegance and class. Though not nearly ready, it should be stunning in about eight years.
