2004 Long Shadows Wineries Merlot Pedestal

Rich deep purple color. Really coming into its maturity, with fully smoothed tannins, nicely balanced structure, still showcasing rich currant and dark cherry aromas with leather, tobacco and faint cocoa notes. Best Washington merlot-predominant blend I've tasted. Delighted to have a couple of bottles left to try in 3-4 years.

Juicy purple color. Smells dark and concentrated, with plums, violets and dark chocolate shavings. Big and full on the palate with structured but chewy tannins, some moderate acidity helps tame the huge structure. The plum sauce, currant paste and black cherry fruit is jammy but velvety, and topped with some violets and earthy flavors. This wine is jam packed with vanilla, charred oak and toasted nuts. It’s heavy for my palate, but it’s still a very nice wine, perhaps one that could use a few years in the cellar. High-alcohol, oak-lovers, check out this wine, which was made with the consultation of Michel Rolland. Includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged almost two years in mostly new oak.

Go West! Tasting (The QEII Centre, Westminster, London): Big ripe fruit bomb but with depth and spicy texture, nice ripe fruit that follow in the palate, alcohol heat (15.20%), fruit in alcohol, blueberry, ripe red cherry, black cherry, nice texture, nice ripe juicy tannins, long finish

Go West! Tasting (The QEII Centre, Westminster, London): A bit numb in the nose, off-dry, citrus, stalky, med body and finish, easygoing.
ps seeing all the other comments, I think I got an off bottle

Two hour decant. This wine was silky smooth with great balance. Like a refined whole wheat toast with black cherry jam & secret spices. Nice drinking window. Not heavy or dark, but yet full bodied. Could have passed as a really nice 10 to 15 year old bordeaux. I am still convinced that these folks are making the best merlot in the U.S.

Smooth, nicely polished, fairly bold merlot. Plenty of ripe plummy blackcurrant fruit. Palate drinks easily for how big it is thanks to a high acidity level. Finishes long and clean.

Blind tasting, my contribution. Past bottles have not shown the ripeness as overtly as this one, and the higher alcohol's evident. Not in a great place right now--wait until 2017 for next bottle.

Striking aromatics of Deep Purple pencil lead and violets, with a hit of anise. This carries over into and coats my mouth with a complimentary acid streak. Very glad to have more.

A big wine, but one that sheds some of its prodigious fruit and oak with air. After ~3 hours of slow ox this is still modern, but shows much more BDX-like and moderate weight. Nose of dried cherry, licorice, melted dark chocolate and herbs. Loads of herb, earth and spice start to unfold on the palate. I'm pretty impressed/surprised that this improved so much with air. All that said, it still shows some heat and a bit of oaky vanilla bean on the back end. Started mid-80s and ends as a solid 90.

This is a phenomenal pinot gris, even after a little more bottle age than would be recommended. For the price this is silly good. Best gris I've had from Washington in a while. Aromas of melon and strawberry, palate brings kiwi, racy acidity and a just silly smooth finish, with an echo of that vibrant acidity. Great.

PnP. Decent nose of cherry, currant and a little earthiness.
Well balanced wine with a good backbone, and decent acidity. I wouldn't call it silky, but very balanced.
Dark fruit, cassis and a hint of spice. Medium finish But there are not any secondary flavors yet. They seem like they want to emerge but are just out of reach at the moment. Let these sit for a year or two and this wine should really become wonderfully complex.

Can use a little air, but drinkable and ready now. A mouthful of fruit, a bit on the hot side (as it should be from Washington), enough tannins to balance and give it structure. I'm sure you can hold it for 5+ years, but it's nearing its prime.

Inky dark purple, black berries and iodine. Dry, tart blue and black fruit, bold fruit and body with bold and chewy tannins. Blue berries with some iodine, roast beef, not quite ripe Himalayan blackberries with substantial stemmy tannins and a bit of bitter. Plenty of time for aging left.

This bottle showed distinct nose of petrol and apple. The wine seemed a little tired and not fresh. Maybe at a point in it's development that it is a little awkward? Or could it be it is beyond it's peak?

2 years from previous review, and a 3 point downgrade. Still amazing, but more mellow now, without the endless depth. Still amazing though...I like it a lot. Was traveling, so sort of like a road game, things didn't click as easily as at home with my own glassware, etc. Kudos though to Sebastian at Citrella in Half Moon Bay CA for taking good care of me and mine.

Sipped over three evenings. Night one it was very good; oddly it was on the downward slide already the following nights. To reiterate 2014's comment: this is one of the lesser LSP offerings.
I feel the Pedestal has priced itself out of the game. For $40 or less this would be a fair buy .. .but in the $50's ... there's equal merlot out there for half the tariff.

CellarTrack indicates this wine is at about the end of its expected life. I have opened two bottles recently and both were in great condition and the wine was very enjoyable. It has a good balance of deep, rich mature fruit and tannins. I expect this wine will keep several more years but it is very nice right now.
