2011 Merryvale Chardonnay Starmont

Napa Valley more

The deep amber color and the floral aroma are the best things about this Chardonnay. On the palate I tasted citrus, apricot with a hint of oak with a fuller than average medium body. However the finish was somewhat lacking with a mild bitter aftertaste.

Opened and let air in the fridge an hour before drinking with a dinner of seared pork chops, grilled red potatoes, and steamed broccoli. Deep, dark, sappy Crimson color. Nose brings cherry cobbler baking spices, tart raspberries, wild herbs, raspberry menthol, and plenty of vanilla wafer cookies. The palate is full, extracted, hot, and wobbly, bringing waves of rich blackberries, chocolate cherries, tangy raspberries, old musty leather, nutmeg, and sweet baking spices. The finish is slightly hot yet resolved with a nice integration of tannins and acidity, and it lingers for 30+ seconds. Still, like a lot of Napa wines from the mid-2000's, the sum of the parts outweighs the whole. I prefer a classic music album over a hit single any day. Drink over the next few years.

- Crimsom color and aromas of dusty and cloves. It's overly acidic and has flavours of dusty and cloves with a medium/full body. Polished texture with a medium finish - Bad cork, but wine was great

Clear, garnet color with the slightest suggestion of bricking around the edges. Definite black fruit aroma on the nose accompanied by vanilla/oaky bouquet. Currant fruit on the tip of the tongue, but no real secondary flavors. Very much resolved tanning and acid. As I had subsequent tastes with my meal (lamb chops with a Late Harvest Zinfandel/Mint sauce) the flavors of the wine seemed to move more towards a candied fruit profile. Clearly, this wine plateaued some years ago.

Very light and fruity upon opening. Decanted for 30 minutes and was a wonderful balanced wine.
There is no sediment in the bottle. The body is medium/full. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Tight and green ~5 yrs ago. This one was much more enjoyable. Body still there, just a hint of brown in the glass. Hint of barnyard on the nose but otherwise classic Cab fruits on the nose and palette. Soft tannins - enjoyable finish. First glass or so the next day was good but then started falling apart.

Is Little Richard in the house? Good golly miss Miss Molly!

As dark a wine as you will see. Black with dark cherry at the edge.

Blackberries, ripe currants, leather, some mint with black pepper and green peppercorns in the background. Think of Munch's painting "The Scream"...this wine is in agony for a steak.

Thrilling concentration of dark-berried fruit and plum, sweet and granular tannins, a little tree root for grip. The finish has both astringency (think lemon peel in an espresso) and length. The depth and concentration of this wine make it elite.

As a side note, I overbought 1999 Cabs in general (newly built cellar and determined to fill it - yes, a bit of a rookie mistake). I have found most to be overripe for my palate and, in general, a bit disappointing in that they ar mostly one dimensional. While this example does not deliver layers of nuance it delights because its core (concentration and purity of fruit with great balance) is as good as it gets. 100% Napa terror. Just Outstanding!

Lovely Californian Chardonnay. Well oaked. Not too much, but enough to add pleasant, smooth notes of vanilla, caramel and old butter. Exotic fruit, citrus and some pineapple. Drinks well on day two as well.

Over the hill? Yes. But not in the gutter. Yet. This one certainly will be by 2020. But it' snot a 2004-2009 drink date kind of wine either. If you have this one, you probably need to start drinking it. If you have multiple bottles, you definitely need to start drinking it. From the nose to the front of the palate, this is grandma's cedar chest on the nose. Front of this wine initially was a little rough, but settled to a nice delicate blackberry on a medium to full bodied wine. The mid-palate was a little bit of spice, a little bit of dark chocolate, and age. The finish is not complex, tiny bit of spice, fine tannin on the finish. I can imagine that this one was a full bodied force to reckon with about 5 years ago. This is "Adam's Family Reserve' wine at its finest, as the "cobweb" note is actually pretty different than what I've been used to before. Good wine!

There has been some change since I last had this about 2 years ago. It still explodes with cherry, leather and tobacco, but the strawberry is gone. The balance is now about perfect with light acidity and tannins very light. It finishes very long and smooth.
