It smells like blackberry, flint, sherry, stoniness, alcohol/hot, mineral and hay/straw. It tastes like flint, sherry and stoniness. too much tannins (many tannins?), bitter, chalky, acidic – really disappointed as it was pricey for my budget. I like a jammier, less tannic, more full Cabernet.

Excellent chardonnay. Well balanced. Nice acidity to balance the oak, very little if any malolactic fermentation. I prefer the fruit over buttered popcorn soccer mom juice.

Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Very deep, opaque garnet. Closed-in nose, with hints of plum, black pepper, chocolate, sweet oak. Rich, full, and smooth on the palate, as strong black fruit flavors join spicy tones. The style is pure Lodi, which means extracted, dark, and full, but with a certain deliciousness. The finish is drying, with low tannins and coffee notes. Thoroughly pleasant on the heavy end of the scale.

Very complex Zin....immediate hit on palate of fruit and then the smooth spice kicks in.....should be good to pair with food, but stand alone very well as a sipping wine in the evenings.

Typical Lodi fruit... dark, full bodied with blackberries, blueberries, bing cherries, with hints of oak and spice. Decent QPR that can be had now or hold for 2 more years or so.

Interesting grape. Light fruity, not much structure. Pairing it with pasta for dinner. Drink now-2016.

Unmistakably Petite Sirah: Very dark, opaque garnet. Nice nose of cherries, black pepper, coffee, and even a bit of mint. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, not tart or lifted. Coffee and black cherry flavors. The finish is tannic, with mouth-coating velvety feel. Overall it's a solid product.

Very light for a cab and somewhat grapey Does have a hint of pepper on the back end. Like it but am concerned it will hold up against a great steak.

This will be an Aristotelian review. Very deep opaque garnet. Nice nose of coffee, blackberries, blueberries, vanilla, black pepper. Full-bodied and somewhat soft on the palate, though not overly soft. Fruit flavors lead, which is a good thing and lightens the proceedings. Finishes quickly with short grip and near-zero tannins. Most wine writers do Aristotelian reviews, but they just won't tell you they're doing it because that would require that they state their priorities up front. Few, unfortunately, ever do this. Here goes: As a Lodi Zin, this gets the number above, which is excellent.

Very deep near black purple color, violet nose with spice (nutmeg) on nose and rich smooth palate of blue/black fruit (blackberry, candied violets) with a flavor profile approaching vintage port with its brandy flavored black fruit flavors. Med+ finish.

Deep garnet in color. Oak, some vanilla and blackberries on the nose. The palate is light on the acid with fig, oak and more berries flavor. Big at nearly 15%, we are split down the middle on this wine - like it at times and others, meh.

Lots of oak to cover up the unimpressiveness of the fruit. Not an enjoyable wine. Did not care to finish it. Very one-dimensional.

Drank 8/7/2014 Flavorful wine with depth and complexity. Just the right amount of fruit. Tannins prevalent but not obtrusively so. Medium-plus body with a full mouthfeel and lingering finish. Spicy cherry and black currant with a depth similar to Cabernets.

A robust but decent red wine that uses mostly vanilla smoky oak for flavor. Slight rs in the background. Not particularly varietal but with the oak level who would know, anyway what fruit that is there is very ripe with no green notes !4.9% alc. Modest but adequate acid and some hard tannins from the oak. Very pricy for what you are getting and there are more elegant wines at this price point.

Mettler Family Vineyards 2010 Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP: $24): The Mettler family, across six generations, have grown grapes in Lodi since 1899, which is impressive to say the least. Their estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with 13% Petite Sirah and 1% Petite Verdot. In the glass, the wine displays a deep garnet-purple color with aromas of black cherries, blackberry, and mulberry intertwined with spice box, cedar shavings, and underlying floral tones. The aromas carry over to the palate with a fairly rich, round mouth-feel, ripe tannins, and balanced acidity, finishing with a savory mix of [baking] spices and dried herbs. Overall, a nice wine that won’t break the piggy bank that’s sure to complement spring and summertime backyard barbecues – think grilled burgers, sausage, chops, chicken, etc. Region: Lodi, California. (Other info: ABV 14.9%, 22 months in French oak, cork enclosure.)

A ripe and slightly sweet Zin on the nose and in the mouth. The alcohol was 15.5% but was not noticeable by mouth or nose. Nice Zin flavor, smooth in the mouth with a nice finish that exhibited a very slight hint of dryness. The Mettler Family Vineyard was established in 1899 and it shows. Made from old vines in Lodi this Zin is reserved and not nearly as hot as some of the other Zins I have tasted from Lodi. This wine is not a high octane flavor bomb but a Zin that is a little sweeter and refined with some nuance to the flavors.
