Garnet, opaque. Herbal-cassis aroma typical of cabernet. Hint of sweet oak, but not as pronounced as the Silver Oaks of the '70's from Justin Meyer (and I'm old enough to remember both Justin and his wines!). Still, an excellent, very drinkable wine, with excellent fruit and balance. Very drinkable and enjoyable now, but it should easily last another five or more years.

Tasted at dinner with '07 Cayuse En Chamberlin, which completely overshadowed it. This is medium garnet, almost completely opaque. The aroma is soft, sweet, with definite American oak, coconut, typical of the old Bonny's from the '70's, but without the herbal notes. The palate is soft and round, also with American oak and excellent cabernet-cassis flavors, a touch of vegetal. Perfectly ready, with slight astringency on the aftertaste. Long finish. I think half of the $140 price is the wine itself, the other half the Bonny's vineyard label. For wine in the glass, it's very overpriced.

2009 Meyer Family Syrah

10/21/2014 - Jack howland Likes this wine: 91 points

I thought this was a really good illustration of a cooler weather syrah! Definitely NOT one of those 15%+ bombs from Napa. (It clocks a 13.7% abv, by the way.)

This wine still exerted a strong backbone of well-balanced acidity and well-rounded tannins, but displayed pleasant notes of blueberries and jam, with a bit of tobacco and smoke in the finish.

This wine caught me by surprise. It exhibited strong, rustic aromas. It's definitely not a typical syrah, and I mean that in a very good way.

I bought this off of Last Call Wines and would immediately buy as much as I could again.

Nice nose of dark fruit, cedar and vanilla. Big cherry fruits with same cedar and vanilla notes on the nice long dry finish. Still young but plenty of fruit to enjoy now.

The label of this wine says "Dry Rosé of Syrah" but it's not dry. Yes, there is some residual sweetness. That said, it is a darkly colored rosé with a pleasant berry/plum bouquet, full flavors for a rosé, and a nicely balanced finish of tart and fruit. Quite a nice sipper.

Really an excellent, very drinkable wine. Decanted for a short time, but really almost a pop and pour. Not enough depth and length to make this a classic for me. Interesting cured meat notes and maybe a little smoke. Great with a flank steak on the the charcoal grill. Reminds me why I need to get away from my gas grill! I would not buy again due to poor QPR - too many other great wines for less. But, we all certainly enjoyed the one bottle!

Drank over several nights: initially quite oaky but smoothes out nicely on the second night. On the nose this shows deep tarry, plummy fruit. On the palate this is slightly creamy, with tar, plums, some meatiness and nice spice with a good medium finish with additional spiced and relatively mild tannins. This bottle provided smoother drinking experience than the previous one and the wine seems very much ready to be consumed. 89-90

Dark garnet, completely opaque. Sweet oaky cassis nose, with slight anise, reminiscent of the Silver Oaks of old. The aroma opened even more over two hours. It didn't open further...because it was gone! Great flavors, dark cherries, cassis, American oak, nice long aftertaste. This is not as profound or complex as Bonny's, but it's $50 compared to $140, so it's close enough for that price difference. This wine is perfectly drinkable now. It may gain slightly in complexity, but probably not much. It should hold easily for 3-5 years.

High Ground does imply higher elevations, just a name. Nose is similar to their regular Syrah bottling. Palate also similar, little more balanced with acidity, fruit isn't jumping out quite as much. Personally I like the regular bottling, but this does accomplish what they're trying to do with balance.
