1999 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts

Pinot Noir more

Fireworks in the glass! This wine has finally entered its prime drinking window. Fully mature nose very similar to its neighbor, La Tache, with tremendous Malconsorts weight. Lovely mature floral notes combined with classic Vosne spice on the nose. As good as a classic Malconsorts can be from an outstanding vintage which is evident in the ripeness and weight of fruit. It's not La Tache but this bottle was close with La Tache being more complete in every facet. Still this bottle was absolutely stunning! Wow wine.

a gentle wine but lacking in freshness and fruit - not sure whether it has just climbed back into its shell or maybe it is on its way out?

Casual Drinks Round 1 2016 (Extra Space Boon Keng, Singapore): Tasted aged with plastic notes. Palate very tight with good finish. Everyone guess it to be 90s but was surprise when it was revealed to be 2002. Not sure what happen here.

PnP. The wine took about half an hour to open up and the wait was worth it. Aromatic and very fine, this wine showed good depth and finished with a gentle persistence. More feminine than one would expect from a CdR but presumably that is due to the nature of the '97 vintage. Beautiful stuff and very much at peak now.

Impressive fruit nose. Berries with a hint of licorice. Big & bold fruit with a trace of lingering tannins. Long finish. A good wine. I will keep my 2nd bottle for a few years yet.

Has some earth and truffle development on the nose. In the mouth it is full sweet and vinous and trimmed with savoury flavours. There's good depth and concentration and it breathes up to show some engaging florals.

An impressive bottle with good complexity and structure. Showing the class of the plot.

Nice acidity--definitely pairs well with food. Actually drank with Asian lettuce wraps and thought it went well together. Nice bright sour cherries on the palette.

It had some purple fruit, strawberries, flower, and oak on the nose. The palate had a good structure with good red and purple fruit. However, the oak component was overwhelming. Its a bigger than usual 07. Hopefully the oak will integrate with time.

Half bottle. Unyielding deep ruby. Stemmy nose with camphor. Full bodied and meaty. Black fruit, herbs, and substantial tannins which have relaxed over the past several years. Good mouthful, but even out of half bottles, this wine has not traveled that great a distance over the past couple of years, a telling sign for 2005 Burgundy in general.

Deep red in colour although a bit of bricking on the rim. Classic Pinot nose. Lovely sweetness on the nose and palate.
Lots of spice on the palate with nice balance of fruit. Asian spices.
Very soft tannins, almost not noticeable. Overall I enjoyed this.

Not much to report on this bottle. Color a nice, transparent mid-ruby. Wet fur aromas which dissipated quickly, leaving not much else. No discernable fruit. Tannins somewhat drying. Prominent acid. Might have shown better with food.

Aromatics of dark berries and black cherries, earthy notes, mushrooms and herbal freshness in a precise, youthful and complex wine from infertile soils south of Chambertin. Youthfully structured with only very little ladybug greenness. Great length and freshness.
Maybe lacking some flesh.

Found one more bottle in the cellar and what a treat. Forward dark red fruit, raspberry with barnyard and leather adding complexity. Palate shows great bright fruit, acidity and mineral notes. Tannins completely resolved. Very pure village Burgundy, so enjoyable. Drink now. As good as village gets.

A very nice Burgundy with lots of berry/cherry/earthy notes both in the nose and flavor palate, and with his penchant for low yields it had a nice long finish. It was just not as expansive and rich as you'd hope for in a VR 1er.

A fairly light colour; a perfumed nose, showing red fruits (raspberry/cherry); medium weight, silky, very elegant palate, slightly exotic and showing good persistence; not a heavy wine, but fine nonetheless.

Prime of Life Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): Good but boring. If at all possible, this semmed to be quite a mechanical, paint-by-numbers Burgundy. It had a nice nose, with a touch of funky forest floor alongside dark cherries and plums and a hint of spice and rubber. The palate showed a good bit of fresh, juicy acidity running through a muscular, broad-shouldered mouthful of cherries edged with earth and spice and a touch of orange peel towards the finish. All in all, well-made and quite classily shaped, with just a touch of drying tannins throwing the overall feel off by a bit. However, the wine seemed to lack passion and interest and, like the Romanee St Vivant before it, came across quite monolithic. In fact, it was similar enough to the previous wine for us to guess that this was another 2001 Potel Grand Cru en magnum, albeit from an indeterminate village in the Cote de Nuits. Altogether, good, but not great

Prime of Life Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): First of a pair of rather disappointing Potel bottles. I have had a couple of bottles of this particular wine in the past. One really nice one in 2012 followed a very disappointing example in 2013. Unfortunately, this bottle was more akin to the later than the former. It was not a bad wine by any means, but again fell way short of what one would expect from a good RSV. I must say that it did have a beautiful nose, with whiffs of black cherries and the very darkest berries tossed together with some funky earth and meat, and a twist of licorice. Nice, but not quite RSV – this came across more like a very extracted Pommard or, dare I say, even a Chateauneuf-du-Pape with that bouquet. No one got it right blind. The palate shared some of the character of the nose. Far from the elegance and silk one would expect from the vineyard, we instead got lots of power and richness in the wine’s expression of dark cherries and blackberries. On the attack and midpalate at least, this certainly had impressive depth, even for a Grand Cru, and a nice bit of freshness as well. I just thought it felt rather clunky and lacking in charm, with a certain monolithic stubbornness that sometimes afflicts Potel’s wines. The finish conspired to thin out a little too, with the fruit fading behind a cloak of spice and herb Altogether, a decently good drink but, even in a magnum format, this is a wine that seems to be quickly losing its vitality and charm.

From magnum. Belated note so not the best description, but this really opened up to be full of red fruit and a bit of spice. Good medium weight palate with fine soft tannin. Acidity is ample, call it juicy, and while not at all excessive, this wine is best with food. Still a few years from peak maturity.

Red, with bricking at the rim. Matured on the nose, with mushroom, tea leaf and forest floor. Pretty much in a stage of dropping off the cliff, besides a hint of sour cherry and raisins, no fruits remained and thinned out with increased air. Acidic, lean and dry after an hour. Past its best.
