2005 Novelty Hill Cabernet Sauvignon

The last of six bottles we have been tasting over time, perhaps the best. I have always thought it a good, straightforward Washington Cabernet, but I have always wished for the oak notes (which were never terribly prominent, but which I dislike) to recede completely. They now have done so, and the fruit is still remarkably fresh for a new world Cabernet approaching its 10th birthday. Paired with grilled ribeyes from Kansas City and grilled asparagus, this wine was absolutely delightful, and warranted the aging. I have a few from the 2008 vintage in the cellar, and I'm looking forward to exploring them now.

Underrated on this list. Excellent balance with enveloping fruit and beautiful oak flavors. Not too tart but full of fruit, cherries, blackberries, plum, delicately portrayed. '10 wasn't a hot year, and it seems many are rating this as if it were... that is just not the right context.

Popped and poured, and drank over two days. Nose of red cherry, currant, chocolate, spice and forest floor. Cherry, plum, chocolate, spice and smooth tannins on the palate. Leads to a medium to long finish. Medium to full bodied. Softer with more chocolate notes on day two. I recommend at least a two hour decant as opposed to PnP. Good QPR. Paired well the first day with grilled pork chops.

A bit clumsy with the oak, which has been a disturbing trend with too many of Januik's wines IMO.

Black fruit and a hint of smoke on the nose. Blackberries and blueberries are in the lead, with some shades of graphite and spice. Tannins have melted a bit. Not a tremendously complex wine but a nice value for the price. Probably at peak now.

Oak and dull fruit on the nose. Amorphous fruit ending with unappealing oak. Low acid with a short finish. Not an appealing version of 2010.

Slightly smoky on the nose, along with aromas of dark roast espresso and green edged black fruit. Medium bodied with a nice mix of toasty blackcurrant that is streaked with herbal and floral elements. Some baking spice comes through on the finish.

PNP, needs to be decanted, it was coming on pretty good after an hour or so, I didn't give it enough time to develop.
Overall not a bad drinker, with good cellar time in front of it.

Cool weather cab, had me thinking moderately aged Bordeaux. Dark fruit, bit of herb, bit of mineral, fairly mature. Would have liked to have tried one younger, but that's a personal preference thing.

Has been a while since I had one of these, probably 3 vintages since I've had one. Solid purple/crimson color. Attractive nose, although a tad muted, licorice and warmed strawberries. Flavors are not as oaked as I remember past vintages - I wonder if Mike's crew has dialed back the new oak on this wine? Palate is a focused dark cherry flavor accompanied by the aforementioned licorice, some slight herbaceous flavors, and a decently long finish.

Good QPR. Nice wine that does a lot of things right. With a few exceptions, I feel most Washington Cabs drink similar to this one. Does not overpower you with a lot of complexity or aroma, but finishes nice with slightly fewer tannins than most California cabernets. I have 6+ more bottles and I feel they need to go in the next couple years.
