Slow O for 30-40 minutes...dark purple...dark fruit on the nose and palate...still some tannins that paired well with NY Strip...finish is fading a bit...suggest drinking up in the next 2-3 years.

2016 Kongsgaard The Judge Chardonnay - My first time tasting this elixir. The nose was somewhat reticent with a hint of lemon. On the palate, there are layers of rich, honeyed fruits, mouth-watering acidity with nice minerality. It’s a mouthful of wine, early in its evolution that I would love to try in 5 years or longer. There’s no rush. 98 pts with upside.

2007 Futo - Double decanted 2 1/2 hours prior to dinner. Ripe, full-bodied and opulent. Beautiful from the word go featuring blueberries and blackberries. Large CF component. Very smooth and great purity of fruit. Right in its prime for me. 98 pts

2007 Abreu Madrona Ranch - The most complex of the three reds we devoured. Wasn’t sure it was going to come around when I first opened it but 90 minutes after double decanting it certainly did. A nice amount of CF I’m sure. It’s black-fruited with a streak of red berries and a hint of spice. Tannins are ripe but firm. It’s great and will stay there for years to come. 98 pts (Do you sense a theme?)

2007 Outpost True Vineyard - Tight at first. I would recommend a 60 minute decant if consuming now. Surely will have the longest life of the three reds. Deep blue and black fruited with nice minerality. A powerful 100% Cabernet and, yes, 98 pts.

While qualitatively very similar, they took turns as WOTN which I found enhanced the experience. Futo out of the gate was on top, then Abreu and the last sips of the Outpost were it’s best. What was surprising to me was that only two of us are big fans of big, rich and ripe (modern) Cabernets. One was decidedly old world and one right in the middle. And yet, we all agreed on these beauties.

Excellent. Pnp undesirable - first glass was massive fruit and alcohol. Recorked and drank 2nd night after an hour decant. It settled down considerably, becoming softer and more integrated with a lengthy finish. Last glass was superb. Full bodied, dense dark fruits - ripe sweet blueberry, dark red cherries, very creamy mid-palate texture, moderate tannins. Went well with bbq teriyaki chicken thighs.

Popped two bottles and decanted for a couple of hours. Had in a Howell Mt extravaganza line up with a 2013 Bluford and two 2015 Del Dotto "The David". Very smooth and balanced for a six year old. Still a bit young for my palate but still quite lovely. TRY never fails to please. Juicy Howell Mt fruit followed by interesting notes of dark chocolate and some baking spice. This will continue to evolve and improve. Drink or hold.

TRB for the win! Beautiful wine at the 10-year mark...a concentrated yet silky effort. Black cherry, blackberry, and dark plum fruit. Notes of dark chocolate, leather, graphite, cedar, and toasty oak. Nice firm tannins and acidity, with a great long finish. No rush at all...this is built for the long run.

Deep color. Black cherries, black raspberries and hints of licorice, spice and herbalness in the nose. Black raspberries, plums and chocolate in the flavor. Very well balanced, lush mouthfeel, full bodied, and a long very smooth finish. Drinking very well right now. I will drink my remaining bottles over the next 2-3 years.

A fruit bomb in this lineup, but this was well poised, sappy, and delicious. Structure is there but there's considerable ripeness and "fattness" to fruit, Quite fun and easy to drink

I definitely caught the Rhubarb on the nose as a few others have noted. For the taste I caught quiet notes of cedar and menthol mixed with an understated dash of red fruit that I would say is closer to strawberries. The mouthfeel has a light cream feel but overall this was thinner and lighter than I expected. Overall I just did not think this drank up to its price point, nothing really stood out as unique for me. It’s fine, but there are wines that vastly exceed this bottle.

2005 Outpost Petite Sirah, The Other, Howell Mountain. This.....was legit the best PS that I've had in a while (maybe tied with the 1998 La Jota)! Why is that you ask? Because while it's full of pure dark fruits, pepper, and spice, it is WONDERFULLY balanced by literally loads of acidity and is almost refreshing to drink. People always talk about PS never evolving or gaining complexity (which I can understand sometimes), but this wine absolutely has. It's a medium - mouthful of happiness and I'm very excited to see where my last bottle goes over the next 5 to 10 years, as I'm positive that there is more upside. Great stuff!

Opened and immediately went through screen/aeration funnel into the decanter. Lots of sediment in the screen plus finer sediment in the bottle. After 30 minutes poured off a glass and rest went back in the bottle with no stopper for some slow ox.
After 90 minutes first taste. Red fruits on nose and some in the glass. More dark fruit though and some vegetation/herbs, plus some baking chocolate. Super nice mouthfeel- a little creamy, but also a little grip.
Two hours, smoothing out. Nose is fun now, like rhubarb and strawberry, and the palate has a little brightness, but turning darker and maybe even elegant (or a little closed off?) surprising for mountain fruit.
2.5 hours ok now this is a window, I like this. Pedigree showing now, the Howell mountain and TRB beaming through. More rounded, vegetation receded, fruits across the spectrum.
In the end, very good and I enjoyed the trip! Maybe needs to decant longer. Very enjoyable but I don’t know if it’s got much more to go.

This has been hiding in my cellar for a while. My experience with Petite Sirah-only wines is that they are super dense, gritty and teeth-coloring. This one was just over ten years old when I opened it, and the first night I felt like I was getting clubbed with a blackberry cudgel. A day's time and a little vacu-vin enabled rest in the bottle, and this turned into a very nice wine. Still have loads of blackberry and bramble, but some nice menthol and forest floor notes have appeared, and just the barest hint of iodine and meat. So yeah - drink'em if you got 'em. Tannins are smooth, acidity is low to medium and overall a very nice balanced wine. 15-20 second finish.

Opened but not decanted. Inky dark color with no sign of bricking yet. Dark and blue fruits on the nose, followed on the palate with addition of black cherry, violet and cassis. No hurry here. Throwing a ton of sediment - a decant wouldn’t hurt.

1/14/2024 - NiagaraWiner Likes this wine: 91 points

The 2017 Outpost Grenache presents a captivating visual with its fading rim and slight crimson brick hue. On the nose, it unfolds an intricate tapestry of aromas: cooked cherries and black olives intertwine with notes of leather, creating a rich, earthy foundation. This is further complemented by an aromatic medley of dried herbs and soil, hinting at its tertiary evolution. The delicate scent of dried roses adds a layer of complexity, while an intriguing hint of meat sauce deepens the overall olfactory experience.

Tasting this Grenache is a journey through a landscape of mature, concentrated flavors. It evokes raisins and cooked red fruits balanced by the robust presence of woody tannins. This wine demonstrates a blend of age, intensity and refinement, offering a taste experience that is both profound and lasting.
