Almonds and peach. Oak beautifully integrated to the fruit, with a buttery undercurrent. Amazing length, with acidity still evident. Still going strong, with at least 3 years to go, probably more.

What a surprise. Reluctantly opened out of curiosity. Not over oaked and plenty of fruit evident. Did not wane in the glass either. Really enjoyed.

Had to go 100 pts on this one as after 1,525 tasting notes on CT since 3/24/06 I have not had a better wine. Debated giving it 99 but this wine had no flaws so how can I not score it perfect? Of course it was my first and only Grange so possibly the '98 or '04 would have rated higher if I had the privilege to taste such vintages but alas this was all my modest cellar contained.

I had sourced this on 6/1/05 for a bargain $165 and when I tagged it I wrote "for Retirement" on the bottle not quite knowing at that time when the day would come and stuffed it away in the wine cooler. Fast forward 10 years and a month and retirement day has arrived. Walked out after 30+ years without my laptop and company phone and I could have floated across the parking lot!

I knew this needed a serious decant so opened it at 3pm and tried a first sip and the tannins let themselves be known so into the decanter it went. Finally around 6:30 time for the first pour with my wife into our Riedel glasses and a joyous clink of the glasses on the deck. Color was a dark crimson with some bricking in the color, very unlike young Aussie' Shriaz. Swirling brought out aromas of cigar box, forest, dried fruit. First sip was mouth coating with cranberries, earthy notes, allspice.
After we got to "know" the wine it exhibited many personalities. A times it had the elegance of an aged Bordeaux, other times it had the power of a Napa Cab. Kind of odd was that it never had the extracted Shiraz flavor found in many wines from down under. No this was all about class and balance. The finish would go on and on for 50-60 seconds (that was a benefit as it made every sip last and slowed down the consumption of this marvelous wine)! Paired it with prime filet and fresh corn and baked potato, the perfect accompaniment for this bottle.
I told my wife that it would have been awesome if I had a bigger wine budget in 2005 and bought all 3 bottles my local wine shop had because it would be fascinating to try this one in 5 then 10 years. You could just tell it had the stuffing to last. A remarkable wine on a remarkable day in our lives. Cheers!

This well-cellared bottle (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) shows an opaque red/garnet robe, as well as plenty of black and red fruit on both the nose and palate. Fig, anise and vanilla round out the flavors and are wrapped in a full-bodied, moderately tannic frame laden with American oak. The alcohol is nicely integrated and the middle palate is solid. Perhaps the most impressive quality of this Cabernet is its long, smooth finish. Drink now-2020.

Decanted for about an hour and drink over the next 2 hours.
Intense dark inky red with purple hue. Showing aromas of blackberry, dark plum, spice, roasted coffee, toasty oak and hints of pepper.
Fresh and good medium+ bodied, exhibits blackberry, dark cherry and spice. Still prominence oak with flavours of coconut and vanilla oak. Some structure and it has got enough acidity to lift the weight. Long finish with spicy notes and roasted coffee. Good QPR and Bin 28 remains the benchmark for mid-price range Aussie Shiraz.

The bottle was in perfect condition. The wine was medium ruby in colour, turning garnet at the edges. It offered a complex and expressive bouquet of red cherry, dried red currant, Asian spices, herbs, sandalwood, tobacco and balsamic notes. On the palate the wine showed cherry, blackberry, dried red currant, spices, black pepper, tobacco, some chocolate and balsamic notes, complicated by herbal spiciness, with medium-plus acidity, medium-plus tannin and good length. The acidity seemed a little out of balance. The full-bodied wine was best immediately after popping the cork, faded as time passed and developed a drying black tea leave sensation over time. Past peak. Drink up. NR

Opaque ruby and stuffed with ripe fruit, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offering delivers aromas and flavors of blackberries, currants, blueberries, anise and fig. While this wine does receive some French Oak in vinification, it is the American oak's characteristic eucalyptus that is most notable. Full-bodied and with low-to-medium acidity, it wraps its flavors with big sweet tannins and does so without significant alcoholic heat. The middle palate is solid and the vanilla-laden finish is medium in length. A bit of cellar time is in order here. Drink 2018-2028.

A superior port. Perfect amber red colour. Nose of sharp menthol, spice and honey. Lovely thick almost syrupy mouth feel. A big poweful complex combination that is caramel, , pepper and cinnamon with some rich stewed apricot on the mid palate. It nicely finishes with sharp grapefruit to balance out the whole act and and long finish of lingering caramel and spice. Great!

Imperfect cork and imperfectly cellared over the years, however:
Brick red, pure, lovely nose of brambles, blackberry, molasses and toffee. Nicely aged palate of berries, plums, spice, some licit ice notes. Not particularly complex. Considering what it's been through, drink now, but may satisfactorily last another 5 years?

Decanted 2 hours before drinking. Rich, extracted, more strawberry/raspberry than expected Shiraz blueberry/blackberry, oak integrated but very prominent. Chewy, concentrated, long finish. Hints of earth, dark chocolate. Good wine, but the sum didn't reflect the parts for me. 91 for now, drank day delivered, hoping some time to settle brings it together better. Good but not as expected.

Well done and ready to drink, but not very exciting. I was expecting sooo much more after all these years of careful aging in the cellar. Will definitely last for 10-15 more years...but how much more can it improve...not much in my opinion.

South Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah more

6/19/2015 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 98 points

This iteration of Grange is a blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Opaque ruby, intensely aromatic and packed with dark fruit, it flaunts not only blackberries and blueberries, but adds chocolate, anise, pine nuts and minerals to its aroma and flavor profiles. Full-bodied and with low-to-medium acidity, it wraps its flavors with big sweet tannins and shows no sign of alcoholic heat (14.5%). Layered and solid in the middle, it closes with impressive length. Currently drinkable and delicious, this has at least another two decades of life (assuming well-cellared). Drink now-2035.

Exceptional Shiraz. The balance in oak, tannins and fruit is right in my wheelhouse for taste. Great color, aromatics and a long finish. Definitely putting some away in the cellar. QPR was through the roof but that's not fair as I scored an exceptional price through a friend.

Heck and I'm not even a big Shiraz fan.

I didn't have high hopes for what is effectively the Mouton Cadet of the Penfolds range. Let's just say it proved me wrong. This was a pop and pour with no decant or aeration. It has a really classy nose of sour cherry, cassis and spice with secondary suggestions of earth, instant coffee and maybe tobacco - more than you usually get from a 10GBP bottle anyway. In the mouth it is super-balanced with delicious primary fruit and some nice lifting acids. Okay, it lacks any real textural interest or grip, but sometimes you don't want a super-extracted wine that has to sit in a decanter for hours before you can drink it. Will buy again.

Ok I didn't wait until 2016. Same notes as last time really. Didn't enjoy or start to soften and open more until 10 hours in decanter. Nose of big rich aus Shiraz - too much. Palate of predominantly Shiraz character profile. Still lots of tannin and fruit and acidity. I would say a min of another 2 years, preferably 3-4 (should be drinking much better)......so 2017-2018 for next bottle ? I think it will evolve positively but may just soften and reduce richness and no more complexity ?

I have been walking past the wines from this producer almost as long as I can remember without giving them as much as a notice. Though by no means spectacular, this is way more than just acceptable and actually pretty good. This is one of those value Merlot's you could pick out blind because of the mild but noticeable green pepper and wet flint. Not rich and fruity. Probably a little artificial and manipulated. Wish it had more fruit. The oak probably did not come from barrels, but overall not too bad. The finish is quite stylish with moderate cherry before oak and graphite.
