This wine always consistently outperforms for the price, and this vintage is no different; Lovely sherried character, with tones of roasted nuts, stone fruit and vanilla, all with a big hit of acidity on the finish

July 4 Wines with the Family; 7/3/2015-7/4/2015 (Deanna): Visual:
Medium minus concentration, garnet core to a slightly tawny rim.

Nose:
Oxidative - some fig skin oxidation, combined with some animal Brettanomyces tones. Reminds me strongly of Musar, except with American oak and dried red fruit instead of darker fruit (Musar for me tends towards the blackberry / tamari character).
Glossy reddish-brown nose. Dried red fruits.
Mature and complex.

Palate:
Medium body, moderate alcohol (13.5%)
Leather, tobacco, savory umami.
Rich well-integrated oak (not new) that manifests for me as a sort of roundness, mocha sweetness.
Excellent elevated acidity, soft low tannins.

I’m really enjoying this, though for me it doesn’t have the depth, savoriness, and complexity of a great Musar.

Score: Between 8.5 and 9.

A fine-boned wine, almost aristocratic in its poise and balance. All elements integrated with nothing sticking out, nothing over the top. Somewhat reserved and slightly austere. High acid, salty, nutty, mineral and long. Superb with paella and tapas.

Somehow my last bottle of this, I just couldn't stop drinking them. At a great place in evolution, drinking better than the 2001 right now, less overt oak and generally more integrated. Warm, mature, and familiar while showing great interest, fruit, and freshness too. Lots of bottle variability as is typical with LdH, but instead of having a poor year, they just made a wine to enjoy while the other ones rest.

Lovely fruit forward bottle balanced with a healthy dose of earth and must. This bottle has matured since I last tasted it (~1-2 years).

Nez fantastique floral, mielleux et rancio.
Très long sur notes de noisettes/amandes et cire d'abeille, note de zeste d'orange (grand marnier.). Légèrement rancio. Plus doux que le Gravonia.
Une aubaine!

Decanted for a couple of hours and drunk across 2-3. The nose is very distinctively Bosconia - delicate slightly sour cherry with hints of herbs and leather, intoxicating even at quite q primary phase. The palate is silky but intense with lovely balance. The wine changed constantly in the glass, first producing a distinctive pleasant dill note which morphed into a meaty tone as the wine seemed to put on some weight in the final glass. Great now as not too coiled, but loads of time in hand. ****(1/2)

It is always exciting to open a bottle of Tondonia Gran Reserva. This bottle did not disappoint. Very light ruby color with some brown around the edges. On the initial pour, the nose showed a lot of cedar, spice and a hint of vanilla and smoke. The palate showed much of the same but also pleasant notes of tart cherry and black tea. As the wine has evolved, notes of orange zest emerge. There's nice, refreshing acidity here as one always seems to get with LdH. This wine is so nicely balanced as to be almost weightless on the palate. This is a fun wine to drink! I think it is fantastic now but given LdH's track record, feel free to continue to hold for several more decades.

The more I have this wine the more I really dig it. Layers and depth with a bit of funk that's hard to place. Really just a fine wine at is best.

This really started to blossom after 3 hours of being open; With air, the nose really jumped out of the glass, with tones of American oak, earth and tobacco aromas; The palate has lots of beautiful, lush fruit with a an almost weightless quality to it; An excellent wine now, that has a long, long life ahead

HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): An outstanding rioja. Had the textbook nose of nutty, red fruit with earthy/floral undertones. Palate was in great balance with the secondary flavors on display along with great acidity and structure which bodes well for further development.

Durian and Wine at Alex's (Alex and Fiona's in AMK): Quite delicious. Neither the nose complex nor the most compelling and, if I am to be honest, a rather advanced, but yummy nonetheless. The nose had a whiff of ripe blueberries and blackberries streaked with a bit of stalky herb, funky earth and drifts of smoky, spicy cigarette notes. The palate still showed a chew of fine, mouth coating tannins and bright, orange citrus acidity, but the flavours were soft and mellow and rather advanced, with shades of preserved berries and cherries and a haw flake sweetness trailing away into a deliciously smoky, ashy finish. It was just a tad soft and lacking conviction at the finish. Otherwise, this was very enjoyable.

Massive, in both size and dimension. No development really since I last tried it six or seven years ago, if anything I think I may have caught it in a sleepy cycle, though it seemed to come back around toward the end of the night. One of the greats. Come back in 20 years.

Old musty cellar nose, full of sweet strawberry and tobacco and old oak, but somewhat one-dimensional for this wine in other vintages. Long and finely sweet, this is a great wine but not a great Tondonia.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Yeah, there's definitely a good whiff of American oak on the nose from that greenish dill note. But really, how can you not expect that? The palate has fantastic ripe plum notes, coupled with a fair bit of funky earth and leather. This is austere and fruity at the same time. Black magic, I say. Especially at the prices that these wines command, it's quite embarrassing how I don't have any of these in my cellar...

Very interesting. Bright gold, it gives this impression of an ageless wine, similar to what good Loire Chenins or Jura whites deliver. Complex and fresh, silky texture, long. Great food wine, think about Tapas but also fish. Outstanding QPR. Exllent. Drink or hold.

Drinking well now but the American oak is still pretty powerful and the dill is a little too prominent. Underneath there is a fantastic base of tobacco, stewed red fruit and that old school Tempranillo funk. From my experience with other vintages, the oak will integrate in the next 10-15 years and the wine will reach its peak sometime after. Mid-sixties to early seventies vintages are drinking beautifully right now.

I should have read others' notes on this before opening. Brought to a restaurant and decanted for only about 30 minutes before drinking over the course of an hour or so. Really nice fruit aromas with just a hint of vanilla. But the acidity just wouldn't calm down without more air. With some fairly aggressive spins in the glass you could get nice integration with some slight earthy flavors mixed in with the fruit--tantalizing with the promise of what this wine has in it. I recommend much longer decanting (a couple hours at least) if you're not holding this for a few more years. No rating as I feel I mistreated this wine. Lesson learned.

By the glass at Etapes in Barcelona. Medium golden color. Again this oxidative note on the nose but unlike the red 02 Tondonia a few days ago, I really like this wine. Almonds on the palate, complexity and texture remind me of a Sauternes but without the sweetness I am not too keen on. Long finish. Great white.

Medium center, garnet edge. At first, I got nothing but astringent, pine resin and a thin, pickle barrel taste. After a few hours in the decanter, the wood backed off and it did develop more flesh, medicinal black cherry fruit, vanilla, and even a touch of chocolate. That said, I still found the wood and the acidity to be too aggressive on the back end. This is very, very young Bosconia, but given these real concerns about the balance, I'm not inclined to lay away bottles and bet on its achieving more satisfying equilibrium down the road. Very different impression than the '94 Tondonia left the other night.

Tawny center, light rim. Right out of the bottle, typical pine laden wood, but this relaxed to reveal spice and red berry. Light weight and just gorgeous texture-round and harmonious with late, crisp acidity. Subtly sweet with gentle vanilla and melting tannins. Quite young and probably a few years from full maturity. This grew into an outstanding example as it sat out. In the end, just loved it.

Second white from Harry's 41st and definitely a The crowdpleaser, very unique tropical, citrus, and sherry-esque flavor profile backed with the typical LdH lanolin-beeswax-spicy funk. High marks for aged Rioja blanco and nice price- $25 from Wine Authorities. Overall evaluation: A-.
