Very nice Chard, while clearly new world and Californian it has the balance of an old world wine. Bright medium lemon yellow in color with a nose of citrus, wet stones and stone fruit. Palate is luxurious in texture and full of white peach and lime zest through a long precise finish. Very nice weight but in perfect balance.

Oops, forgot I opened one of these so recently. Had a greek-style zucchini pie, and didn't know what to pair, so I brought out a few wines. On the nose: strawberry, black tea, baking spice, a soft touch of vanilla, beautiful aromatics. On the palate, great acidity, soft black pepper, ripe wild strawberry, a touch of blackberry and tea. Soft tannin on the finish. Pop.and pour and definitely drinking well now.

Dark ruby red, little aroma upon opening but after an hour in decanter dark berry notes started to appear (2-3 hours airtime probably better), dense dark berry and plum fruit, some spice and mineral, smooth tannins, perfect balance, med-long finish. The first of these that we had tried. This was a terrific bottle and indicates that patience was needed. Will try another bottle in a couple of years.

This is turning a corner, and entering a nice place. The fruit has mellowed, and there are herbal and earthy nuances that are starting to add a layer of complexity. I think another 2-3 years could find this in a very good spot. Good to have one tonight, and happy to have more for the future.

A solid wine from Rhys but not their best. Don’t get me wrong, this is an excellent wine just not quite at the level of some of their others. A bit one dimensonal, dark fruits and saddle leather. Shows potential to get better with time.

Blind: thought it was big house champagne.

Light to Medium gold color. Pours a bit foamy and then settles down. Has a classic champer nose with an every so slight bit of oxidation. The citrus/stone fruit didn't scream Pinot or Chardonnay only. Has a fuller mouthfeel than some of the classic acid driven growers so i'm leaning towards a more classic champagne blend of grapes and house style. I like it. Good complexity.

When the bag was pulled I just starred at the label. Rhys but... Ultra Brut? what? I had heard rumors last year during a visit from Brinkman and company that there were more sparklers coming down the pipe but with Rhys that could mean they're looking to purchase land, or it's already sitting down in the cellar for 4 years or anything in between. No idea when this will see the light of day but it's very good right now.

A blend of Chardonnay (62%) and Pinot Noir (36%), with two-thirds of the fruit from the 2017 vintage, the remainder from 2016. About 20 months on the lees, with 2g/L dosage. Disgorged April 2020. Citrusy, with some light notes of jasmine and pounded rock. Pink grapefruit, honeyed yellow apple and a good dollop of orange really underpins the palate. It also reminds me of jasmine, as the floral note gets infused into the wine, along with even a little spicy bergamot. The acidity here is bright and long throughout the wine, ending with a lemon rind impression and the same cool orange fruit note. Knowing there is Pinot Noir here, and perhaps biased by the intent to 'find it', I was careful to not try and push that grape into my note here but as I retaste the wine this morning, with most of the CO2 gone and at a room temp of 71f, there is a strawberry note here but in total, the Chardonnay does speak in the wine at this stage, and it drinks with a purity, a successful balance and the acidity really helping it all come together.

This showed excellent, seeing about 4 hours of air. This bottle has the same pinot funk aroma that the July 2019 bottle showed, too. The wine fans out across the palate, with a tangy, herby note, followed by cranberry, strawberry jam and asian 5-spice. I found this to be 'pure', that sense of purity that the bottle from last year showed, too.....retasting 24 hours later without food and at room temp of 71f. Aromatic now holds the 5-spice, along with a touch of evergreen. The intensity on the wine dials up more today, along with the juicy red fruit notes--cranberry, cherry and strawberry. And the palate weight impression today is clear, showing a true medium weight. I mention this because of my reference to strawberry 'jam' from yesterday's impressions. There is nothing heavy here. What I do predict can happen with this wine is for the brown spice notes (from the 30% new oak) to fold in better, which would soften some of the spiciness. Overall, this is a strong, deeply flavored version of Alpine, with a mix of savory, crunchy and juicy components.

Purple and black fruit flavors with a pinch of pepper and green herbs. Medium+ bodied with medium+ acidity and fine grained tannins. Finishes leaving a long trail of creosote in the mouth. More about elegance than power; well made but lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.

Cork soaked to the top, some signs of slight leakage. Medium lemon color. When first poured, this was expressive but not particularly interesting. Aromas of lemon curd, but not much more. The palate was medium full with good concentration and nice zingy freshness. It was nice but not complex at all. After an hour or two open, however, some more complexity emerged, including some herbal notes and a pungent minerality on the nose. The palate began to have more delineation, and the finish also proved long, unfolding the herbal and mineral notes from the nose. I preferred a recent '13 Horseshoe Chard for its cooler, lighter profile and for its abundant non-fruit notes. The Alpine shows a little young to my taste, and I feel it has aging potential, but the status of the '13 corks concerns me. I'll be opening my other bottles sooner rather than later, but I would recommend a decant.

One hour decant. This one was a bit disappointing. Relatively austere nose. Tt definitely has a nice mouthfeel with no sign of excess alcohol. However, the black fruit seemed almost muted. It seemed like it was at an awkward phase between the passion of youth and the more nuanced tertiary characteristics I would hope for with some age.

Medium ruby color. Aromas of pomegranate, hibiscus, earthy spices, pine forest, hints of allspice. Dense and medium bodied, with fig driven fruit and sandalwood, tea and floral spice depth. Dry and rough grainy tannins at first, gaining some volume and roundness with air. Moderate acidity, juicy depth on the finish. Good flavor development, grainy and unyielding structurally at first, recommend a decant. Tough to read the potential: 89-90.

Tasted blind. Lovely nose of white pepper, red berries, and a hint of smoke. Quite tart on the palate with good acidity, tart berries, orange peel, some darker fruit characters, and a slight bitterness. Great structure and a long, lingering finish. Really great young Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot. 94+

Much lighter and lower intensity than other Rhys chardonnays -- a village wine among premier crus. It still offers a lot of interest and is fully ready for drinking.

This is a sophisticated version of Syrah - actually a bit too sophisticated. There’s nice Syrah character, decent fragrance and acidity. But the tannins are too soft, too smooth. I don’t expect Cayuse, but I yearned for something more to grab my gums and grate my tongue. Perhaps it was more demonstrative when younger. I want my Syrah to behave a lot differently than Pinot Noir.
