decanted for about 2 hours (the black fruits wafted up from the decanter immediately). rich with dark fruit, floral and bramble/spice notes. on the palate, this is focused with tannins lifting the fruit extract and acid to support the richness. at this point, this wine is quite enjoyable but the fruit is all wrapped up in the acid/tannin. i suspect this will soften with time and evolve into something quite beautiful - try another in 5 years.

Fantastisk god vin. Dette er egentlig barnrov, men luftet 1 time i bredbunnet karaffel. Åpner seg mer underveis. Flotte modne bær, fin balanse og nydelig silkemyke integrerte tanniner. Ettersmak som sitter.

Opened, poured into a decanter, swirled and then poured back into the bottle. Served about 1 hour later. Served with food (barbecued spare ribs, cheesy polenta and roasted cauliflower).
Good nose of spice, black fruits, and a hint of roast meat.
Rich and inviting flavors of black cherries, some chocolate notes and an herbal mint/basil/sage element.

Opened, poured into a decanter, and then back into the bottle.
Served with food (barbecued ribs, cheesy polenta and roasted cauliflower, in case you were wondering).
Good spice on the nose, with a touch of red fruits. Good acidity that was a bit too shrill at first but mellowed a bit over time.
Nice bright fruits and spice. A bit earthy, likely from the mataro.
Label indicates the blend of 40% grenache, 40% mataro, 15% zinfandel, and 5% carignane.

There's no mistaking this for anything other than California, lots of hedonistic pleasure here. In a good spot right now, but no rush to open - plenty of life left.

Loads of potential here. Classic aromas of crushed raspberries, cracked pepper, coal dust, and a touch of vanilla. Oak is restrained, alcohol in check, and plenty of acidity and gentle tannin to give it the backbone for long aging.

Poured out two glasses around 45 min before serving. Opaque core with a light violet rim. The nose comes in waves of dark berries, black pepper & herbal aromatics. Beautifully perfectly ripened black & blue fruit on the palate. The structure & texture here are the story for such a young wine. Bright & fresh and in perfect balance. Ridge are masters in using oak as an element in wine. The oak is in harmony with the other components and the integration is part of the magic of Ridge wines in years to come. Consistent in every vintage and the 2012 is excellent.

Company Wine tasting (The Hide): Nice golden colour - the nose there was bundles of fruit. On the palate were tropical fruits but woah... the oak. Maybe my palate is note a fan of american oak - but it became more and more noticeable. Interestingly the group absolutely love this... I'm more neutral about it. Probably unbalanced in the quality/price war towards price.

In the CA Zin tasting, the 2 blends took top honors, with this bottle placing 2nd. The nose had hints of grass and slight pepper, but also had a strong, robust fruit foundation. The flavor was even on the palate with very nice mid fruits and a good mellow finish. It was quite enjoyable, and is teaching me that Zin seems to do better when it is blended.

Sister's Birthday Dinner: The cork had only come out half an inch and I had to pause to admire the intensely sweet fragrance, and I'm thinking this is going to be good. Sample pour is still quite tannic though and this needs every bit of 3 hours of slow-ox to drink well. Pretty much the complete package for Montebello, sweet high-toned red fruits, touch of resiny complexity, continues to improve over 2-3 more hours. This should hold for years. Cellared since release, my last bottle.

Dark garnet and plum purple with edge thinning and medium viscosity in the glass. Nose of fig, stewed plum, bramble, mushroom an dusty attic. Medium body, rustic and a touch of jamminess. Stewed plum, brambly dark fruit, muddy earth, black tea, currant and secondary sweet spice on the palate. Medium finish. Fun to taste aged Cali zin, but this one left me bored after a couple mouthfuls.

Pop and pour at home. Nose shows considerable wood. Coconut oil, robust black fruit. Who's substantial oak at the get go, baking spice, menthol, pepper. Sweet purple-ness. Palate is loaded, the bigger, more extracted, more oaked side of Ridge Estate Cab. Give this some time, drink again in 2018.
