This was phenomenal. Nicely aged and could have gone at least 5 more years. Subtle notes of tobacco and cassis. Earthiness, gravel/graphite, and hints of bramble. Nicely balanced with a long, velvety finish.

My last of 5 bottles, this was a fine showing for one of my all-time favorite zins. It didn't show the strong acetone fumes that marred the prior bottle. That said, it is definitely high octane and a bit porty. Smooth and rich with dark mountain fruit, it still has some tannins left to be resolved over the next year or two. This is just entering its peak phase, and I'm envious of anyone who still has some of this zin on hand.

Wine has a great nose. Smells like like a cab franc based Bordeaux. Slightly under ripe at 13.2 abv so it lacks a bit of fruit. Drink over next few years.

Green apple on the nose.
Probably a little too cold at first sip as the oak was like a 2x4. As it warmed a little bit the fruit came out a bit but was still restrained by the oak.
Baked apple with just a touch of spice (cinnamon?), citrus in the background. Decent finish. A crisp, fresh wine with some minerality.
Not bad, but just the oak never seemed to intergrate with the wine. Instead of adding nuisanced flavors it was "wood".
Not the wine I remembered tasting at the winery.

This 2013 Ridge Geyserville was a nicely balanced wine. Mostly Zin, but had just enough of other varieties that made this one achieve "crowd pleaser" status. Definitely a wine that will age a while, but my grubby hands made sure that swift murder was completed tonight. This wine had massive young fruit notes on the front and middle. The entry of the wine is darker with some heat. Mostly black cherry but with a hint of cigar, smoked meat, young shoe leather and mint. The middle is darker, black licorice and a hint of pepper. The finish is peppery, almost "winter minty" and sweet tannin that was quite firm. This one will sit for another decade. If you're holding this, HOLD IT...don't be stupid like me and consume it because the best IS yet to come! But, still great wine on a Saturday night and complemented dinner well!

My third (out of 6 that I bought) of this wine in the past 12 months. My feelings on this have been consistent. Its one of the few 2011s that I have not been disappointed in. Not your typical Monte Bello. Unlike most Monte Bellos this is much more fruit forward and approachable at a young age. This bottle was popped and poured. No real chance for it to breathe. Compared to other 2011s I have had, it has a longer finish.

Ordered from a wine list at dinner. A year after my initial tasting, it is not yet giving up anywhere near the complexity it is capable of. It's pleasant enough but seems kind of a shame to open at this stage. I'd recommend sitting on it for a good 4-5 years. (91+)

This is the first Montebello I've opened in a decade...Opened and decanted for 3 hours, was very surprised how soft the tannins were. Silky smooth with lush fruit. We were surprised the 2005 Santa Cruz Mountains that followed had much firmer tannins.

From a 375ml bottle. A more mature version of the bottle I had 4 years ago. Much more mellow overall, though plenty of body and richness remain. The Carignan seems to stick out, unfortunately it makes the wine more stewy and syrupy, not my thing. Sediment evident in the bottle, probably peaking.

Not decanted. Medium dark purple core and ruby rim in the glass. Youthful aromas of loganberry, tar, green pepper and smoked game. The palate brings tart blackberry, black cherry and sweet licorice. Acidity is high, and tannins are medium. Finishes at medium length with a touch of residual sugar. Overall, I felt this was unbalanced and too clinical in character for my taste. Pretty much unchanged on day two.

We drank the 2002 and the 2003 side by side - both tremendous wines. The 2003 was a little more austere than the 02. We waffled back and forth as to which one was better, in the end we decided there were both great but different. Less fruit forward, more bordeaux like. A little more mineral, slightly more spice, but well balanced and drank well over 5 hours.

We drank the 2002 and the 2003 side by side. Both fantastic. The 2002 was beautiful, the fruit was pronounced, blackberry, currants, tremendous balance, great acidity. This wine was very much alive after 14 years, must have been the petite syrah in the blend I suppose. Likely would have held up for 3-5 more years but was tremendous last night.

Amazing nose! Wild sagebrush, raging campfire, crushed strawberry fruit, old pine tree. Mature strawberry fruit with just a hint of funkiness in the mouth. Mid palate is brisk, but carries flavors of charcoal, pipe tobacco, and sweet candied plums. Dynamic finish of eucalyptus that leaves your tongue tingling. Believe it or not, this is not past peak and will hang around for a little while longer. Of course at this age, there are only good bottles.

No notes taken. Deep ruby with purple notees. Impressive aromas of black fruit, leather, tobacco, dark chocolate. Dry, medium(-) acidity, medium(+) ripe tannin, high alcohol and medium-medium(+) body. Flavors of blueberries, black cherries, chocolats, nutmet, sweet spice, cinnamon. Full body, yet elegant and not overpowering. Great length with mineral focused chalky finish. Balanced, remarkably light-footed texture, elegant and sinewy. Probably the most tannic of the lot. Keep another 3-5 years and then decant and eat grilled meat.
