Drank this after a 90 minute decant at Indaco in Charleston. Super expressive nose of soy sauce. Very open and integrated with a touch of heat on the lengthy finish. This very impressive stuff.

I'll start with a litany of disclaimers: 1) Steve Nordhoff (proprietor of Riverain) is a friend of mine, 2) While I love the style of wines Thomas Rivers-Brown drinks himself (Giacosa!), I typically don't like the style of wines he PRODUCES, 3) I was told by Mr. Nordhoff that I would NOT like this wine...

I'm happy to say that the third disclaimer is proven not true, as I like this wine quite a lot. Yes, it is still the fuller style that TRB has become famous for, but there is a lot of complexity that keeps it from being moved in the 'mochaccino' category, as many highly-rated, super New World cabs from Napa often fall for me. The nose is beautiful - raspberry, the smell of fresh water like on a rolling river (ugh, as I wrote that, I winced given the winery name - apologies), and very aromatic florals like rose, lilac, maybe even jasmine. Nice nose, with just a hint of rustic character as well. On the palate, it's softer than I'd typically enjoy, but it reminded me actually of a Ridge Montebello from a super rich and ripe vintage, actually, in terms of its flavor profile. Fresh, dominated by black and red fruits, rather sweet, and no real tannic structure, which I miss. Seems to have a bit of acid, but I doubt this will be a great food match - it's very enjoyable on its own, so no need for food, in my opinion.

I didn't intend to prove you wrong, Steve, but I do like it, quite a bit. Jen even more so. My one remaining bottle hopefully will get some cellar time, as I'd like to see where this goes - it's lush but complex, so cellar time might be very interesting.

This is the second time to try the grapes from Tench Vineyard, but this is the first time to try pure Tench. The style of this wine is really a balanced style without making a typical overpowering Napa Cab. On the nose, tart cherry, cedar, vanila, and plum were mild but vivid at the edge of the glass. After sipping in, well-integrated sweetness and sourness makes the wine really fresh and vivid. Then, licorice and ripen tannin support a long lasting about 20 seconds. In this classic vintage, jammy and imbalance are easily found dominant characters in the most of the Napa wines. However, this one is one of the kind. I almost am deceived that this is a right bank wine, because the wine is redder and more like Merlot based wines. It reminds me the Merlot from Pahlmeyer but more profound. Excellent work! People now probably all agree that Thomas Rivers Brown is the top three winemaker in Napa valley. Hope I can try some more from him in the future. For me, he is another magician in Napa valley, who is also good in multiple varieties with creative ideas.

After 90 minutes in a decanter, this wine is a stud. Loads of upfront black fruit with a supple finish and a hint of yummy plum at the very end. Thomas Rivers Brown is one incredible winemaker.

Riverain Winemakers Dinner with Steve Nordoff (FMIII in the OC): Big hitter alert with this vintage, it screams Napa. 2013 berries were smaller and the structure reflects the higher skin ratio. The nose isn't even giving up much, palate is a bit astringent with a full dose of angular tannins. Fruit flavor is very dark currant and plum. This vintage has it all but needs a few more years to start unfolding. The drinking window could easily extend 20 years. The winemaker decision to hold back the release 6 months is wise, no reason to get greedy and open this too soon. Patience grasshopper.

Riverain Winemakers Dinner with Steve Nordoff (FMIII in the OC): Very dark plum color, certainly more concentration than the '11. Spicy palate of cassis, plum, and sandelwood. This was my favorite of the cab flight just because it had everything firing tonight.

Riverain Dinner (My House In The South OC): Tasted next to the 2011 and 2012. This was the biggest of three, with the most oomph, depth and youth showing. Dark, with iron, dark plum, some vanilla and bittersweet chocolate. This will need time to come together as it came across as compact and tight.

Riverain Dinner (My House In The South OC): Tasted next to the 2011 and 2013. I struggle with tasting and figuring out new era Napa cab, as I have a hard time figuring out what good looks like, I don't drink enough of it, I guess. So if the descriptors here don't fit, simply judge accordingly. Fig and dark plum, cassis and some opulence, reminding of the new era Napa style.

Sitting next to Brig Campbell, his tasting indicator of "dark raspberry" was an astute way to characterize the fruit. Also got the sense of some coffee and maybe a cherry type note, too. Certainly in the 2011, the vintage speaks, as much as it does beautifully in the 2011 Riverain Syrah.

Riverain Dinner (My House In The South OC): Drank this next to the 2011 and 2012. For me, these two wines at this stage outshine the 2013. The answer lies for me in palate preference, as similar to the 2013 I carefully and at length wrote up last April, the bottle we had last night was quite similar to that one, as were the tasting markers I jotted down without any bias from the April note. Taste indications like a molten quality, iron, richness and obvious fruit. It finishes with some dark chocolate, tannin and approaching full bodied. For me, this rings more true of the syrahs I used to drink, where fruit and ripeness are the core indicators, which is not the syrahs I drink in today's times. Without a doubt in my mind, this 2013 is going to appeal to the palates that like the richer CA style, and there is plenty of folks in that audience still these days. I just prefer the 2012 for richness, and the fact the richness of that wine is a level of measure below that of the 2013.

Riverain Dinner (My House In The South OC): Drank this next to the 2011 and 2013. The 2012 is what I see as a good middle road for the CA syrah drinker. It shows dark, like pen ink in color, with steak sauce, some tart blackberry and black olive. It has the richer tone of the 2013 (but not the more overt fruit that the 2013 shows), and it finishes with great structure and like the bottle I wrote up this past May, this is going to age with great potential. All together, has the deeper color and fruit of the vintage but it stays well proportioned and complex, to satisfy a broad spectrum of CA syrah palates. Very good again, lots of upside.

Riverain Dinner (My House In The South OC): I have drank about 1/2 dozen of these since release and this wine keeps on making me smile. The black pepper aromatic is like a freshly ground smell, just distinctive and beautiful. The fruit this time showed a bit taut, dark and juicy with cooked meat. Still so good and aging great, and as a 2011, don't make the mistake of dismissing this wine for a vintage bias. Quite the opposite, as the vintage really did wonders for it. Very good again.

This drank solid once again. The aromatics of pepper continue to be such a great signature for this wine, along with the inky color. Yet, under that color is not a large framed wine, but one that is more elegant and well weighted, showing the gifts of the lighter vintage. Love this 11, always have.

14.5% abv. Dark, almost opaque ruby. Aromatically expressive. Blueberries and black pepper dominate a lush, rich and deep palate impression. Lingering aftertaste. Excellent now, but will reward a few more years in the cellar.

Oh nelly, this is wine delivers the goods and stuffing. Big bold savory black fruit, bacon and black olive nose. Palate is full scaled and concentrated. Good acid structure provides framing and freshness. Loads of black fruit and meat. Long, long finish. This is just a baby and should age nicely, but outstanding now.
