Very high acidity. Slight notes of green which have turned into good spicyness. More tertiary then fruit forward at this stage.

A stunningly good old-school Cornas, the Robert Michel Cuvée des Coteaux excels in 1999, bursting from the glass with a rich bouquet of black fruit, tar, black olive and subtle saddle leather. A cuvée based on old vines in Les Chaillots, this is still a young wine, but the tannins have melted away nicely and it has reached a nice stage of early-maturity, with expressive aromatics and a juicy, elegantly expansive and full-bodied palate impression, with nicely fresh acidity. Why Robert Michel's wines languish in comparative obscurity is beyond me: they are stylistically a bit less 'Burgundian' than the quintessentially refined Cornas from the late Noel Verset, but they can be every bit as good in their somewhat more hearty style.

Intriguing nose of cracked Szechuan peppercorn. Immediately soft, suave, feminine palate impression, reminds me of Juge, turning emery board bumpy on the midpalate. Flavors of olive brine, more peppercorn, pork cracklings, reminding me of Verset. Unfortunately marred by significant metallic brett on the finish. Love this style of Cornas and would buy a few more if not for the brett.

The 2006 Robert Michel La Geynale is a marvelous old-school Cornas that is still a good decade away from its drinking window. The wine is still a saturated ruby-black, opening up in the decanter to deliver a classical bouquet of black raspberry, black olive, grilled meats, shoe polish and hot stones. On the palate the wine is very full-bodied, boasting immense volume and extract, and with an ample endowment of refined tannins and a rock solid core and bright acids. The gloriously mineral finish is pure Cornas! I double decanted this wine twice, and followed it over two days, and it only improved. Subsequent bottles have only increased by admiration for this wine. Terrific stuff.

Excellent Cornas, albeit still on the young side. Lots of potential here. Ruby red hue with a nice earthy and peppery palate. Good balance and acidity.

13% abv. Drank blind. Did not guess n.rhone nor syrah. Nose was not giving much at the outset, eventually became perfumed, with a slight greenness. No bacon, no olive, no garrigue… more elegant perhaps but doesn't seem to have as much character as some other n.rhones.

Visually deep and dark, it has a high-definition nose with all the text-book markers, such as granite dust, ground peppers, tar, blackberries and violets. On the palate it's definitely muscular - especially after the pair of lighter reds - yet very elegant, with big black-fruit flavours, excellent freshness and slightly drying, dusty tannins. The peppery, spicy mineral grip lasts for a substantial time and almost leaves us breathless. Ready to drink, yet should keep and develop for several years. Not a wine you'd forget any time soon.

Dinner at Elite (Elite Chinese Restaurant - Los Angeles, CA): I've enjoyed this vintage a lot in the Northern Rhone and this was a fine example (to my tastes). Tons of meaty, earthy, raw Syrah fruit here with some licorice too. A very traditional, rustic Syrah...just loved it.

Serious old school Cornas, taut and firm and really needing another 5-10 years. Very restrained nose, even more so on the palate, though partly this was the small, less than desirable glasses. Lots of inward floral and herbal and gamy notes.

You can drink it and get some enjoyment, but man this really needs to be left alone. Not overly tough and certainly not overdone, but definitely a sturdy/firm wine. Very correct old-school syrah notes more along the lines of rock and herb than black pepper or bacon (not that I don't love that, too). Does not, however, have the depth or complexity of the Geynale.

Ready to drink now.
Compared to previous bottle, this one was slightly more acidic. With food it's well-balanced, but on its own the acidity was slighty too high.
Nonetheless, it's a great wine with a solid core of blackcurrant, crushed strawberries, with earthy and smoky notes.

Heavy sediment, faded brick red; spikey, black fruits, intricate, a whiff of VA; savoury, an attractive edginess, retains fruit, wild, challenging; signs of showing age but time has yet to tame. Provides real interest. Safest to drink to drink sooner rather than later.

A Rosenthal "kisser" (extra $$ and a back label that tells you how great Rosenthal is and absolutely nothing whatsoever about the wine...) this medium to light weight 11 year old has notes of garrigue on the nose and savory on the palate. Its balanced, with notes of fruit and spice and meat.

Tasted about a two and a half years ago, this bottle lacked the intensity of its earlier brethren. Its still nice but not like 90+ nice, just 87-88 nice IMHO.

Very delicate but full at this stage. Characteristic pepper and blackberry on the palate, but lacking some of the meatiness of a N. rhone syrah. Will probably stay in this stage for 5–7 years, but it did not feel restrained and underdeveloped to me. Just a bit feminine and graceful. Good juice, but a hard sell for the price.

Brooding and austere at first, still somewhat closed down, but after a couple of hours in the decanter this opens up really nicely. The fruit is still quite rich and sappy but it's starting to show some of that savoury developed Cornas smoky, meaty and leathery character, particularly with air as the flavours keep getting more tertiary and savoury the longer it's open. Really enjoyable, but I'll leave my other bottles alone for a few more years.

Yep, off the cork pull its just plain rude. Black pepper, smoke, spice, red fruits, very pronounced, borders on volatile to me but doesn't quite fulfill the promise. If yer down for it, its all right there.

Palate has a soft entry with a promising bit of tug on the back end. It was just opened, I am assuming its going to hunker down a bit more. If not, its right at the start of its drinking window. Finish smoothly with a beautiful ringing acid note.

This was a good bottle of Cornas, it had most of what you look for with the earthy meaty flavours with some elegence and decent length, but it just wasn't quite the full article for me, there's nothing wrong with it as such, but just lacked a bit of something.

Cornas tasting @ Jeroboam Club (Bristol): Incredible nose, mature with great depth and complexity. Tell tale violets/lavender and peppery spices. Palate is filled with white pepper, and the remnants of fruit, with very noticeable acidity and still powerful tannic quality. Mr Michel's wines are not for the faint hearted (or impatient). Very enjoyable.

Cornas tasting @ Jeroboam Club (Bristol): Mature nose, with exotic spices, tapenade and a lot of complexity and power. White pepper, grilled meat and lots (and lots) of structure. This is definately in the old style of Cornas. Will last for years, but definately needs air/food/age - probably all 3.
