2009 Sine Qua Non On The Lam

Santa Barbara County White Blend more

Not a wine for classical style wine lovers. This wine is extremely full bodied and rich in flavors. A mouth full of concentrated yellow fruits and honey. Also minerals, anise and well dosed oak. Enormous length! You probably love it or hate it, but as a wine it certainly deserves a score of 95 for the effort. My problem is that I really like classical wines, but also can really appreciate this extremely opulent style. Ready now and the next few years.

1500 Parker Points of Wines (GHT): This was very good. Iced tea in color. The nose has crème brulee, slight glazed pears, and honey. IIRC, there is supposed to be a fair amount of acidity in this vintage, but it still tastes a bit flabby to me. George and I compared it to an 09 Yquem we shared a few weeks ago noting that the Yquem was much crisper and fresher. Its hard to say this wine is tiresome after 15 wines, but almost everyone loved this wine but failed to finish a two ounce pour. That was a combination of the food, the wine and the lateness of the evening. But still, a sip went a long way here.

1500 Parker Points of Wines (GHT): Wonderful wine. Everything I want in a wine, but lacking that elusive (well maybe not on this night) emotion/quality to be 100 for me. That said, this is a wow wine for sure. Black raspberries, charred wood, black pepper, a bit of grilled meat. Ripe, but balanced fruit on the palate. No heat. Not cumbersome. Complex layers of fruit and earth unwind in the glass. Smooth finish. Went well with food.

Some Grilling with the Toronto Cru (Toronto, ON): This pours inky dark. One of the darkest, most glass staining wines I've ever seen. Nose is of smoke, bacon, machine oil, light rubber, blueberry pie filling, blackberry coulis, alcohol, powdered sugar, vanilla extract and sawdust. The palate is structured with opulent ripe sweet tannin and medium minus acid. Clearly polished and immaculately built, but ripe wines like this are difficult for me to rate.

Sweet and pure nose of dark fruit, violet and some chocolate. Touch of mint every now and then. Sleek and sexy in the palate. Deep dark fruit and wonderful texture. For a SQN, I found the finish to be a little rough and alcoholic. But the balance and purity are amazing.

Nice expression of Grenache. Light ruby color. Terrific dusky nose with loads of floral scents. Good tart raspberry and plum palate but somewhat astringent. Nice soft mouthfeel, which became more voluptuous with hours in the glass. Tasty, not special, especially for SQN.

TN: Rhone dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This is a typical big scale and tropical fruit driven SQN white but somehow maintains very good balance. Intense flamboyant sweet tropical fruit nose, pineapple, yellow peach, mango, papaya, pine needle, lilac, mineral and sweet spices. Excellent concentration, dense and chewy, tropical fruit driven palate impression, warm and round and long finish that ends with a bit of heat. As usual, some will love and others will hate. A lot better balance and surprisingly fresh for a ten year old SQN white.

[Brought to John & Linda's. Decanted 3 hours. Served with cheese course.] Gorgeous nose of exotic red fruit, mint, and spice. Medium body. Lush and very appealing. About half the table loves it. Should have been a few degrees cooler. Showing just a touch hot on the finish.

An intense orange color. Beyond gasoline but seems really orange in color.

I find the wine to have sharp acidity which it needs considering it's considerably high residual sugar of almost 20%!!!

At this point the wine is showing fragrances if marmalade, apricots, creme brûlée.
Considering how much sugar is there this wine will hardly go bad in the near future but the more high end freshness will most likely slowly fade to more of a jammy style with time. To me it's drink up now. Regardless of how old desert wines can age I prefer them younger.

The wine could have passed for a blend of LH Viognier or Riesling. I did not pick up the classic lychee or other fragranced I would have expected with a desert Gewürztraminer . Then again this wine was made with grapes grown in hot weather then put into a freezer.

Overall a good to great wine. Certainly concentrated and very sweet.

Almost popped'n'poured and firstly served too warm and then too cold. Basically never had a chance to show what it's really got. It basically tasted the same as a 2012 Carlisle Papa's Block from a month ago except for a slightly more pronounced malolactic note and a tad higher concentration. Look forward to trying it again and next time I'll give it at least a three hour decant and make sure to serve it at proper temperature.

This was popped and poured at a local valley fair. Clear and a very deep garnet red in colour, this wine's nose was filled with candied cherries. The wine was fantastic from the first pour and these cherries were very present in the glass along with some caramel as well. The wine is quite strong on the tannins and the acidity was at a nice level. Although it's quite strong in alcohol percentage, this wine doesn't seem to be "in your face" strong. Overall, this was a wonderful bottle.

Well past its prime. Cork was soaked and crumbled while being pulled. Light brown brick tint with dull flavors of strawberry, cola, eucalyptus, and spice. Slight tangy-sour note present on the nose and finish. Opened with no decant and drank over 2 hours (neither worsened or improved). On a positive note it still retains excellent mouthfeel. Would have been great 5 years ago.

Interesting contrast to the earthy and meaty 2006 Cayuse Syrah. The Dark Blossom was all about bright jammy dark cherry, dark plum fruit. The alcohol is clearly high, so if the fruit ever fades it will be unbalanced. Probably better to drink young.

A terrific effort. I don't have much to add to the other reviews; it's generally true the if you like this style of wine, this is your Petrus. An amazingly dark colour reveals a surprisingly nuanced mouthfeel that is very hard for many comparable winemakers to achieve (granted not many cost as much). On the nose there is so much - dark fruits, some sous-bois, cedar, and burnt embers. For such a young wine, its really well balanced, tannins are present but (as you'd suspect) not overwhelming. Decanted and after an hour it didn't lose a beat. The only small disagreement I have with some of the other posts is I that I don't necessarily think this will get better with age. Easily drink now for 10+yrs but not with the hopes of improving it. Good enough to go right now.

2012 Sine Qua Non In the Abstract

Central Coast White Rhone Blend more

6/6/2015 - jrobs7777 wrote: NR

Tasted side by side with the Kolibiri. My understanding is that this blend contains some Chardonnay. That may explain why I enjoyed this considerably more than the Kolibiri. The Chardonnay cuts the intense oily richness present in the Kolibiri. I really enjoyed the blend of the tropical fruit and orchard fruits. A bit more acidity and balance. That said, there is still a bit of heat here. Better than the Kolibiri, but the SQN Rhone-style whites will never be confused for *actual* Rhone whites and I will never be a big fan of this style.

Not my favorite style. Way too rich and oily, without the acidity level I like with my whites. There is also too much heat for my preference on the back end here. The tropical fruit notes are intense. The nose is the best part here. It's just so out of whack. No balance.

When opened, herbal vegetal and some ripe cassis note on the background. Great fruit concentration. Silly smooth tannins. Long long finish. I was trying to understand this Syrah, definitely different from the Northern Rhone style that I'm more familiar with. Had this with steak.

This is a Grenache Syrah blend. Dark ruby in colour, unusually deep for a rosé. On the nose, it has ripe berry, cranberry, orange peel with a bit herbal spiciness. Served slightly cold at 11-12. Unbelievably rich on the palate, medium to full body, very ripe, good concentration, long finish. At peak. One of the few rosé that can age and develop.

Unusual, powerful and interesting wine. Took about an hour to come into it's own and open up. From their it evolved over the course of the evening with each tasting very complex, pleasurable, yet different. Lovely wine with great balance and lots of secondary and tertiary flavors as it opened. Great structure. Fruit and tannins balance against solid, but not powerful, acids. Ready to drink now.

A baby. This is a young wine that has a long life ahead of it. Huge nose. Inky purple color. Decanted about an hour but feel free to give it 3-4 hours. Just enormous. Flavors coat the mouth and the finish is forever. Classic SQN style - big and powerful yet all in balance. Harmony in a bottle.
