2009 Trimbach Gewurztraminer

Alsace Gewürztraminer more

7/3/2015 - AllRed wrote: 88 points

Lychee, melon and floral qualities. Nright acidity on the palate; lively and focused- not as rich or heavy as some Gewurtraminers can be. Loads of Gewurtz spice on the finish. There's a slight sharp quality on the finish that I find distracting.

2001: A Wine Odyssey — Berserker Offline @ The Palace (The Palace Steakhouse, SF): Summary:
The lesser sibling to Trimbach’s legendary Clos Ste Hune, Cuvee “Freddy" has a reputation as one of the purest varietal expressions in Alsace. The vineyards are the Grand Crus of Geisberg and Osterberg, right in Trimbach’s home town of Ribeauville. Marl-limestone-sandstone soil and steep southern exposure provide conventionally good conditions for great Riesling (unlike the full-limestone soil of Clos Ste Hune). Because the grapes are sourced from two different Grands Crus, Trimbach cannot label CFE as GC, even if they wanted to (which they don’t).

Rich and pleasantly brioche-y out of the bottle, with air this develops into seriously focused, pure, un-botrytized Alsace Riesling. Phenomenally high acidity with elegant varietal character.

Score: Around 9.

Visual:
Clear, day-bright. Light gold with reflections of yellow and straw. Moderate-plus concentration.
No gas or sediment. Diminished tears.

Nose:
Clean, moderate plus intensity nose.
Notes of baked green apple, with emphasis on “baked” - some brioche / autolytic notes (possible lees stirring?). Warm stone. Faint lime pith note.
As this opened up, some lemon (confected) and slight petrol/pool-toy (TDN) emerged. Notable (though not especially surprising) is the absence of any hints of botrytis in a Grand Cru bottling of such ripeness. This may be stylistic (the Osterberg and Geisberg GC vineyards are steep, with good winds that stave off rot). Also 2001 was cooler and more classical than the exceptional 2000 - perhaps it wasn’t a vintage conducive to botrytis.
Overall still youthful with some signs of development, especially towards the end of the evening (the brioche aromas blew off a bit, revealing more varietal character underneath).
This wine has some complexity already, but will develop even more with age.

Palate:
Dry (<3g RS, possibly bone dry), medium bodied with moderate alcohol ~12.5%? [yes—12.5%].
More baked apple yeastiness mid-palate, with some citrus tones and hints of warm stones.
No phenolic bitterness. Solidly high acid (very clean, balancing tart malic with strong tartaric character).
Phenomenally balanced in a classic dry riesling style.
The finish is moderately long, with balanced fruit, secondaries, and acidity all the way.

This light yellow, off-dry white has an impressive nose of citrus, saffron, apple and candied ginger. Light-bodied, slightly sweet and with mouthwatering acidity, it delivers flavors which mirror the nose and stays solid in the middle. The wine's alcohol is a non-factor and the crisp finish is medium-to-long. This sleek wine should show well for 3-4 more years. Drink now-2019.

Exuberant richness with a refreshing lift. Gorgeous marmalade and dried orange peel/grapefruit nose with more tropical fruits behind a cloak of chalky minerality, This balances the fruit and floral nicely, but definitely leans more to the fruit. The front palate has a moderate unctuousness, but the finish is lean, clean, and beautiful. Such bright acidity means you can have complexity and refreshment on a hot day. Delicious.

Appearance: Clear wine with a pale lemon colour.

Nose: Clean nose with a medium+ intensity. This wine is developing.

Strong petrol aromas dominate the nose. Beneath this is a more pleasant layer of grapefruit, ripe pear and a stony minerality.

Palate:
Alcohol: Medium
Acidity: High
Body: Medium
Intensity: Medium+
Finish: Long

Grapefruit, green apple and lemon sing out here - a real blend of freshness and youth that is masked by the petrol on the nose. Under it all is the same stony minerality detected on the nose, bringing an austere note that nicely balances the fresh, young fruit. The finish is long and very pleasant.

Outstanding quality Alsace Riesling. This wine can be drunk now but is clearly developing and will continue to do so for many more years.

Tasted at the winery. A bit darker than the Gewurtz VT from Trimbach in the same vintage. Orange notes, smoke, honey, but not honeysuckle. It's a tad low on acid for the sugar level for my taste. Still, a nice wine. €113 at the winery.

Tasted at the winery. Nice wine. Smoky, with notes of honey. No petrol. The acidity nicely balances the body, with a residual sugar of 75 but it comes off as only moderately sweet on the palate. Should age 20+ years.

Tasted at the winery. A nice Gewurtz, with a bit of smokiness, perfumey. No petrol (which at Trimbach is mainly a Riesling aroma.) A reasonable pricepoint at €30.65 at the winery.

Tasted at the winery. Enjoyable. This is fairly similar to their 2012 P. Gris Reserve, but a touch more extracted in color, body and flavor (and 60% higher price, at €24.25). More perfume, but a bit less acid. It's a tad sweeter than the completely dry Reserve P. Gris, but still not really what I think of as off dry. This sweetness will go nicely with smoked or oily fishes, although otherwise may be a bit harder to pair.

Tasted at the winery. Loved this wine. The best pricepoint of any of their line, IMHO (at €14.25). Drinking well now, but this will show best still in a couple of more years. Aged in cement. Dry apricots and other dried fruits, not as acidic as their Rieslings as typical of P. Gris. This wine is great as an aperitif but will also pair with a wide range of food courses too.

Tasted at the winery. Very mineral. Flavors are still melding. This wine is still too young to show well. The Cuvée Frédéric-Émile from the same year was showing just as well at a fraction of the cost. Not impressed with all the critics loving this wine at this pricepoint (€133), but maybe it just needs time.

Tasted at the winery, from their "Reserve Personnelle" series -- a step up from their Reserve line. Moderately light in color and body, with vibrant acidity. Strong mineral notes, citrus. Aged in steel, no oak. Grapes come from chalkier soil, not the wineries more common limestone. The acidity means it drinks better with food: fish, cream sauces, fatty meats like sausage. €41 at the winery.

Tasted at the winery. Their low end riesling, called their "Classic" series. Very light, almost clear in color. Fresh acidity, balanced, with some mildly-green apple/pear and some citrus notes. Should show well 3-4 years (so by 2016). €11.40 at the winery.

Typical ripe riesling nose with steel, petrol, apricot, nectarine and jasmine characters. Eight years in bottle have made some of the flavours a touch honeyed as well. The palate has high acidity, a medium body and brings new stoney, overripe lemon and slight toffee flavours with a long finish. Ready to drink now, but will develop more.

Color: Golden yellow with red reflections. On the nose not that expressive for a Gewurz. Lichee comes to mind. Gingerbread, too. On the palate however it is indeed expressive. At the same time it is a lean wine and not that fatty like many other Gewurz. The aromas are consistent with the nose. 14% alc but not noticeable.
