Absolutely brilliant in the glass. Two exact bottles in bouquet and palate. Definitely peaking but the core of fruit and the leather and cocoa secondaries are well-matched to mature tannins an some acidity - not a lot. Great pairing with grilled striploin and shallot reduction.

Raspberry, blue fruits, redskin confection. Pepper and spice. Drying tannin. Acid and/or alcohol sticks out a bit, overall a bit hot.

Interesting wine. Usually Dead Arm is concentrated and rich. This bottle was less so. The fruit did not come through, and the bottle remained tight even though it was decanted for at least 2 hours before drinking. It was still nice but not as outstanding as this wine normally is. I assume this was bottle variation. Will have to see how the next bottle goes.

Outstanding bottle of wine, and so sad that it was my last 2004. So much depth and pure pleasure – was really singing. Remarkably reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux. All I have left is a couple of 2006s, and they just don't even compare.

Puissant et noir.
Fruit noir à outrance avec de la fumée.
Pas mauvais, belle matière et fruit de bon goût mais hyper concentré.

1996 d'Arenberg d'Arry's Original Shiraz/Grenache

McLaren Vale Red Rhone Blend more

6/26/2015 - rmarkey Likes this wine: 92 points

Excellent, classic, 14.5% alc.
Colour: red berry, brick red, slight browning
Bouquet: aged Grenache fruit dominates - floral, chocolate, jammy character, licorice
Palate: Shiraz more dominant on palate. Developed fruit, licorice and tar, boot polish, spicey, but with a floral lift - a bit like Shiraz with Viognier. Full bodied, big soft tannins, long clean finish.

Game of Rhones (Carriageworks, Redfern): aromas of cream, peach, stone fruit, green apple. On the palate it's quite drying, a little short and a touch of alcohol warmth. Lacks much flavour or length for me. Meh

A completely different experience again. This bottle jammed with fruit and sweet up front. Lovely glossy fruit, with olives and bitter herbs and a long dry finish. Reminiscent enough of the d'Arenberg Dead Arm bottlings that I picked up the bottle again to check I'd opened the right one. Bottle variation! (91-92)

I was surprised at how balanced this wine was. Tannins were smooth with moderate acidity. It improved over the 2 hours it was enjoyed. Not an over extracted Aussie fruit bomb at all.

Very good cab, still very primary and berry driven with some oak treatment, but not without a point of balance that I enjoyed with some grilled lamb. I think this has a few years ahead of it but is just as enjoyable right now. But you need to pair it with a steak to deal with quite noticeable tannins at this stage.

The wine has medium acidity. It smells like cool/menthol, tobacco, lemon and black currant (cassis). The body is medium. The wine finishes long. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. The wine has smooth texture.

Clear, blackish purple with dark pink rim, widely dispersed even-flowing tears medium thickness. Plenty of fine sediment from the first glass onwards - don't look in the mirror!.
Clean, med- intensity, aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries, slight anise, overwhelming fruit and alcohol.
Dry, med+ body, need acidity, full tannins, full alcohol, this is a fruit-forward wine masked by bouts of alcohol, tannins and surprising acidity. Normally a hug fan of D'Arenberg wines, this was a little disappointing. Further tastes of pu'er tea, black pepper, beetroot, meaty, and dark black currants. Medium finish

Drank this bottle today at New Ubin Seafood with a close colleague.

Paired this with foie gras with soft boiled eggs, ribeye steak, potato wedges and fried rice.

Easy to drink with elegance and finesse. Structure holding up very well with a long finish. Spice is evident on the palate with lots of plums, dark cherries, oak and liquorice.

Drinking very well now with very little breathing needed.

One bottle stores at room temp. Taking a while to open, first sip was like drinking jam. Deep raisin, punctuated with alcohol. With more airing, cherry emerges. Tannin still there, but softening. Hopeful that cellar bottles will be in better form.
