9/13/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 88 pointsRetail $25. A little hot on the nose. Some red berry and vanilla. On the palate, good fruit and a bit of complexity but a tad short on the finish. Very Good 87-89 Points. |

2009 La Rochelle Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlandsmore |
9/13/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 92 pointsRetail $38. Rich raspberry and vanilla. This is my style of CA Pinot. Great fruit and acidity with balance and body. Excellent. 91-93 Points. |

2011 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot NoirWillamette Valley more |
9/13/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 90 pointsRetail $35. A bit awkward at first but with air some nice fruit on the nose. Great mouth feel with an earthiness that was lacking in the CA wines. Screaming for a pork chop. Very Good to Excellent. 89-91 Points. |

2011 La Crema Pinot Noir Montereymore |
9/13/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 86 pointsRetail $23. Black cherry kool-aid on the nose. A bit thin on the palate but the black cherry really comes through. Nicely rounded-out finish. Fair QPR. Good 85-87 Points. |

NV Domaine Ste. Michelle Brut RoséColumbia Valley Champagne Blend more |
9/9/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 84 pointsRetail $10. These were on sale at the PLCB for $8 so I picked up a few to have around when I was in the mood for a sparkler. Not bad, but nothing really to get all excited over, either. It does, however, meet the basic criterion of my motto: “If it doesn’t sparkle, it doesn’t matter.” Good. 83-85 Points. |

NV Soutiran Champagne Grand Cru Brut RoséPinot Noir more |
9/9/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Does not like this wine: NRRetail $50. I was worried about the other Soutiran I had and finished it off last week. I thought I should give the rosés a try as well. It looks like I better finish these off in the short term as well–little sparkle and overly rich. I am not quite sure what was going on with this bottle. Not Rated. |

2009 Clos Pepe Estate Chardonnay Barrel FermentedSta. Rita Hills more |
9/9/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 92 pointsRetail $25. I had to go back to the Midwest for a funeral this week and I asked my wife to throw something in the fridge for when I got back. She asked what I wanted and I told her just to pick something and this is what she chose (yeah, I married up). My last note from April still rings true: The nose reminds me of a really nice Meursault–a bit of fruit and vanilla with just a hint of oak. On the palate loads of lemon zest and even apricot with just the right amount of oak. This wine is superb and will continue to improve. Excellent. 91-93 Points. |

NV Pommery Champagne Pink POPChampagne Blend more |
8/26/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Does not like this wine: 78 pointsRetail $14. I got these a while ago from the PLCB–there are four 187ml bottles in a box that comes with their own individual straws. At the time, instead of charging me $14 per bottle, they charged me $14 per box. I thought it was the deal of the century. Well, it turns out the wine is all rather tired, with little fizz, and not much to warrant even another word. Oh, and the straws all seem to have holes in them. Another stellar job by the PLCB…. Average. 77-79 Points. |

2010 Martin Pasler Pinot BlancNeusiedlersee more |
8/26/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 88 pointsRetail $18. I continue to be impressed with this wine, particularly for the price. Here are my previous notes, which still ring true: "Bright and tart with great grapefruit and Granny Smith apple. There is lip puckering acidity that balances out the fruit. This is a nice aperitif, patio, light seafood wine that is quite refreshing. Very Good. 87-89 Points." |

2012 Couly-Dutheil Chinon Rosé René CoulyCabernet Franc more |
8/26/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 86 pointsRetail $20. I am a fan of pretty much all things Chinon and even though the Couly-Dutheil house has gone through some upheaval recently, the wines are still solid. Strawberry and watermelon on the nose of this 100% Cabernet Franc, with a little bit of tartness on the palate. I am a big fan of Couly-Dutheil and I also opened this wine after the gaggle of birthday party goers cleared out so I am certainly biased., but this is a really nice rosé that would go well with a host of options. For me, today, it went best with some peace, quiet, and my computer keyboard (drinking it now). Good to Very Good 85-87 Points. |

NV Domaine Chandon Étoile RoséCalifornia Champagne Blend more |
8/26/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 87 pointsRetail $35. We popped this open after a rather unremarkable meal at a restaurant in our neighborhood (Fare) the food was, well, fair, and the service was poor (we will not be back). We had brought this along to open at a BYO in the neighborhood, but it was unexpectedly closed. So we lugged this to Fare and then back home, which we promptly opened after the kids were in bed. Nice red fruit nose and a tart palate, this is a solid sparkler, but I am not sure if it merits its “champagne-like” tariff. Very Good. 86-88 Points. |

NV Brice Champagne Grand Cru Brut BouzyChampagne Blend more |
8/26/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 88 pointsRetail $40. We had tickets to a luxury box at the Phillies game and we decided to tailgate beforehand (tailgating before a baseball game seems a little forced, but I rallied). Bought some pâté and popped this cork. A bit tired and just slightly oxidized, but I actually like that vibe. We showed South Philly how to tailgate right (in our Prius). Very Good. 87-89 Points. |

8/23/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: NRKaty pulled out a platter of cheese accompanied by a Flowers Camp Meeting Ridge Chardonnay. The wine and the cheese practically melted in the mouth–I am not sure if I have had such a wonderful wine/cheese experience (outside of France–let’s not get too crazy). |

2009 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Trenton EstateRussian River Valley more |
8/23/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: NRDeb brought out a bottle of 2009 Joseph Swan Trenton Estate Pinot Noir. She said that she heard me mention it before, so she was anxious to try it. (Deb if you are reading this,I would like to mention the Domaine de la Romanée Conti.) A bit fruitier and darker than the Hirsch, as expected, but every bit as tasty. |

2009 Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir San Andreas FaultSonoma Coast more |
8/23/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: NR2009 Hirsch Vineyards San Andreas Pinot Noir, which was bold, but balanced, with great cherry fruit and plenty of acidity. Outstanding. |

NV Beau Joie Champagne Special Cuvée Brut RoséChampagne Blend more |
8/23/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: NRI had never heard of, much less tasted the champagne before, but it certainly made quite the impression. The bottle was, well, let’s just say unique. I am not quite sure if a bottle can “inspire” you to commit various random acts that I will not enumerate here, but there is certainly a medieval type of torture going on. The wine itself was fantastic–rich and full with a great Pinot backbone. It was so good, in fact, that I really questioned the packaging since we spent far more time talking about the bottle than we did about the wine. |

8/23/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: NRWe started off the pre-meal festivities with a sublime 2009 Walter Hansel Cahill Lane Chardonnay, which paired beautifully with the rousing game of post-beach go-fish with my four-year-old son. |

NV Yves Ruffin Champagne Premier Cru Extra BrutChampagne Blend more |
8/19/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 91 pointsRetail $45? This was available from Last Bottle and I wish I had bought more. Lemon and yeast on the nose. Great acidity and pop with a yeastiness that I really love in champagne. Outstanding. 90-92 Points. |

2012 Syncline Grenache Blanc Boushey VineyardYakima Valley more |
8/19/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 87 pointsRetail ? Some good friends just recently brought this back from their trip out West. Lemony nose that harkens a Muscadet. On the palate the fruit is a bit muted but is quite tart and bright. Ad it warmed up, more grapefruit and honeydew. Very Good. 87-89 Points. |

2003 Matrot-Wittersheim Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce-sous-le-Bois RougePinot Noir more |
8/12/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 87 pointsRetail $35. 2003 was an extremely hot year across France, causing winemakers all kinds of difficulty, particularly in Burgundy. This wine was made more in the “new world” style of big fruit up front with not as much acidity holding it all together. An enjoyable quaff, but in no way is it a “typical” Burgundy. Very Good. 86-88 Points. |

NV Gosset Champagne Grand Rosé BrutChampagne Blend more |
8/6/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 94 pointsLast, Philippe poured us the Gosset Grand Rosé (58% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 7% Red Pinot Noir). A delicate salmon pink in the glass, but a powerful nose of fresh strawberries. On the palate, those strawberries danced on the tongue, noticeable rounder and softer than the others, but I thought this might be the most versatile of the four–this could handle even the most ambitious of meals. Outstanding. 93-95 Points. |

NV Gosset Champagne Brut Grande RéserveChampagne Blend more |
8/6/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 93 pointsNext came one of my favorite champagnes, the Gosset Grande Réserve (43% Chardonnay, 42% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier), which had a noticeably darker color in the glass than the BdB and the Millésime, with aromas of ripe red fruit and a touch of baked bread. On the palate, I recognized it immediately: those red berries persisted on the palate with great depth. The acidity on the back end held it all together wonderfully and ensured a long finish. Outstanding. 92-94 Points. |

2004 Gosset Champagne Brut Grand MillésimeChampagne Blend more |
8/6/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 92 pointsThe 2004 Gosset Grand Millésime (55% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir) followed with lighter nose–more citrus and vanilla than red fruit. On the palate, the wine seems like just a baby with bright acidity and minerality, green apple and even a bit of pineapple. The wine is great now, but could use a bit of time in the cellar to develop some more complexity of flavor since the vibrancy dominates. Excellent. 91-93 Points (Potentially 94-96 Points). |

NV Gosset Champagne Brut Grand Blanc de BlancsChardonnay more |
8/6/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 91 pointsGosset Grand Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay). Normally, I am not a big fan of the Blanc de Blancs style, but this was certainly an exception. Mineral and floral on the nose, with a bit of apricot, on the palate, this was quite impressive: balanced and well structured with a depth that I normally do not pick up in BdB. Excellent. 90-92 Points. |
