Dark ruby core with brick rim, subtle nose of grilled meat, dried cherries, brown sugar and Asian spice, round and warm on the attack with dried cherries, soda, iron, resolved tannins and plenty of spice box, finish is extremely long but not complex with stewed plum, earth, mushroom and mulling spices

Nice oldish burg. Quite a slight wine, not much stuffing, but all in order. I'd guess it's early 80s.

Fathers 60th Birthday; 8/31/2014-9/1/2014: Another old wine, another mature nose. The familiar leather, tobacco and prunes goes hand in hand with boiled vegetables. But there is also some funky earthy aromas as well as sour cherries. Good, almost sweet fruit on the palate, distinct acidity and dryness. Warm finish. There is still life here!

Decanted for an hour before drinking. Brown tinge at the rim, and initial quiet flavours made me wonder if this had gone past its best. Bouquet of something damp and mushroomy. When drunk with food (lamb with merguez spices) this opened out into a warm soft mouthful of fruit flavours, mainly raspberry. Still tart enough to be vibrant and give the lie to my first fears about the wine's age, but also with a element of sweetness. A little tannin, but as a supporting note rather than a distraction. Very enjoyable - as she said "this is the nicest wine we've had for some time"

Unexpectedly dark tawny. Fully mature with caramelised plum fruits. a layer of refreshing acid over the top - seemingly separated from the wine - keeps it just fresh. Thick and rich - there must be some syrah in here.

Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red center with tan/yellow rims. I was told the bottle had a 4 cm or so fill. The high intensity nose of roasted meat, cherries, rhubarb, and brown spices was fascinating.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied, with light, rounded tannin and good length. While just a touch "stewed" in the mouth, this was still a very fun wine to drink.

Drink ASAP.

A great value little wine.
Juicy and ripe, but with good tannin and structure.
The primary plummy fruit was nicely integrated into the oaky vanilla in the mid palate. Followed by a soft ripe finish.
Full and tasty.

This bottle had been acquired about a year ago at an estate sale and given to me. It was opened with a group to taste it. We did not decant due to its age and not knowing what would happen. Well, let me tell you, this took a couple of minutes to open up and was then very enjoyable. It is clearly a very old Chardonnay but had an amazing amount of fruit left which was combined with a hint of dust or mushroom. In retrospect I think it could have stood decanting as the wine actually continued to open up over the next half hour (at which point it was gone) and had enough body to stand up to the air. All who tasted this were glad they did.

This was an Avery's les Greves bottling. I've had some mixed experiences with Avery's - this bottle's condition and fill were very good. The cork was wet and moved easily in the bottle neck, but was extracted in one piece. Deep garnet, healthy appearing wine that was somewhat metallic at the outset needing some air. It was vigorous with plenty of body and calmed down to reveal fine earth, berries, forest and more. It developed a pleasing sweetness and was well matched to coq au vin. Not the most complex '64, but a nice showing for this appellation.

level was to mid neck, but cork wasn't in great condition as it was very loosely in place and almost fell inside the bottle when uncorking. color was surprisingly deep, a garnet purple. primary bouquet was of fruit, but a secondary scent more of mildew was noticeable. flavor was amazingly balanced, with some fruit and a lot of minerals and earth, but mid-finish a bit moldy. the finish was actually quite nice, and relatively long and balanced. unfortunately, the faint putrid smell and taste detracted materially from what would otherwise have been a wonderful old Cote-de-Beaune.

Apparently this is from the d'Arenberg stable. I cant say I'm surprised, this is really very good McLaren Vale Shiraz for £9. The nose is open and full of plums with a hint of blackcurrant. The palate is quite spicy but very smooth, liquorice and a hint of leather to finish.

Kruger's 75th (Corsair): From magnum. This was a "prank wine" that turned out to be stunning, surprising, and all around one of the best wine experiences I've ever had! Everyone commented that they would have guessed a mid to late '80's Grand Cru burg. Still had an amazing garnet colour. The aromatics were dynamite right off the bat. Bright berries, strawberry, rasp, intermingled with baking spices and herbs. Slight dill. The mouthfeel was elegant and seamless. There were an array of ripe fruits still offered. As time went on, the fruit fleshed out turning to darker berries and the spiciness really came through. Blackberries with earth and amazing acid structure throughout. Thanks Colin, this was quite the surprise.

Bordeaux Tasting at MHP (MHP): Surprisingly good. Nose of salty sea, plums and red berries. Fruity, inoffensive palate that is actually recognisable as Bordeaux - has some touches of the classic tobacco and spiced wood. Easy drinking and reasonable value, though I probably won't buy this again.
