I opened my first ever bottle with friends last night for dinner. One of whom only drinks shiraz, so it was going to an interesting experience for us all.
It was white.
It had alcohol.
It had minimal body.
Minimal nose
Nothing that would have suggested that it was a white shiraz.
I will use my 5 remaining bottles as a curiosity in various wine tastings I facilitate as a talking point until they are used.
the 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape that I bought yesterday morning at Costco was a far more interesting and enjoyable shiraz that we all enjoyed.

Retail $35. Very Heavy bottle (892g; 1lb 15.4oz). 100% Shiraz. I have only had a few sparkling reds over the years and they have all been a bit of a novelty. Not that they were not serious wines but there are not a ton of them so the reference points are limited. This is a dark, even very dark, magenta with plenty of blackberry and plum. The palate is dark, fruity, and both tart and a bit brooding, if that is possible? Again, not a ton of reference points here, but this is certainly a fun, pleasant quaff. I served it chilled and that seemed to work and would be great as an apéritif or with a charcuterie board.

Aired this out for a couple of hours and did improve quite a bit. Excellent pairing with lamb chops. Big nose of crushed dark berries, violets and pommel horse sweat. Generous mouth of mulberries, aniseed and tart crust. Medium length finish of charred matchsticks and good acid.

Inky pastille fruits and olive tapenade, mulberry laced with a dash of menthol, and some complex, well-integrated woody savouriness flow along to a long, cool finish. Vibrant and retaining elements of primary fruit, I can see this still being attractive for another 5 years.

Two hour slow-ox before dinner. Bright cranberry/choke cherry fruit profile with notes of white pepper, plum and violet. Acid-forward and tart, nicely complimenting roasted beef and root veg. Alone the wine was slightly thin and the acid outpaced the fruit. Abrupt finish. Has not improved since last bottle. Drink freely and preferably with food.

Strawberries, raspberries, roses, forest floor, fantastic intensity & length. The seconds half of the bottle was definitely better and it kept getting better and better with time in the glass. I would recommend a decant(possibly?) Second time with this wine didn’t disappoint. 97

Pale colour with hints of golden hues - no hint of the grape skin colour.
Pear, apple, stone fruits on the nose.
Palate has primary notes of pear, green apple skin, melon and white nectarine.
Nice complexity of slithered almonds and nuttiness in the mid-palate.
A light bodied, dry wine with good freshness and acid drive making the palate linear.

Wine Bros: A Study of Syrah (Cowford Chophouse): For many this was an introduction to the style. We had tried to get the Rockford but alas it seems to never make it to the US which is unfortunate. This wine is quite enjoyable though. Fruity and still fresh with the bubbles. Enjoyable wine.

A fairly straight forward wine that is chunky and clunky.

Still a lovely ruby red, the nose tells you everything you know about this wine - fruits blazing, cedar, a touch of mushroom and sulphur. Body is a bit of a rough ride, chewy and a somewhat patchy fruit quality with notes of mocha.. Still fine tannin with a reasonable degree of freshness with an alcoholic finish.

Drink now to 5+ years.

92 pts
