2012 Blue Fin Pinot Noir

The color is not bad, and has that light cherry-like hue one would expect from a California Pinot; The color, however, is where the virtues end. Strong strawberry aroma with little else, almost tantamount to sniffing fruit juice. High sugars and unripe fruitiness dominate the front-end of the palate, with strawberries maintaining their dominance over the drinking experience; a mild tannic earthiness makes its presence felt on the finish but fails to save the wine from tasting like one would expect from its price point. I've had worse cheap wines in the under $10 category, but there are many better ones out there too.

Soft and slightly sweet style, perhaps more for cocktailing than for food. Fig on the borderline between ripe and overripe, as well as vaguely tropical notes. Little if any oak influence. Not much acidity or finish, and I get a touch of bitterness; served cold enough it's fine for what it is.

On the roller coaster. Slight petrol aroma and flavor right around the wine. It didn't turn me off as it was paired with a strongly marinated king salmon. Light sweet yellow tree fruit and medium plus weight.

The bottle variation is mind boggling. This bottle was terrific and varietially correct. This bottle is a super value but after three bottles, none remotely similar, it's tough to recommend.

Got some petrol notes which leads you to believe this is a Riesling. Sweet pear flavor and not enough acid to balance.

Decent chardonnay for the money. I still favor Lindeman's for a value Chardonnay.

This was formerly JW Morris before Bronco decided to end that label. Pleasant lychee, stone fruit, and citrus aromas. Sweet and semi-balanced by some tartness.

Would not have ever guessed pinot. Best served chilled, outdoors on a hot day, and described as table wine (not as a varietal).

Quaffable and only $4. I wouldn't serve this to impress your friends but its acceptable. Decent Chardonnay fruit profile but a little soft. Needs some acid to move it off the low 80s.

It took a little time in the glass to get some air, but eventually this wine emerged with the flavor profile of Petit Sirah. At first, this wine is so young, I could not perceive any of the typical Petit Sirah flavors. By the bottom of the glass, I conclude this wine is well worth the 4 buck price tag. Has a bit of that glass staining deep purple color. Eventually, the nose shows a funky, bramble, graphite enhanced black fruit aroma. The fruit is a little simple and not particularly intense vanilla and tree sap enhanced light boysenberry and blueberry. Some young raw acid. Little if any oak. Astringent finish. The more air it gets, the better it tastes.

The Blue Fin Pinot Noir was so well received that I decided to try their 2012 Viognier. I was afraid this would prove to be something syrupy sweet and flabby, and am glad to be wrong. This is not textbook Viognier. The nose actually has the smell of Granny Smith apple acidity with less floral notes than I expected. There is a bitter, but not all the way decimating, start, to the honeysuckle influenced peach, pear, and pineapple fruit. That bitter flavor extends through the mid palate in a just cracked walnut shell sort of way. As you drink down the glass, this wine grows on you in a raw, but tasty way. Honey and acid on the finish.

Faint yellow. It doesn't follow the profile of a viognier, more like a sauvignon blanc with sweet tree fruit and not a lot of acid. Enjoyable none the less. Perfect sangria mixer.

OK, the label says PS but this has to be a field blend. Super dark as expected and dark black fruit flavor but there's some Zinfandel notes dominating the backend. Catching a bit of cigar box on the nose. Not bad, really. Used it in the wardens chicken cacciatore which added just the right amount of sweetness and color. Still holding together as you might expect for petite sirah so it'll last until 2015.

I've been burned so many times by inexpensive grocery store Pinot's that I walked past this one at Trader Joes for over a month. My loss. This is by no means awesome Pinot, but it is Pinot. The color is clearish burgundy. The nose has a Pinot like plum and wet rotting leaves aroma. The fruit is on the simple side, but easily identifiable for the varietal with blackberry and plum with some hints of red fruit. There is a cinnamon spiciness on the roof of the mouth very commendable for a wine at this price point. A touch of vanilla with cocoa powder and light tannins on the finish.

Pretty basic pinot noir. Very fruity- cranberry? strawberry? Pretty tart. No finish to speak of. Pours and tastes very, very light. Really like a step down from a Rose. Drinks more like a summer BBQ wine than a winter evening sipper. I suppose a decent pinot in the 5$ range would be more of a miracle than Christmas can provide.......Second tasting.....I do get a peppery note at the end. Still super light, but a more interesting finish than I remember.

Doesn't have a particularly standout bouquet. Very average tasting. Somewhat smooth. Overall, a pretty average wine without any real character. Probably best to buy another Syrah.
