Presenta un precioso color entre cobre claro con tendencia anaranjada. Aroma intensísimo, frutos secos, miel, nueces, naranja, hierbas etcétera. La boca de entrada es alcohólica, lo que de entrada me recuerda a una mañana como algo por el estilo. Sin embargo ya en boca del arco desaparece y se equilibra completamente. There is a freshness to this wine that begins on the nose and suggests pine forests and sand dunes, almost Manzanilla like. It's delightful to drink. Served cool with roast almonds and salted olives it offers plenty to keep you interested. Saline and fresh but with great depth and ridiculously long on the finish. Polish. Orange peel. Nut. Beautiful, burnt caramel. I want to sip this slowly but I want more after every drop passes my lips. This coats my palate and asks questions. Put in a barrel half a lifetime ago. If I think what I was doing then and what I have done since, well, the mind boggles. As I loved and learnt and tried and won and lost this wine has sat and aged and grown. All these things I think as I sip this fine, aged Oloroso and it leaves a ringing in my ears. Palate is striking for the saline undertow and has a prominent acidic character that may be too much for some (like myself - not at all an experienced sherry drinker). While not my personal cup of tea it was understandable why this wine has impressed so many here - there is a wide breadth of flavours on offer and while one has to be a lover of the acetaldehydic profile, it is clear that these come together in a complex whole. Long final. I bought 3 sherries after deciding I needed to at least explore this area of winemaking. This was my second and so far my preferred bottling. We only finished half a bottle or so, and looking forward to seeing how I feel about it when I get to the remainder. But unless something changes I don't feel I will become an avowed sherry drinker. Hazelnut comes and goes, orange peel too, whilst a reticent caramel remains always, subtle yet enduring. A plethora of tastes, no not tastes, a plethora of feelings. A log fire in winter. Burnt wood. Fresh spring tides. Summer and sand. Maybe autumn and leaves and the last vestiges of warmth before the weather turns. All kinds going on! This is not an unyielding wine. It has so much to it but it keeps giving way and letting all of its various splendours have their moments. It let's you pick your focus in any given mouthful. It offers everything up and allows you to choose the direction you head off in. There is freshness and salinity allied to a nutty, complex depth. All hands on deck, bosun, hoist the jolly roger! The colour is golden-amber but surprisingly bright. A good sign. Bugger the colour, though, because you don't really need to look as the aromas come clambering out of the glass like a boarding party with a glint in their eye, having heard that not only be there loot aplenty aboard but also maidens, willing and able. Aaaaarrrrrrhhhh! The nose is a very potent brew of roasted nuts, toffee, spice, something salty/sea-spray like - I find it intoxicating. The palate is quite bold, a touch astringent at first but finishing smooth and elegant and the length is truly astonishing. Intensity is definitely in 10 cities and full gonzo. Good as the palate is at first, it is after you swallow that the after-taste turns this into something extraordinary. To be honest, 97 points seems a bit mean but perhaps I can justify it by pointing to a slight lack of delicacy on the fore-palate. I do feel this is a bit like criticising a Mercedes Benz E class for being on the large side. You get layer after layer of taste and texture and it is a wine that appeals both to the senses but especially to the mind. This was magnificent with Jamon Iberico and cheeses and various nibbly bits (they call them Tapas). Absolute heaven and character combined. That makes it better than a Merc E Class. In case you are interested, as I have found out, this is a very rare beast indeed. As I understand it starts its life with the usual Sherry grapes and is made in the usual way for Fino and/or Amontillado, but in the process a tiny percentage of barrels lose their flor and start to age oxidatively as Oloroso does. So, what you get is an unusual combination of the characters of both Amontillado and Oloroso. In this we get the best of both worlds and by Jove it is good. Saca of November 2017 (II/2017), bottle #992 of total 3000 bottles. Luminous pale golden-to-straw yellow color. Classic, slightly pungent aldehydic and subtly sweet-toned nose with aromas of waxy richness, some evolved nutty tones, a little bit of sorrel, light juicy notes of slightly wizened peach, a hint of green apple slices and a touch of green almonds. The wine is dry, somewhat aldehydic and subtly evolved on the palate with a moderately full body and complex flavors of sorrel and green almonds, some tangy notes of aldehydic sharpness, a little bit of ripe peachy stone fruit, light nuances of beeswax, a hint of mushroomy funk and subtly oxidative touch of caramel. Typical of Sherry, the rather soft acidity feels only medium, but still the wine comes across as firm and balanced due to its combination of slightly aged concentration and tangy aldehydic character. The finish is round, waxy and very lengthy with complex flavors of beeswax, some peachy fruit, a little bit of slivered almonds, light aldehydic notes of sorrel and green apple, a hint of mushroomy funk and an evolved touch of caramel. A beautiful, fine and harmonious Fino that comes across as more rich and evolved than your typically fresh, bright and tangy Fino or Manzanilla - there is more sense of weight and concentration here, and the prolonged aging has added some lovely nuances of caramel and beeswax to the flavors. This is not as evolved as, say, Manzanilla Pasada, nor is the wine as oxidative as an Amontillado, as the wine has been aged under a flor never oxidatively, but the style is still more developed and fine-tuned than what you'd expect from a Fino. I can see some people might not like this kind of mellow, layered style of wine if they are looking for a bright and zippy Fino, but if one wants depth, richness and complexity of a developed Sherry, yet with the lightness and freshness of a Fino, this wine is in its class of its own. This bottle might not be as impressive as the VOS and VORS bottlings of Bodegas Tradición, but this is a wine that can and will challenge most Finos out there with its finesse, depth and complexity. (Chicago, IL): 1879/2400, L2/19. PX is pretty much some of the most distinctive stuff in the world of wine. There's no mistaking raisin juice concentrate. This is incredibly thickly textured from the sugar (the bottle is noticeably heavier than the other three 750s despite the shape being entirely the same). This pours without a sound. Incredibly sweet, this is counterbalanced by a strong bitter note that serves to help cut through all the sweetness. Notes of licorice, molasses, and star anise, there's an amaro-like note here.
