This is flat-out delicious. Lots to talk about, but I didn't take formal notes. It went well with chili, though. It's probably hits its plateau.

According to WA this is: 50% Monastrell, 25% Malbec, and 25% Petit Verdot aged for 13 months in French and American oak. Not long after I bought it, WA added the following to its on line review (which gave it 96 points) "(Note: Compaints based on different bottlings from what Mr. Miller tasted make us suspicious of what happened at the winery. Until further notice, readers are advised to bypass this wine.)"

Because I bought it before this came out, I had 4 bottles, which I promptly forgot about. I brought it to a tasting and explained that our expectations should be low. Turned out to be a very good to almost great wine. I don't know how my remaining three bottles will be, but I am going to drink them this year.

Seems to be in a sweet spot for drinking now. Decanted each bottle and that helped open up nicely. Dark fruit and leather with perhaps a bit of tobacco. Long finish with nice fruit in balance with acid; not overly tannic.

Third Thursday blind tasting group - Mourvedre's (Mike's) (11/20/2014): Hands down, one of the worst wines I've ever tried. I hated this when poured blind. I tried revisiting it a few times later after it was unveiled to see if some redeeming qualities may have developed with air, but nope. To call this a mess is an undeserved compliment. This is a caricature of wine. The fruit's grotesquely ripe and candied, red fruited but with a strong confected and raisiny character, and there are strange oaky, burnt rubber, and plastic-like accents that only get worse with air. The palate is brutally tannic, extracted, and alcoholic, and the finish lasts far longer than I wish it would. My initial assessment of this was "DNPIM." I'm not yet sure why I revisited it, but DNPIM seemed like the right call.

Mourvedre (TTTG blind tasting): Medium ruby color. On open, nose of ripe blackberry and dark cherry, herbs, and oak spice. Palate of oaky, roasted black fruit, and Twizzlers. Not much tannin, medium acidity, and a short-medium slightly bitter finish. Even 12 hours later, this was a ridiculously overdone, atrocious, overly extracted, horribly crappy wine. Despite the curiosity factor, well over half the bottle was left after the tasting. Without mincing words, it sucked.

For those for whom decoding the Sierra Carche saga is meaningful, this is bottle 18230 with back label code L-8114. I suspect that these codes only reveal different degrees of suck. Sadly, I suspect that this is a "good" bottle.

For science, I had a few sips two days later, alongside the bigger, richer, 2007 L'Aventure. The Carche was atrocious, undrinkable, and without a redeeming feature. No "standard" flaws, but if there were a "worst Spanish wine under $5" prize, this should win easily, were it not for the for the Jay Miller tax.

Better than last year. Stored properly. Decanted 1 hour and it opened up over the next 2. Plum, pepper and vanilla. Fruit came forward after hour 2. Full body, nice mouth feel. Medium tannins, finish was lingering. Holding together nicely.

Rich, jammy, and mouth-filling: a big wine and a crowd pleaser. Two bottles, both consistent. Took a while for this wine to begin to realize its potential, but here it is!

Popped and poured. Decent nose of black fruit and anise. On the palate, black fruits, melted licorice, menthol, hints of red cherry. Short finish ableit balanced. Last bottle and glad of it, this never did get to anything but serviceable.

Youthful color with a bit of fade at edges. On nose, violet, fennel, fig, rosemary, coffee and chocolate within a framework of mixed dark and red berry compote. Palate is quite liquor-like with stewed fruit, raspberries and prunes, brandy (flavor rather than alcoholic heat, although a bit of that too), and then the dark flavors, liqourish root, coffee and dark chocolate with a resurgence of the stewed raspberry on the finish along with back and forth feelings of bitter coffee and cough syrup. This started out quite tannic which worked well with the stewed fruit aspect but tannins mellowed out within an hour and finish became a bit medicinal, otherwise would have rated higher. Would say drink sooner rather later. Interesting wine, I liked it best when first opened.

*Just had after a bite of charcoal grilled Korean Kal-bi BBQ, changed wine noticeably. Nose now heavy on the fennel aspect; tannins now back in play-balancing the wines richness nicely; finish less medicinal, although still noticeable. Fun

Color: Garnet with ruby edges
Nose: Very tight and even after an hour open leather, meat and jammy cassis notes are very light
Flavor: Robust blackberry and cassis, jammy with pepper notes - very good
Mouthfeel: full, thick, dense and chewy

Solid blend from the Jumilla DO, especially at the price point. this blend is Monastrell 40%, Syrah 30%, Tempranillo 30% and you do get the pepperiness of the Syrah and the meaty, jamminess of the Monastrell.

Initially, this showed more fruity Mouvedre blueberry, plum characteristics. With time, the Petite Verdot begins to show with vanilla notes nose to finish. Decanted and drank over three hour period. Unusual and interesting wine.
