Nicely evolving 2009 Bodegas y Viñedos del Contino Rioja Contino Reserva ($42 in 2017). Sharp mid-garnet, rim variation, viscous (14.0 alc.); red fruit, earth, mushroom, cedar nose; low-mid acids; softening mid-tannins; good structure; balanced semi-long red fruit and wood finish. w/grilled steak. 17/92.

Pick this one up in honor of the Jon Rgam Masters Champion Dinner. Really like the aromatics and palate of this 2018 but felt it might just a hair past its peak drinking window. Floral notes with tropical fruit all carried over to the palate. Felt medium bodied but thin on the finish.

PnP…needs more time IMO. Lots of bing cherry that needs to settle down. Definitely decent & let sit for an hour before consuming.

Robe rubis foncée. Nez de prune, sucre brun, alcool et acidité volatile. Bouche longue avec du thym, des herbes, des fruits, du bois. C'est passablement long et bon.

Medium ruby. Pronounced aromas of blackberries, strawberries, red and black plum, herbs, spice, vanilla and hint of smoked wood. High acidity, medium(+) tannins, medium alcohol, full bodied. Pronounced intensity with taste of ripe strawberries, blackberries, plum, herbs, spice and vanilla. Long.

Opened 90 minutes before and did not decant. Well developed tannins, tobacco and dark chocolate notes. Concerns it was too far beyond drinking window were misplaced. Excellent even still.

Rubí de capa media/alta con ribete teja. Nariz expresiva, de corte clásico, con un atractivo bouquet, cueros finos, flores ajadas, frutilla licorosa, algo de humo, especiados, maderas finas. En boca tiene buen Ataque, pasa bastante fluido pero con materia, notable frescura, tanino pulido, textura algo terrosa, estructura ligera, largo y con profundidad. Se aconseja decantar (que no airear). Magnífico.

Red cherry and raspberry on the nose together with clove, smoke and leather. Wafts of vanilla. Full bodied with a burst of spiced berry fruit and dried herbs on the palate. Fine tannins and sufficient acidity for lift. Good persistence on the finish. In a good spot for drinking now. Very well put together. Enjoyable 100% Garnacha from Rioja.

The same high quality and typicality as the last year tasted bottle. Definitely potential for ageing...but it was the last one. I must find a case of Rioja for the cellar - there is moments when you want a classic and old school Rioja.

This wine is incorrectly named here on CT - it's not "Variedad Mazuelo" (which is an obviously ridiculous name) but Don Vicente. In any case, rather disappointing considering the pedigree. Gently enticing nose of sweet spices and blackcurrants. Lacking in body and somewhat unbalanced. Too acidic and no sweetness or weight to counter it. Rather odd. And especially at the price! Hmm... Opens up a bit and then shows charm, but it's far from a great wine. Won't rate.

Dodgy cork required some ingenuity to remove. And then the nose. Oh, the nose. Room filling floral, tarry, camphorous. A touch of cream and plenty of spice. The mouth is full, rounded, unmistakable. The finest tannins caress the black fruit and fresh acidity. Tart, cranberry, strawberry and then full black cherry. A bite of acid and alcohol prickle. I haven’t mentioned the cocoa, coconut and vanilla because they are allusive, expected but not really there. This is the real deal and still some way off the finished article. Give it another 5 years and save up for a Durand or be prepared for a crumbly cork. I wish I had more.
