Beautiful pale golden colour, soft white head; aromatic nose, creamy, the coriander and orange peel coming through nicely; beautifully balanced palate, fresh, with subtle bitters, good body (7.7% ABV); yeasty and dry finish, good length. At Tartine Bakery, San Francisco, California, USA.

Darn good. Nursed it over the day and was quite pleased with it...one of the best Belgian not from Belgium beers I've had. Not an elite beer but excellent. Posting a second note in NV as haven't decided if it wouldn't be better just to have NV when it comes to beer. Vintage certainly helps w/ drinking window, but kinda like the idea of all the tasting notes together...

Pretty solid offering for something that could have been crap and just relying on its branding. Pretty straight forward stout. Medium bodied. Medium finish.

2.5 years of bottle age on this. Drank alongside a new one. Not a huge difference other than mellowed carbonation and a little more toned down. I think a little too sweet and belgian bubble gum for my palate. Didn't notice a huge change on this vs some other aged Belgians I've had. More caramel and sweet vs newer. Not all that impressed by the change. Either too young or not worth aging.

Drank this along side a new Three Philosophers (this had about 2.5 years of bottle age on it). Most prominent difference was the reduced carbonation, smoothness that had developed and overall mellowing of flavors. The aged beer was all banana/orange marmalade that had developed with smooth secondary fruit and floral flavors vs the younger which was much more coriander and orange peel. In my opinion, this beer could lay down many many more years with no problem. Interesting comparison.

So I added this here to my cellar list because we are aging some Belgian beers. This one has aged for a little over 18 months in appropriate cool (wine cellar) conditions. We drank this along-side a brand new un-aged Art of Darkness for a great comparison. Amazing complexity in the aged.

New: Really dark. Asphalt and street graphite and chalk. dirty gritty and beautifully rich, dark and effervescent. Tar and great amount of head. Mellows a touch to a really heavily baked apricot and some really dry compost fruit. Black pepper.

Aged: So much of the tar and chocolate has come off this. Outstanding complexity in a more Belgian style. Marshmallow over the fire, vanilla spice and lots of bubble gum yeast. spiced cardamom. Rosemary bark. Smooth apricot jam as it warms up

Darker amber. Softly hoppy, with a slightly sweet malt to the medium body. Finishes cleanly, evenly. Above-average complexity on the nose, with a satisfying array of flavors and an engaging mouthfeel. 8,5% abv, would most certainly buy again

Medium Body beer with a foggy golden amber color. Nuts and candied yams on the nose. Taste started a little peppery with hints of kiwi and banana.

Golden straw, slight haze. 2 finger head.
Powerful nose of fresh baked bread, lemon zest, clove, white peppercorn and malt. Creamy texture lifted by a spark of carbonation. Elegant medium + weight on the mouthfeel that finishes with a dry bread laced finish. Excellent Saison.

From 750ml. Cloudy, dark copper in color. Strong spice notes and caramel show on the nose. In the mouth, sweet, dark malts and moderate hops frame the cinnamon, coriander, ginger, and hints of woodsy, dried cherries. The spice attack subsides, leaving caramel and gingerbread flavors on the close. This is a giant beer. At 10% ABV, one goes a long way.

Nose shows dry Belgian spices, dates, and brown sugar. Very nicely balanced on the palate - a bit dry; malty; restrained dried fruits; very slight hint of sourness. 6.5% alc. is not noticeable. Would age nicely over the short to mid term. Excellent beer.

NV Brewery Ommegang "Zuur" Flemish Sour Brown Ale

Oudenaarde Malt more

NOSE: cementy sourness -- the cement note reminds me of the aged Anchor Christmas Ale that Bob S. brought to the BFest at Loring, and the nose otherwise reminds me of the aged "Cochonne" that I brought to the same BFest; flecks of oak; somewhere between not complex and moderately complex; not very expressive.

BODY: foamy head that dissipates rather quickly, but re-emerges with swirling; slightly hazy auburn color; medium bodied.

TASTE: sour; surprisingly light; has kind of a lager-like finish; cherries lend just a hint of sweetness to this otherwise dry brew; hint of oak; short light finish; 6% alc.; this comes across as a weak/elegant/less sour version of Duchesse. Although this is an Ommegang beer, it was actually brewed in Belgium by Brouwerji Liefmans. According to the label, "Zuur" means "sour." This would be an excellent introduction to the style, as it's pretty tame for a Flemish sour.
Zuur is a blend of Leifmans Oud Bruin, and Liefmans Cuvee Brut. Brut is the newest brew out of Leifmans. It’s Oud Bruin with cherries added and aged for 1 year. Then its blended with younger Oud Bruin and blended again with Goudenband, a Belgian brown ale.
