One of the wines I liked tonight. CBCC wine tasting of Piedmont wines. This one was a good one.

Too much oak for my taste, but a nice and mature bottle.

Bricking light garnet.
Quite intense nose with really tar and roses first, iron, tobacco some dried prunes.
Fully developed and mature, soft tannins bit drying at the end.mellowed acidity, savoury, aromas of dried berries and tobacco. good intensity of flavours throughout. Nicely developed Barolo, not super complex but very satisfying.

Opaque color with a thin lighter edge. One of the darker, richer, fruitier, more structured, and delicious Barberas from Piedmont in Italy, that rises way above the relatively low esteem of Barbera in Piedmont compared to Nebbiolo. Highly enjoyable young but has gotten even better at 8 years old.

This is currently presenting almost like an amaro, with a hot, bitter herbaceousness I'm not used to in a typical bottle of wine. Is that a rant or a rave? Not sure yet. It'll be interesting to check in on this in a few more years and see where it evolves.

Very fine, elegant and pretty. Loads of rose petal action coupled with red fruits. Silky and detailed. A fresh finish with bright acidity.

Single blind. More closed and stubborn than the wide-open Barbaresco side-by-side. Rich, dense, burly with firm and coarse sandpaper-like tannin. Seems like what you might think 2010 Barolo would taste like at this stage. Upside from here - bury this in the cellar.

Single blind. Whoa, what an attractive nose that has layers of red and black cherry, intense florals, tar and smoke. Drinking deliciously with elegance and power with a long, enticing floral finish. Young. Guessed Barbaresco, and one of the Giacosas. Impressive but perhaps surprising that it's so open aleady.

Barbaresco vs. Barolo (Chicago, IL): Served single blind. Along with the Barbaresco, surprisingly mature for the vintage (in hindsight). This felt a little lighter than the Maria di Brun. Additionally, it was a little more wound up, and showed more acid and seemingly a bit more long-term aging potential. A distinctly grainy and pronounced tannic structure made me think this was the Barolo of the flight.

I agree with the review from another vintage -- this needs a long decant. It was not really pulling its weight right out of the bottle. But, after an hour decant (and not before that time) it moved into a very nice drinking range. Still not an 'over the top' in terms of my tastes, but a quite nice wine and easily enjoyed. It is a more powerful base than I would have expected and has an unusual color palette. Smell is pleasant, but not easily described. No long aftertaste. Clearly well made and the flavor combination is appealing.

CBCC spring wine tasting (part 3)

The 2017 is much brighter than past vintages and is quite flavorful. Fruity notes with immediately racy notes that are laden with a back end of tannin. The wine is tight and requires decanting.

I’ve been sampling the same bottle by coravin over a couple months. It seems to have held up very well and opened up slightly.

Nose of white flowers on the front end, then black cherry, and finally desiccated brush with moderate heat. Translucent ruby hue. The palate is balanced with a red cherry and plum core, hints of rose and pine, moderate acidity, medium plus tannins with a ~120 grit texture. The hot vintage is evident and if you’re strongly averse to alcohol (15%) this is not for you, but overall it strikes a decent balance and is enjoyable but not for the long haul.
