2008 Cadence Ciel du Cheval Vineyard

Red Mountain Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/4/2016 - dontime wrote: NR

I love Ciel du Cheval fruit. This Cadence was everything I hoped for - lots of cherry and red fruit, licorice and floral notes. In a nice place now, with no need to be concerned about a downhill course near-term. Luscious in the mouth, with a lingering finish. If scoring 91-93.

4 varietal blend, led by Cab Franc. ButPetit Verdot really influences it. Juicy, jammy with a great Clove finish. Subtle tannins, kinda sneak up on you! Longer it opens, more the finish softens and invites u back for more. Was highly recommended to me, and them folks were right!

Nice wine. Good QPR.
Very true to the house style. Smooth, nice tannin management, nice complexity. Opened up over the course of dinner so has promise for short term aging.
Would buy again.

Was expecting more from this wine. Does not measure up to other Wash. or Cali Cabs in that price range.

GuildSomm Holiday Party - Wines of Washington (and some blinds) (Dirty Water SF): 50% New French Oak (other 50% is 2nd and 3rd fill)
Merlot Picked between 24.7 and 24.9 Brix.
Cab Franc picked between 24.7 and 25.8 Brix.

Super ripe, slightly earthy, a bit of an off-aroma (plasticky? cardboard?). Possibly corked?

Blackberries and currants on the nose and palate with a touch of dust and a nice cedary/woodsy/spice note. A little more ripe and full than usual for the Coda, but still very well balanced. Good acid. Tannins present but soft and in the background. Really nice stuff. A few years in the cellar really helps these wines come together and show their class. One of the best values in WA state BDX blends.

Drank over two nights. Probably and extra point here for the QPR.
Very well made wine, nice tannins and will last a while.
Good acidity, red fruit, some chocolate. Smooth and medium body.
Better on second night.

The wine has high acidity. Did not get much fruit... seemed thin and did not have the bold flavors that I like in Washington wines

A bit too austere right now. Even at 9 years, this bottle needs some time to be at its best. Alas, my last.

Popped and decanted. Probably a tablespoon of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Still dark purple/red color with no signs of age. Both nose and palate had a huge black cherry component. Nose also had hints of graphite and nutmeg. Perfectly balanced from a tannin, acid and alcohol standpoint. No need to drink up right now as it seems to have plenty of life ahead, but very enjoyable if you do. Would purchase again.

Decanted 4 hours. Nose of blackberries and red apple. Tight and stiff tasting. There is a suggestion of blackberries. While this is still very young, I'm not sure it holds much promise.

Delicious. Plenty of fruit but surprisingly elegant. Mostly cherry fruit with a very nice cedary undertone. I agree with Dale M that this is one of the best Codas ever,

Surprisingly more alive than anticipated. With a little air time, started expressing nuanced notes of dried fruit, herbs, earth, bitter chocolate. Also surprised by the level of acid & textural quality. This went well with pizza, not so well with the chocolate afterward. Had some heat on the nose that kept it slightly unbalanced, and is definitely on the downside, but is still enjoyable.

Translucent dark garnet. Nose of dust, plum, mint, green pepper, and tobacco. Ripe palate of blackberry, plum, stewed cherries, spice, vanilla, and espresso. Very good length. Lively acidity. Supple tannins, especially for Red Mountain fruit. Integrated oak. A tiny hint of green pepper. 62% Cab Franc, 31% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot.

Eric Guidos note and score is spot on. I would only add at just how good the cab franc is, taming the more riper tasting bordeaux grapes into simulating a left bank red, and a high end one at that. Only give away would be the weight and ever so slightly higher alcohol, but then again, this is top shelf Red Mt fruit, I wouldn't change a thing. Should be a beauty in a decade plus but no harm in enjoying this today.

Decanted 30 min. Lovely nose of sandalwood and black cherry, this was somewhat closed on day 1. Flavors were muted and tired, acid was out of line and I figured this was on the serious downside.

Day 2: Still the sandalwood nose, but very little fruit aromas. Flavors are still somewhat muted (currant and cherry), with a bitter undercurrent to the fruit. Oak flavors seem too apparent for a wine of this age. Although this paired nicely with pork chops, on it's own it seems harsh and acidic, and is not really very enjoyable. Racking this one up to "serious downside". Drink up if you have any.

The Taptiel vineyard is showing a distinct savory quality with minerals, undergrowth, currant and hints of herbs. On the palate, it was at first angular, but with the fruit intensity and caressing silky weight to keep it fun. In fact, what left the biggest impression on me was its balance, as a mixture of bittersweet dark fruit seemed to touch upon all the senses and remained throughout the finish with an almost sappy concentration. This is some pretty intense juice, and yet again another wine that will probably benefit from a few years in the cellar.
