2016 Campesino Syrah Las Madres

Carneros more

Dark red & blue fruit, green olive and light pepper on both the nose and palate. Medium acidity/light-medium tannins. Entering a good drinking window, should last through its 10th birthday though I wouldn’t hold it long term.

Surprised to not see any tasting notes in the last 4 years for this wine - the great news is that this is holding up well, and was a nice reminder of why Campesino (Las Madres Syrah, Steel Plow Grenache, Baybos) has become our go-to house wine. Gave it an hour in the cellar to open up, and boy, did it ever - walked in to a room entirely full of floral notes! Day 1 on the palate showed blueberry, tart cherry and bell pepper, with the pepper fading and blueberry/cherry predominating on day 2. Paired wonderfully with Kalbi-stile beef short ribs. In a great spot now and definitely several more years to go.

PnP. Cherry fruit fades by the mid palate and is replaced with savory aspects and white pepper.

Anise, brined black olives, black pepper, medium acid, medium tannin, good body and length. Drinking wonderfully with some air. Bummed its my last bottle.

This was beautiful last night. Great acid, very vibrant, fruit shines through. Isa is spot on year after year. Great bottle with family over for thanksgiving.

Still very solid wine. Hint's of plum and anise on the nose. Medium body and some blueberry seeps into the palate. lasting finish.

Becoming a leaner and quite tangy rhone styled syrah, with a good amount of bing cherry and lime undertones. Wish it had more tertiary development but I don't think it will evolve much more for now. Short clipped finish also was less than I was expecting. Would drink soon as opposed to waiting if you have any remaining.

This really opened up after 20-30 minutes in the glass. A darker, richer version of strawberry (one taster said strawberry jam) with a layer of white pepper.

PnP. While tannins still appear on the finish, this was lighter with less oomph than two years ago

Light body with funky floral flavor. I ran into another floral type wine a few weeks ago and let it go a day so those floral flavors would subside, which they did. This bottle took 2 days, but still had it at a level that was in enjoyable to me.

Berserker Day Case Purchase. Excellent, some barnyard funk on the nose, blue fruited with pepper spice and nice balance of fruit and acidity, medium body with very good structure on the mid-palate, long tasty finish. As good or better than the 2014. We really liked the funk.... Agree with most of the prior notes.

This was really good. GSM at its best. A touch of barnyard funk which I loved, coupled with red and blue fruit, licorice, white pepper, and Asian spices. Good acidity. Blind I might have struggled figuring out this was new world. Wish I had more!

Happy to say that my bottle had very little of the brett referenced in another note. I got a competent GSM blend that went well with food, and that represented a good value for the $15 price from Last Bottle. That said, my wife found it too big and meaty and didn’t care for it.

Wildly complex, with barnyard and peppery funk giving way to blue fruits. There is A LOT going on here for a $15 Last Bottle wine. Texture is nice, too. This was polarizing in my house (wife was put off by the barny-ness) but I liked it and am excited to see how it shows tomorrow. 90+.

Adding a point on night two, as this has balanced out a bit more. Blind, this could easily be convinced for a well-made Rocks District wine from Washington. It drinks like a baby Cayuse in some respects.

Definitely leans heavily towards its Provençal roots, with lots of salinity and acidity. The fruit is sort of lost in the mix on day one, but is more evident on day two. Might make a nice pairing with seafood.

Watermelon and lemon balanced by a generous streak of acid. On the first real warm day of spring in Ohio, this is just glorious. This has replaced the very different (but also very very good) Eric Kent rose as my favorite US rose. Krug still holds the top spot for worldwide rose.

Seriously good juice for $15 from LB. Red fruits, blackberry skins, sage, and a long iodine/bay leaf finish. Umami out the wazoo. Reminiscent of a high-quality Gigondas. Well-balanced acidity. highly recommended. Buy up to $45
